Aberdour Win National Primary School Sixes. | |
29 November 2008 Aberdour won the National Primary School Sixes, played at Drum na Drochit on Saturday 29 November 2008. A total of 13 teams took part in a well run event with teams travelling from all over Scotland. It was perhaps fitting that the trophy was won by Aberdour, the furtherest travelled of all the competitors. Glenurquhart and Aberdour qualified for the semi final from League 1. The Glen won the League and looked particularly strong, winning five games and only drawing one, with Aberdour. Aberdour had four wins and two draws, with Glenurquhart and third placed Portree. It was a disappointing day for Portree who never recaptured the form that recently won them the North of Scotland Primary School Trophy. North Skye finished fourth with two wins, two draws and two defeats. Lochaber and Kingussie qualified for the semi final from League 2. Lochaber won the League with three wins, a draw with Rockfield and a defeat to South Skye. Kingussie finished second and did well to recover with three wins after losing their first two games to Beauly and Lochaber. It was heartbreak for South Skye who faced Kingussie in the last League match knowing that even a draw would put them in the semi final. However the Badenoch side ran out 2-0 winners to snatch the semi final slot. It took extra time to seperate Glenurquhart and Kingussie in the first semi final. Glenurquhart could not turn their possession into goals and it was Kingussie who took their chances to run out 2-1 winners. Aberdour were improving as the competition went on and they defeated Lochaber 2-0 in the second semi final. The final was an exciting affair and it was Aberdour who took the trophy South for the first time ever with a 2-1 win over Kingussie The Player of the Tournament award went to Aberdour's Dan Neilson. The administration for the competition was carried out by Skye Camanachd and Willie Cowie and Sarah Nicolson in particular. Glenurquhart shinty club provided the facilities with work carried out by Helen MacLennan and George Stewart. The matches were expertly refereed by Glenurquhart's Mike Cameron and Billy MacLeod. Highland Council School Sports Co-ordinators Sarah Nicolson and Mathew MacIver ensured that the day ran smoothly. |
