22 November 2008 North Division 1 Skye Camanachd U14s 7 Lochaber U14s 2 The Skye Camanachd U14s had a good 7-2 win over Lochaber U14s in their North Division 1 clash at Pairc nan Laoch on Saturday 22 November 2008. Skye had some early chances but it was Lochaber who took the lead when a free hit was knocked wide to Shaun Kane and he lashed the ball high into the net. Skye equalised when Lochaber keeper Calum MacDonald miss-hit a clearance and John Gillies nipped in to score from the acutest of angles. It was the only mistake that MacDonald was to make as he had some terrific saves throughout the match. Lochaber regained their lead after 15 minutes when Stewart Calson was allowed to run from the half way line and he confidently tucked the ball past Ally MacLeod in the Skye goal. Skye levelled the game again with the goal of the match. Full centre Martin Bruce flicked the ball over the head of his marker Brenan MacDonald and sent a first time pass to Jordan Murchison. Murchison played in John Gillies who in turn found Willie Cowie running in on goal and the 11 year old flicked the ball past MacDonald with some aplomb. Skye keeper Ally MacLeod saved well with his feet to keep the game level and Shaun Hedley was putting in a brilliant performance in the Skye defence, ably assisted by young Ruairidh Morrison. Skye took the lead for the first time in the match thanks to some determined play from John Gillies. He chased a ball which seemed to be going out for a goal hit, caught it on the by-line, shrugged off a challenge from a Lochaber defender and scored a great individual goal. Skye made it 4-2 before the interval when John Gillies had a shot saved by MacDonald and Chris MacLennan reacted first to net the rebound. John Gillies completed his hat-trick 8 minutes into the second half with a lovely backhand shot, high into the net. Lochaber keeper Calum MacDonald had good saves from John Gillies and Jordan Murchison but the Skye lost buckshee back Scott MacLeod through an accidental a head-knock and his helmet almost certainly saved him from more serious injury. Skye made the scoreline more emphatic with two neat Jordan Murchison strikes in the last 3 minutes of the game. This was a good response from the young Skye side to their recent single goal defeat to Beauly – a match when they undoubtedly missed the presence of John Gillies in the forward line – and it’s a result that keeps them in the title race as the league comes to a conclusion.
