The latest University shinty fixtures took place on Saturday 8 November 2008.
In the weekend’s main fixture, Strathclyde University beat Glasgow University 4-1.
Skye Camanachd’s Ally MacLennan gave Glasgow the lead within the first 10 minutes and this rattled Strathclyde. Glasgow withstood a period of Strathclyde pressure to hold onto their lead until the interval.
A reshuffle in the Strathclyde side at the interval saw Kyles Athletic's Grant Irvine move to at full forward. This paid off 10 minutes into the second half as Irvine scored 4 goals in little over 5 minutes, mainly due to some slack Glasgow defending. Indeed 3 of his goals were identical as Irvine took the ball past his marker and flicked it past the Glasgow keeper, Norman Gilles from Raasay, who otherwise performed well.
Irvine’s fourth goal was a 20 yard drive into the roof of the net. Glasgow regrouped, and tightened up in defence and the remainder of the game was fairly even till the final whistle.
This was the closest match in recent seasons between the sides as past results have gone 8-0, 5-0 and 7-2 in Strathclyde’s favour. This demonstrates the strengthening of the Glasgow team, and they will be looking forward to a rematch at the Little John Vase tournament in March 2009.
