The Shinty Round-up | |
19 October 2008 Aside from the internationals, there were a number of league matches played this weekend. In the Marine Harvest Premier League, the only game played conjured up some-what of a shock result - Newtonmore’s 1-1 draw at Balgate against already relegated Lovat. Owen Ferguson gave Lovat the lead after only 8 minutes. Glen MacKintosh added to his double in last week’s win over In the Marine Harvest North Division 2, a Victor Smith hat-trick against Lovat clinched the title for Lochaber’s vital home match with Glengarry fell victim to the weather. Kinlochshiel and Caberfeidh played out an exciting 3-3 draw at Kirkton. David Mellis gave the away side the lead after 25 minutes but veteran Colin Fraser equalised after 35 minutes. Ali MacLennan restored Cabers lead 3 minutes later but Shiel again leveled 3 minutes after the break through Gordon MacDonald. Martin MacDonald put Cabers ahead for the third time in the match 2 minutes later but Gordy MacDonald’s second of the game after 65 minutes made the final score 3-3. In the Division’s other match, Skye Camanachd completed the season with a good 3-2 home win over 3rd place Newtonmore. All three Skye goals came from their U17 forwards. Danny Morrison got Skye off to a great start when he opened the scoring after only 3 minutes. However Andy MacKintosh leveled the match after 17 minutes. Neil MacVicar restored Skye's lead after 29 minutes but Newtonmore equalised again 10 minutes later through Glen Tonkin. It was the Islanders who took the lead when Paul MacKinnon – who was superb throughout - scored what proved to be the winner, 2 minutes before the break. The early part of the second half was interrupted by a particularly heavy shower which blew down the Newtonmore goal over! Glenurquhart clinched the Marine Harvest North Division 3 title with a resounding 8-0 win at Ardnamurchan. Calum Fraser hit five and Ben Hosie, Stuart Morrison and Bradley Dickson got the others to spark the celebrations. The Marine Harvest North Division 1 and North Division 3 Trophies now both sit proudly in the Glenurquhart trophy cabinet. Nearest challengers Boleskine had to win at Lochcarron but their challenge ended at Battery Park – as did Beauly’s when they lost at the same venue a few weeks earlier – when the lost 4-3. John Martin Philips hit a double for Lochcarron and Finlay Stark and Ian Cameron got the others. Sandy Fraser, Lewis Smith and Annie Butterworth replied for Boleskine but it wasn’t enough. |
