Saturday's Scotsman ran an interesting preview of the Balliemore Cup Final, highlighting the development of youngsters, Steven Morrison and brothers Ally and Shockie MacLennan.
All 3 shinty players are products of Kyleakin Primary School which has a school roll of only 30 boys and girls. The coach who started their shinty careers in the Primary School was none other than current first team amnager Ally Morrison.
Morrison is quoted as saying, "These 3 lads are guys I started coaching way back in 1998. There were only about 30 pupils in the school at the time but they were really keen and have turned out to be fine shinty players."
These coaching sessions have also produced Sarah Corrigall who stars in the ladies shinty league and current Skye Camanachd reserve players Danny Morrison - Steven's younger brother - their cousin Scott MacLeod and Ian MacPherson.
Morrison went on to pay tribute to the current youth shinty system which sees players progress from the Isle of Skye Primary Schools Association Leagues on to the 2 Under 14 teams run by Skye Camanachd, to the Skye Camanachd Under 17 team and then the reserves and finally the first team. He said "We have a really good batch of players coming through again now and the schools system is working really well for us."
