09 November 2008
The latest University shinty fixtures took place on Saturday 8 November 2008.
In the weekend’s main fixture, Strathclyde University beat Glasgow University 4-1.
Skye Camanachd’s Ally MacLennan gave Glasgow the lead within the first 10 minutes and this rattled Strathclyde. Glasgow withstood a period of Strathclyde pressure to hold onto their lead until the interval.
A reshuffle in the Strathclyde side at the interval saw Kyles Athletic's Grant Irvine move to at full forward. This paid off 10 minutes into the second half as Irvine scored 4 goals in little over 5 minutes, mainly due to some slack Glasgow defending. Indeed 3 of his goals were identical as Irvine took the ball past his marker and flicked it past the Glasgow keeper, Norman Gilles from Raasay, who otherwise performed well.
Irvine’s fourth goal was a 20 yard drive into the roof of the net. Glasgow regrouped, and tightened up in defence and the remainder of the game was fairly even till the final whistle.
This was the closest match in recent seasons between the sides as past results have gone 8-0, 5-0 and 7-2 in Strathclyde’s favour. This demonstrates the strengthening of the Glasgow team, and they will be looking forward to a rematch at the Little John Vase tournament in March 2009.

This weekend's University Shinty main event is the Glasgow derby when Glasgow University take on Strathclyde University at Yoker - Glasgow Mid Argyll's pitch - on Saturday 8 November 2008.
Strathclyde are reigning University League champions and are unbeaten since March 2006. They have also won the coveted Little John Vase for the last 2 years. They have already sent a message of intent this season, having beaten Dundee University 16-0.
Glasgow won the South Division2 a couple of years ago, going through the season undefeated. However even although they have been unable to capture similar form of late, they will still be looking to make their mark on Saturday.
Strathclyde include Skye Camanachd players Alan Palmer, David Nicolson, Robert Urquhart and possibly even Sandy Paterson. They also have Grant Irvine (Kyles Athletic), Donald MacDonald (Caberfeidh), Calum MacLean (Kinlochshiel), Dan Hood (Glasgow Mid Argyll), James Tangy (Fort William), Gavin Park (Kilmory), Sean Cameron (Glasgow Mid Argyll), Tom Smith (Lovat) and captain Andy MacLennan (Kingussie). There are also several players from Uist.
Glasgow are represented by Skye Camanachd's Gilleasbuig MacDonald, John Moir, Kerr Gibb, Ally MacLennan and Allan MacDonald. They also have Louis Munro (Kingussie) and James Livingston (Glenorchy).

The University Shinty League gets underway this weekend and for the first time, a team from the University of the Highlands and Islands will participate in what will now be an 8 team league.
There will also be a ladies team from UHI and club member Roddie MacLennan has made a plea for players - both male and female - in this week's West Highland Free Press.
Any male or female players who are reigistered students at any of the UHI partners - Inverness College, Lochaber College, Sabhal Mor Ostaig, Lewis Castle, North Highland, Argyll College, Perth College, SAMS, SDRC, HTC - can contact Roddie on 01463 24 11 44 or e-mail roddie.maclennan@inverness.uhi.ac.uk to register their interest. Eligibility includes part-time or block release students involved in the trades.
"Potentially, UHI has the best university shinty team in Scotland." says Roddie, "How good the team becomes, understandably, depends entirely on the response from players."
The varsity league is a great way for players to maintain their fitness over the close season and playing in the league does not affect players' status with their home club.
One of the benefits from the switch to summer shinty has been the increased participation in University shinty. Whilst the club scene slips into winter hibernation, a record number of university teams are playing the sport.
The latest addition is the University for the Highlands and Islands who field a team for the first time this weekend when they travel to face Dundee University.
Team organiser Roddie MacLennan, a former player with Inverness, Glenurquhart and Beauly, is excited at being involved with the UHI team from the start. “The final decision to go ahead with the team was taken 6 weeks ago and since then we have been pretty busy putting the fundamentals in place.” MacLennan is confident adding, “We have real potential, more than perhaps other Universities in Scotland and in addition to being able to draw on full-time students participating in academic studies, we are able to tap into block release students, as well as youngsters being trained as part of a craft apprentice scheme.”
The players fitting into the UHI squad are interesting indeed. Kinlochshiel’s Scotland U21 international Keith MacRae is joined by Newtonmore’s Evan Menzies and Andrew MacKintosh, as well as Lovat first team regulars James MacPherson, Jamie Matheson and Daniel Grieve along with keeper Stuart MacDonald.
Beauly will be represented by Dougie Blaine, Conor Cormack and David MacLean as well as Conor Ross, Martin MacFadyen and Ross Forbes. It’s easy to agree with MacLennan’s assessment that this side would easily hold their own in Marine Harvest North Division 1.
MacLennan is also examining the possibility of recruiting Fort William’s Adam Robertson, who is a lecturer at Lochaber College.
The team is sponsored by MacGregor Industrial Supplies and an all back strip has been selected to avoid any accusation of favouritism to any particular shinty club.
Any players interested in joining the UHI ranks can contact Roddy 0771 475 0307.Full time and part time students, as well as staff are eligible to play.
The prize on offer is the Men's and Women's Quaich. However the players will also be competing for a place in the Scottish University sides to face British Universities Hurling and Camogie All-Stars in England in January 2009
