14 June 2012 Lovat go top of the Orion Group Premiership and Inveraray, Fort William and Glenurquhart make it through to the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals following the shinty matches played on Saturday 9 June 2012.
Artemis Macaulay Cup – Quarter Finals Fort William 6 Kinlochshiel 2 Gary Innes scored four as Fort William beat Kinlochshiel 6-2 in their 3 pm throw up at the Black Parks. Duncan Rodger and Bryan Simpson both returned from suspension for Peter McIntyre’s side. Gary Innes also returned to add an attacking threat. However Liam MacIntyre missed out as he served as a one game ban for a points accumulation whilst Alex Duncan started a two match suspension for the same reason. Arran MacPhee remained out with a broken wrist. Kinlochshiel forward Gordie MacDonald made a surprise return against Kingussie last weekend following his spell on the sidelines. ‘Shiel boss Johnstone Gill waited to see if there was any reaction to MacDonald’s knee injury before deciding not to risk him. Keith MacRae played with his broken thumb strapped up and Steven Callander returned from illness. A Gary Innes brace on 6 and 18 minutes, either side of a 10 minute Bryan Simpson goal put the Fort three up after just 18 minutes. However ‘Shiel fought back and Duncan “Ach” MacRae netted twice on 38 and 43 minutes reduce the deficit at the break to a single goal. The game’s main talking back came when Keith MacRae netted to make it 3-3. However referee Graham Irving ruled out the strike on the advice of the goal judge and this decision was hotly contested by the west coast side. Fort William went on to extend their lead as Gary Innes completed his hat-trick on 52 minutes to make it 4-2. A Gordie MacKinnon effort on 62 minutes made it 5-2 and a penalty awarded by referee Irving on 70 minutes gave Gary Innes the chance to make it 6-2 and he converted despite Graham Kennedy’s best efforts. Glenurquhart 3 Kingussie 1 Glenurquhart beat Kingussie 3-1 in their 3pm throw up at Blairbeg. The Glen suffered a shock Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup defeat to Skye Camanachd last weekend so they were keen to give their supporters something to cheer this weekend. Andrew Corrigan was free from suspension but he remained out as he is still recovering from a broken toe. Eddie Tembo left the field in Portree with what seemed like a tight hamstring but he was fit enough to start. Ruairidh Cameron and Liam Girvan also made their come-backs from injury. Kingussie welcomed Fraser Munro back after a one game ban but Lee Bain sat out the second game of his two match ban. Barrie Dallas was injured and Martin Dallas was missing. Neale Reid put the Glen ahead on 26 minutes and he added a second 3 minutes into the second half. After scoring for the Glen reserves midweek, substitute James MacPherson got his first goal for the senior Glen side on 68 minutes to make it 3-0. Ronald Ross scored his customary goal 10 minutes from time but it was too late, too late for the Kings. Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Inveraray 5 Chris Crawford scored four as Inveraray beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 5-0 in their noon throw up at Yoker. GMA followed up their Balliemore Cup win over Skye Camanachd with a battling Artemis Macaulay Cup draw with Kyles Athletic last weekend so Inveraray would not underestimate the challenge they faced and it took some late goals to finally see off the home side. Chris Crawford scored the only goal of the first half on 32 minutes. Garry MacPherson made it 2-0 on the hour mark. Chris Crawford went on to take his tally to four with goals on 67, 85 and 89 minutes. The final South tie did not go ahead this weekend as Bute have their free Saturday so their match against Oban Camanachd will be played at a later date.
Bullough Cup – First Round Lochside Rovers 5 SCOTS Camanachd 0 Lochside Rovers ran out 5-0 winners against forces side SCOTS Camanachd at Mossfield with Lewis Cameron scoring a goal in each half for the Oban side. Shaun Morgan put Lochside ahead on 18 minutes and a 35 minute Brian MacCallum strike and a Lewis Cameron effort 3 minutes before the break put them 3-0 in front. Second half goals from David MacInnes on 47 minutes and Liam Cameron’s second on 81 minutes confirmed Lochside Rovers place in the next round.
Orion Group Premiership Lovat 3 Newtonmore 0 Lovat go top of the Orion Group Premiership following their 3-0 win over reigning champions Newtonmore at Balgate. Lovat boss Allan MacRae suffered a blow in the lead up to the game when he learnt that had to do without his top scorer Greg Matheson who was on holiday. Norman MacArthur also had absentees to contend with as his ace-marksman Danny MacRae remained on the sidelines and Rory Kennedy was missing in defence so Steven MacDonald slotted into his role. Duncan Davidson, who recently returned to the Lovat camp after a spell with the Kingussie second team, scored the only goal of the first half a minute before the break. Fraser Gallacher added a second on 70 minutes to make it 2-0 after Norman Campbell misjudged the flight of a ball into defence. Fraser Gallacher got his second 5 minutes from time to make it 3-0, to the delight of the home support. Indeed the winning margin could have been greater had Lovat not had a fourth goal ruled out. The victory means that Lovat have now beaten Newtonmore for the second time in the league this season. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a side who had to beat Kilmallie to ensure their top flight survival at the end of last season and we will find out over their remaining eight fixtures just what this Lovat side can achieve. Kilmallie 10 Bute 0 Kilmallie are off the bottom of the table after hitting double figures against Bute at the Canal Parks. The game was crucial for both sides as they fight the threat of relegation. The sides had differing fortunes in the Scottish Camanachd Cup last weekend. Kilmallie secured a 3-1 derby win over Fort William whilst Bute side minus Iain MacDonald and David Zavaroni went down 4-0 to Lochaber. Martin Stewart returned from suspension for Kilmallie. Bute manager Barry Martin made the trip North without several regulars including the influential Hector Whitelaw and Scottish international Iain MacDonald as he struggles to shake off a hamstring problem. They also had to contend with a Kilmallie forward line in full flow with all four forwards eventually scoring at least two goals. Michael Rodger was their top scorer with four goals whilst John Stewart, Grant MacKenzie and Liam MacDonald got two each. Michael Rodger gave Kilmallie an early two goal lead with strikes on 10 and 17 minutes. John Stewart made it 3-0 just 60 seconds later and Grant Mackenzie got their fourth on 27 minutes. John Stewart got his second on 32 minutes and Michael Rodger completed his hat-trick a minute before the break to give Kilmallie a 6-0 advantage of the break. Liam MacDonald made it 7-0 just 4 minutes into the second half and Michael Rodger got his fourth a couple of minutes later. Grant MacKenzie got his second on 77 minutes and Liam MacDonald’s second 9 minutes from time made it a perfect ten.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Lochcarron 2 Beauly 1 The meeting at Battery Park between Lochcarron and Beauly was brought forward to Thursday 7 June 2012 to allow players from both sides to attend the weekend Rockness Music Festival. Gregor Cushnie put the home side ahead on 14 minutes and he added a second 15 minutes from time. However a goal from Jamie MacLennan on 84 minutes got Beauly back into it but it was Lochcarron who edged this close encounter. Keeper Kenny Ross and full back Ben Dalgety were top performers for the home side.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Aberdour 1 Oban Camanachd 11 It was top versus bottom as Oban Camanachd travelled to Fife to play Aberdour. The visitors proved too strong, running out 11-1 winners with Andrew MacCuish getting five first half goals. New Oban Camanachd boss Peter MacCuish made a winning start with a 3-0 triumph over Glenorchy last weekend. The club also announced that they had suspended Matt Rippon for the rest of the season following his dismissal against Lochaber and his conduct after the final whistle. Craig MacMillan, Alan MacGregor and James MacMillan were all free of suspension for this 3pm throw up.U17 player Malcolm Clark put the visitors ahead on 10 minutes whilst Iain MacMillan made it 2-0 just 4 minutes later. Andrew MacCuish opened his account when he made it 3-0 on 17 minutes and he got his second on 27 minutes. Iain MacMillan got his second to make it 5-0 shortly after. Referee David Mitchell awarded Aberdour a penalty on the half hour mark and Kevin McKell converted from the spot to make it 5-1. However there was to be no respite for Aberdour as Andrew MacCuish became the day’s top scorer with strikes on 40, 44 and 45 minutes to make it 8-1 at the interval. Craig MacDougall’s scoring exploits for Lochside Rovers earned him a place in the senior side and he netted the ninth on 51 minutes. Lorne Dickie on 68 minutes and David Lafferty on 78 minutes completed a 11-1 victory for the league leaders. Glenorchy 5 Kilmory 0 Third place Glenorchy knew they could afford no slip-ups against fourth place Kilmory if they were to maintain their title challenge. The home side lost to league leaders Oban Camanachd last weekend and now trail them by two points with a game more played. However they got back on the rails with a 5-0 with Grant MacPherson, Kieran MacKay, John MacNulty from the penalty spot, Scott Livingston and Lorne Brown got the goals. Alex Cunningham countered for Kilmory. Taynuilt 2 Strachur 2. Sixth place Taynuilt went 2-0 down against Strachur with early strikes from Ally Mirlees on 9 minutes and Duncan MacNicol on 14 minutes. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Glenurquhart 1 Newtonmore 2 Glenurquhart and Newtonmore brought their Blairbeg meeting forward to Wednesday 6 June 2012 to allow players from both sides to attend the weekend Rockness Music Festival. The Glen ran out 2-1 winners following this entertaining mid-week tussle. The home side started well and they took the lead on 24 minutes when James MacPherson, who always looked likeliest to score, collected a shy and strode forward before thumping the ball into the net. ‘More responded immediately and home keeper Cameron MacLennan saved well from Evan Menzies. Calum Stewart shot over the bar for the visitors on 39 minutes when the Glen looked like ruing not making more of some dangerous balls into the goal area from James MacPherson. Evan Menzies again went close on 42 minutes when a turn and shot saw the ball fly past Cameron MacLennan’s right post. However the Glen extended their lead a minute before the break when a shy from the left was knocked down to Ben Hosie and he produced a delightful chip to beat Sean MacQuarrie to make it 2-0. If the Glen were on top in the first half, it was ‘More who dominated the second period with Cameron MacLennan the busier keeper. However all they had to show for their efforts was a 70 Drew MacDonald strike when he latched on to a rebound off Glen keeper MacLennan to make it 2-1. Glenurquhart introduced Iain MacLeod to help see out the rest of the game. ‘More continued to press until the end but the home defence, brilliantly marshaled by Donald Fraser and for whom Bradley Dickson was excellent, held out until referee John Angus Gillies blew final whistle. Kinlochshiel 6 Lochaber 4 There were goals galore at Kirkton as second top Kinlochshiel beat an under-strength Lochaber side 6-4. Colin MacDiarmid was available again for ‘Shiel after serving a three match ban and he started at buckshee back. However they were without Steven Isles who was unable to get through the travel congestion in the Fort William area caused by the world Mountain Bike Championship and the arrival of the Olympic Torch. Lochaber were not be near full strength for the game and they travelled with just twelve players including Martin Patterson at full forward. Lochaber opened brightly but it was the home side who took the lead through Conall Fraser on 16 minutes. Jordan Fraser was a constant threat for Kinlochshiel and he made it 2-0 on 24 minutes. Lochaber didn’t let their heads drop though and they pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later when Martin Patterson forced the ball over the line a couple of minutes later. However ‘Shiel raced into a 4-1 lead at the break, thanks to a goal in his first start from U17 player Alasdair Nixon on 39 minutes and a Scott MacLean effort on the stroke of half-time when he beat his marker and burst through on goal. However Lochaber showed great spirit in the second half and Martin Patterson made it 4-2 on 57 minutes. Lochaber, who were coached by first team keeper Calum MacDonald, were forced to switch full back Danny Delaney to full forward when he picked up a hand injury and Delaney made it 4-3 on 62 minutes. Then incredibly Pat Toal squared the game on 66 minutes as he made it 4-4 after home keeper Iain Cameron had made a couple of good saves. Kinlochshiel may have eased up at the start of the second half but they rallied for the remainder of the game and they got their reward when substitute Steven Fraser turned and fired home on 78 minutes and Conall Fraser got his second 4 minutes from time to give his side the points and a 6-4 win. Kingussie 5 Glengarry 0 Kingussie beat Glengarry 5-0 at the Dell with John Gibson scoring twice. Glengarry’s Michael Brady served the final game of a four match ban whilst play-maker Steven Cameron was still injured.
