The home side initially took charge as goals from Craig Blair on 10 minutes, David Martin just 5 minutes later and Roddy McColl on 25 minutes put them 3-0 ahead at the break. Aberdeen University 0 Newtonmore 7 Calum Stewart grabbed a hat-trick as Newtonmore returned from Aberdeen following a comprehensive 7-0 win over the Students. Aberdeen University hosted the 2011 final and they have made a decent start to life in Marine Harvest North Division 2 following their promotion at the end of last season. The Sutherland Cup is the only trophy that Newtonmore did not win last season and the men from the Eilan are determined to put that right this year. Newtonmore travelled without David Campbell who served the second match of a two game ban. Evan Menzies is proving to be the most dangerous forward in North reserve shinty at the moment and he put ‘More 2-0 in front at the break with goals on 8 and 44 minutes. A feature of this Newtonmore side in recent weeks has been their second half performances and this tie was no exception as they added five further goals. Glengarry 1 Kinlochshiel 2 It took extra time to separate Glengarry and Kinlochshiel at Craigard. Michael Brady served the last match of a three game ban for the home side but Daniel MacLennan was available again for selection following his two match suspension. The onslaught on the Inverness goal continued and Jamie Matheson got his second a minute into the second half and he completed his hat-trick on 58 minutes. Bradley MacHardie made it 9-0 on 68 minutes whilst Rory Campbell completed his hat-trick on 73 minutes to take Lovat to double figures. James MacPherson on 82 minutes and Lewis Tawse with his second 4 minutes from time completed the misery for the Capital side. Col Glen 1 Boleskine 3 Col Glen had home advantage against Boleskine. Neither side got past the first round last year so this tie gave one of them the chance to at least go a stage further this time around. Raymond Robertson got the visitors off to a great start with a goal after just 2 minutes. Lewis Smith made it 2-0 on 38 minutes but a Colin Willment goal on the hour mark got the home side back in the tie. However Lewis Smith got his second 20 minutes from time as Boleskine ran out 3-1 winners. Strathglass 5 Inveraray 2 First team player / manager Robert Geddes scored twice as Strathglass beat Inveraray 5-2 in their 3pm throw up at Cannich. Rhuaridh MacKay, a Robert Geddes double, Calum MacIntyre and Kieron Mellons counted for the home side with Lewis MacNicol scoring twice for the visitors. This gave Robert Geddes three goals for the day as he scored for the Strath first team in their noon throw up against Lochcarron. Both sides went out in the second round last season so Strathglass now have the chance to go one better in this year’s competition. Aberdour W/O v Lochaber Aberdour progress to round two as Lochaber were unable to raise a team for the trip to Fife. Beauly W/O v Tayforth Tayforth were unable to raise a team to play Beauly at Braeview Park so Beauly go through to the next round. Kinlochshiel 4 Kyles Athletic 0 The match of the day in the top division was the first meeting in living memory between Kinlochshiel and Kyles Athletic at Kirkton with the home side running out eventual 4-0 winners. Kinlochshiel captain Gordie MacDonald remained absent with a knee injury whilst Kyles’ have been short of several players during the opening weeks of the season. Kyles were shooting up the slope in the first half and they had more than their share of pressure without being able to beat Graham Kennedy in the ‘Shiel goal. They were made to pay when, against the run of play, Keith MacRae scored the only goal of the first half on 35 minutes. However Kinlochshiel took control during the second 45 minutes as Kyles faded. Finlay MacRae twice and Duncan “Ach” MacRae added to their tally and they secured both points with a 4-0 win. The Kirkton pitch cut up badly during the second half and this will be of concern to the home side. Kinlochshiel now trail leaders Newtonmore by two points but the west coast side has a game in hand. Inveraray 0 Fort William 2 Fort William are the top division’s only unbeaten side following their 2-0 win over Inveraray at the Winterton. Both sides had taken four points from their opening three games going into this one. The Fort were minus defender Duncan Rodger. Fort William held on to this narrow advantage until a minute from time when substitute Ryan Campbell scored a second. Lovat 1 Kingussie 2 A goal in each half from Ronald Ross gave Kingussie a 2-1 win at Balgate in what was Lovat’s first league defeat of the season. Lovat boss Allan Macrae had Craig Mainland and Martin Mainland back in the side. Kings’ boss Russell Jones was unable to call on the services of the injured Iain Borthwick who came off early in the game against Kinlochshiel last week. However the Kingussie manager was boosted with the news that Ronald Ross had suffered no ill-effects from his first appearance of the season in the same game. Ronald Ross was marked by Drew Howie and the Scotland U21 cap put in a spirited performance. However Ross managed to lose his marker on two occasions and he punished Lovat severely both times by firing past home keeper Stuart MacDonald on 34 minutes and a minute into the second half. Lovat’s Martin Bell was pushed into attack later in the game and he netted for Lovat 5 minutes from time but the Kings took the points. Glenurquhart 1 Bute 0 Crucial points were at stake when second bottom Glenurquhart played draw specialists Bute at Blairbeg. The Islanders were just a point better off than their rivals before the match after drawing three of their opening four games. Neither side has been particularly potent in front of goal in the league this season and it turned out that way again as only one goal separated the sides. The man who got the all-important goal was Lewis MacLennan and his 73 minute strike gave Glenurquhart both points. Glenurquhart now leap-frog Bute in the table as the Islanders fall into the relegation zone.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Beauly 0 Lochaber 5 Lochaber go top of the table following an impressive 5-0 win over Beauly in the noon throw up at Braeview Park. Lochaber’s Scottish international Shaun Nicolson continued his good scoring run with a hat-trick and he got the opener on 28 minutes. Ryan Toal made it 2-0 on 34 minutes and Ben Delaney added a third 5 minutes before the break. Beauly rallied in the second half but Shaun Nicolson went on to complete his hat-trick with two goals in four minutes as he scored on 61 and 64 minutes. Strathglass 1 Lochcarron 3 Strathglass went down 3-1 to Lochcarron in their noon throw up at Cannich. Both sides have struggled to get a regular team selection this season and Lawrence Jones is still out for Strathglass and the teenager could miss a year’s shinty as he recovers from a knee injury. Player / manager Robert Geddes put the Strath ahead on 17 minutes but Mark Sproule made it one each on 33 minutes. However Taynuilt picked up their first point of the season last weekend following a draw with Kilmory and they earned another point when Fraser MacMillan scored 8 minutes from time. Strachur 2 Aberdour 1 Second bottom Strachur hosted on-form Aberdour. The visitors had won their last three matches so they went into this one with confidence. However work commitments ruled out at least three of the Aberdour players. Rhys Campbell scored twice as Strachur took the points with a 2-1 win. Craig Matheson scored for the visitors.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Bute 2 Ballachulish 1 Goals in the last 14 minutes from Ally Carmichael and Gordon MacMillan gave Bute a 2-1 win over Ballachulish on Rothesay.
