09 May 2012 The first round ties from the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup brought together the non-Orion Group Premiership sides on Saturday 5 May 2012.
Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – First Round Glasgow Mid Argyll 4 Oban Camanachd 2 The first tie of the opening round of the 2012 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup was the 12 noon meeting between Glasgow Mid Argyll and Oban Camanachd at Yoker and the home side produced the surprise of the round when they put their more fancied opponents out of the competition. GMA got off to a blistering start and Mark Bain, who has been prolific for the Yoker side in recent weeks, netted on 8 minutes and 17 minutes to give them an early 2-0 lead. Craig MacMillan reduced the deficit on 35 minutes and the home side took the one goal lead into the break. GMA restored their advantage a couple of minutes into the second half through Iain Luke and although Oban Camanachd struck back again with a 63 minute Andrew MacCuish goal, Scotland U17 international Craig Anderson scored 10 minutes later to clinch a place with the big boys in the second round draw. Lochaber 8 Lochcarron 0 With only two months of the new season gone, it is remarkable that Lochaber and Lochcarron met for the fourth time this term. Lochcarron are the only side to have taken a point from the Spean Bridge men in the league when the sides drew 1-1 at Battery Park on the opening day of the shinty season. Lochaber have won their two other meetings and Lochcarron were no match for their opponents this time Ross Matheson was suspended for the visitors. Zandz Ferguson got the home side off side off to a great start with a goal in the opening minute. Lochaber have been boosted by Scott Patterson’s return to the side a fortnight ago and he scored on 22 and 45 minutes to put Lochaber 3-0 up at the break. Stuart Callison made it 4-0 on 58 minutes and Lochaber went on to make the final score more emphatic with four goals in the final 20 minutes. Scott Patterson completed his hat-trick on 70 minutes and Ryan Toal got in on the act on 78 minutes. Second goals from both Stuart Callison on 86 minutes and Zandz Ferguson a minute from time completed the scoring. Had it not been for some fine saves from Lochcarron keeper Douglas MacKenzie, the winning margin could have been greater. Skye Camanachd 5 Caberfeidh 2 Skye produced a powerful second half performance to beat Caberfeidh 5-2 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Both sides have had some indifferent results of late. Oban Celtic sit bottom of Marine Harvest South Division 1 and Beauly are in second place in Marine Harvest North Division 1 so the visitors started as favourites. Oban Celtic keeper Jack Hill was suspended following his red card against Kilmory last weekend. Marc MacLauchlin put Beauly ahead on 9 minutes and Scotland U21 international David MacLean extended their lead on 32 minutes. Young Oban Celtic forward Ally McKerracher got his side back in the game with a goal 4 minutes before the break and the tie remained on a knife-edge until 5 minutes from time when Beauly’s Ryan Tillman made it 3-1 to seal his side a place in the next round. Kilmory 3 Taynuilt 2 Marine Harvest South Division 1 side Kilmory edged out Tayforth, who play in the league below, by the odd goal in five. Home side Kilmory were without suspended hit-man Hal Jones. Ally MacLennan, Duncan MacBrayne and Scott Sinclair got Kilmory’s goals whilst Michael MacQueen and Stuart Scott replied for Taynuilt. Strathglass 5 Aberdour 2 Strathglass and Aberdour renewed rivalries at Cannich. The sides were drawn to meet at Cannich in the same stage of the competition last season. However an unplayable pitch meant that the tie was switched to Fife a fortnight later when a Darren Reid hat-trick helped Strathglass to a 5-0 victory. This time a hat-trick from player / manager Robert Geddes helped Strathglass to a 5-2 win. Geddes got the opener on 25 minutes and the veteran forward added another 5 minutes later. Mark MacLeod made it 3-0 straight from the restart and when Donald Fraser added a fourth on 40 minutes, it ended the tie as a contest. Strathglass took this lead into the break but an Aberdour fight-back saw Cammy MacCue net on 65 and 75 minutes to half the Strath’s advantage. However Robert Geddes completed his hat-trick 60 seconds later to clinch a 5-2 victory. Strathdearn Cup – First Round Glengarry 3 Caberfeidh 1 Glengarry beat Caberfeidh 3-1 at Craigard to win the final place in the Strathdearn Cup second round. The home side started the day in second place in Marine Harvest North Division 2 and they were favourites against their lower league opponents. Gordon MacDonald was a hat-trick hero for ‘Garry with three goals in the opening 15 minutes. MacDonald’s goals on 7, 9 and 15 minutes gave Caberfeidh an up-hill struggle. Colin MacLennan pulled a goal back 5 minutes before the break but ‘Garry saw out the reminder of the game.
Orion Group Premiership Newtonmore 3 Fort William 0 The match of the day in the Orion Group Premiership was the meeting between leaders Newtonmore and Fort William at the Eilan. Newtonmore were without Glen MacKintosh who serves a two match ban for his red card against Fort William a fortnight ago. Boss Norman MacArthur gave a start to Jamie Robinson as he continues his return from injury. Gary Innes missed out for the visitors as he was in Shetland playing with his band Manran. Alex Duncan started a two match ban for Peter McIntyre’s side. Danny MacRae put ‘More ahead on 28 minutes with the only goal of the first half. Danny MacRae got his and Newtonmore’s second on 55 minutes and youngster Chris Sellar, who continues to impress since his step up to the first team, sxored with a 69 minute strike which was enough to give ‘More a 3-0. The home side were in control throughout the game and the win which extends their lead at the top of the table to two points as rivals Kinlochshiel and Lovat faltered. Kilmallie 2 Kinlochshiel 1 Kilmallie secured their first win of the season when they beat second place Kinlochshiel 2-1 at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie’s Michael Rodger served the second game of a two match ban but Peter Carmichael was available again after serving his one match ban. Kinlochshiel had John Don MacKenzie available again following a two game suspension and captain Gordie MacDonald made a scoring return from injury in the win over Bute last week. Kilmallie captain John Stewart fired his side into the lead on 15 minutes and they took this advantage into the break. Kinlochshiel’s Finlay MacRae has recently been troubled with a hamstring problem but he was fit enough to square the game on 55 minutes. However Kilmallie were not to be denied and John Stewart scored his second on 67 minutes to give his side a morale-boosting win. Kyles Athletic 2 Lovat 2 Fourth place Kyles Athletic and third place Lovat shared the points following a 2-2 draw at Strachur. Andrew King was available again for Kyles after a two match. Lorne MacKay served the second game of a two match suspension for Lovat and James Grieve was on holiday. Callum Cruden was available ahead of a one game ban next week. The visitors included teenager Graeme MacMillan in their squad. All the goals came in the second half as Lewis Tawse put the Lovat ahead on 61 minutes before Ewen Campbell continued his good scoring run with a 70 minute strike. Robbie MacLeod put Kyles back in front after referee Colin MacDonald awarded them a penalty. However Greg Matheson earned Lovat a point with a goal 10 minutes from time which means the Balgate men leap-frog Kinlochshiel into second place. Inveraray 1 Bute 0 There was a local derby at the Winterton where Inveraray welcomed Bute for their 3pm throw up. Bute were boosted by the return from suspension of both keeper Kevin Queen, James Craig and David Whitelaw. The decisive goal came 16 minutes from time when referee Billy Wotherspoon awarded the home side a penalty. Garry MacPherson converted to seal the points. Bute are now only above bottom side Kilmallie on goal difference. Glenurquhart 3 Kingussie 3 There was an explosive meeting between Glenurquhart and Kingussie at Blairbeg. David Girvan and Paul MacKintosh remain longer term absentees for the Glen. Kingussie had Louis Munro available again after he served a one match ban and Paul Gow and Greg Dawson were also back in the squad. Ronald Ross also played and he put Kingussie ahead on 10 minutes. Fraser Heath made a substitute appearance for Glenurquhart last week after he suffered a hand injury earlier in the season and he fired in a double on 13 and 26 minutes gave the Glen the advantage which they took into the half time interval. Martin Dallas made it 2-2 just 10 minutes into the second half and it remained that way until Ronald Ross got his second goal of the game on 83 minutes. That strike looked to have given Kingussie the win but Glen substitute Billy Urquhart struck a minute from time to earn Glenurquhart a share of the points. The home side had Lewis MacLennan sent off by referee Graham Irving in the closing minutes following an incident with Kings’ Iain Borthwick.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Strachur 0 Glenorchy 2 Second bottom Strachur welcomed third place Glenorchy to their excellent new facilities. Glenorchy won 2-0 when the sides met in March and they repeated the feat in this 1pm throw up. Lorne Brown and John Surtain got their goals. (more to follow) |
