26 June 2012 The AGJ Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final fell foul of the heavy rain and Newtonmore returned to the top of the Orion Group Premiership following the shinty action on Saturday 23 June 2012.
AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final Inveraray P Taynuilt P The AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final between Inveraray and Taynuilt at the Strachurmore Sports Centre was postponed because of an unplayable pitch. Referee Robert Baxter carried out an 8am pitch inspection and the heavy rain had left surface water which covered the referee’s boots in places as he paced the field. The final will now take place at the same venue on Saturday 30 June 2012.
Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Second Round Kingussie 3 Kinlochshiel 5 (after extra-time) The match of the day was at the Dell where Kinlochshiel progressed to the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter-finals with a thrilling 5-3 extra-time win over Kingussie in their 3pm meeting at the Dell. Lee Bain was available again for the Kings following his two match ban and his return was a boost for manager Russell Jones’ defensive options. Russell Dallas also returned after picking up a hand injury in the derby draw with Newtonmore. Captain Gordie MacDonald returned for ‘Shiel and he was given a starting place in attack. However manager Johnston Gill will have to do without the services of wing centre Steven Callander for the rest of the season as he has stopped playing because of work commitments. Gill resisted the temptation to bring Finlay MacRae back into defence to mark Ronald Ross as he did in the original tie which finished 1-1 at Kirkton. That job was given instead to Mark MacDonald. The sides had met three times in total this season. Prior to the Kirkton draw, they each won on their opponent’s ground. The tie was played in heavy rain and Kingussie enjoyed most of the first half pressure in this fourth encounter. Indeed visiting keeper Graham Kennedy made a series of fine stops to keep the home side at bay. However Ronald Ross struck the only goal of the first half on 36 minutes and the home side took this lead into the break. Kingussie suffered a blow 5 minutes into the second half when Louis Munro had to come off with what was later confirmed to be a broken foot. He had been playing well in the Kings’ engine room and he could be out of action for around six weeks. Johnston Gill had brought Finlay MacRae back to the centre line from the start of the second half to try and steam the tide and he got his reward when ‘Shiel captain Gordie MacDonald, who played with a heavily strapped knee, made it 1-1 on 65 minutes. There was no further scoring during the regulation 90 minutes but there was an explosion of goals during the additional half an hour. Ronald Ross got his second a minute into extra-time but Duncan “Ach” MacRae drew ‘Shiel level for the second time when he beat Andrew Borthwick a minute before the extra-time interval. Keith MacRae put ‘Shiel in front for the first time in the tie a couple of minutes into the second period of extra-time. John MacRae put the visitors 4-2 up on 112 minutes and when Keith MacRae added his second just 3 minutes later, ‘Shiel looked to have one foot in the next round. Rory Borthwick pulled a goal back for Kingussie a minute later but the Kirkton side went through to the next round. It also took a couple of excellent saves from ‘Shiel man of the match, keeper Graham Kennedy, to keep his side in front during the extra-time period. Kinlochshiel now travel to Balgate to play Lovat in the quarter-finals on Saturday 14 July 2012. Kyles Athletic P Glasgow Mid Argyll P The tie between Kyles Athletic and Glasgow Mid Argyll was postponed as both Tighnabruaich and Yoker were ruled unplayable. This game is now likely to take place on Saturday 7 April 2012 as Glasgow Mid Argyll have a Balliemore Cup semi-final this weekend.
Sutherland Cup – Quarter Finals Kingussie 2 Kilmallie 0 Kingussie and Kilmallie clashed at the Dell in the final Sutherland Cup quarter final tie. Kingussie are a league above their rivals and they started as favourites in this noon meeting. In the end it was two veterans who saw them through. Rory Fraser got the opener on 35 minutes whilst Michael Clark added a second 12 minutes from time.
Strathdearn Cup – Quarter Finals Glenurquhart 3 Kinlochshiel 1 Kinlochshiel made the short journey down the road for their 2pm throw up against Glenurquhart at Blairbeg in what probably the pick of the quarter-final ties between two well matched sides who have been on good recent runs. Two goals in the final 5 minutes of the first half put Glenurquhart 2-0 up. Ben Hosie got the opener on 40 minutes and his younger brother Jack Hosie, made it 2-0 on the stroke of half time. Jordan Fraser pulled a goal back for ‘Shiel on 58 minutes to make it 2-1 and that is the way it remained until Euan Lloyd netted in the final minute to seal Glenurquhart’s place in the last four. Fort William 7 Boleskine 2 Marine Harvest North Division 2 side Fort William were too strong for Boleskine from Marine Harvest North Division 3 as they ran out 7-2 winners in their quarter final tie at the Black Parks. The Fort have been on a good run of late and defender Cameron Grant was passed fit for this noon throw up after suffering a broken nose. He also featured for the Fort William U17 side as a forward during the week when he scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win over Kilmallie U17. Michael Slezas, Lewis Morrison, a penalty from keeper Cal Brown, a Graham Campbell brace, Peter Wood and Scott Knox all counted for Fort William. Boleskine benefited from an own goal and an Iain Grant strike. Fort William will now meet Glenurquhart in the semi-finals. Skye Camanachd 1 Lovat 1 (after extra-time - Skye won 2-0 on pens) It eventually took penalties to separate Skye Camanachd and Lovat at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree after the sides had finished at one each. Orion Group Premiership Fort William 1 Newtonmore 2 Newtonmore returned to league duty and they headed for the Black Parks to play Fort William in a 3pm throw up. Neil Robertson was missing for the Fort as he served a one match ban for a points accumulation and Mark Grant was also banned for his red card last week. Fort boss Peter McIntyre also had to do without the unavailable Gary Innes, who hurt his ankle when on Skye during the week, and Duncan Rodger as well as the injured Arran MacPhee. Newtonmore manager Norman MacArthur decided that Danny MacRae should again start on the bench following his substitute appearance in last weekend’s Co-operative MacTavish Cup win over Lochaber. Newtonmore played into the strong wind in the first half and Daniel Stewart got the home side off to a great start when he put them ahead in the opening minute. However Glen MacKintosh, who played with stitches in the head knock sustained in last week’s game, struck on 25 minutes to make it 1-1. Glen MacKintosh then showed what a key man he has become for the champions when he put Newtonmore into the lead on the stroke of half-time. Newtonmore had the bulk of the second half pressure but they were unable to find a way past home keeper Paul MacKay and increase their tally. The win takes Newtonmore back to the top of the Orion Group Premiership. They lead Kyles on goal difference, a point ahead of third place Lovat, with all three sides having just seven games remaining. Kilmallie 2 Glenurquhart 2 There was a real four-pointer at the Canal Parks where Kilmallie welcomed Glenurquhart for their 2pm throw up. Kilmallie’s win over Lovat last weekend meant they leap-frogged Glenurquhart out of the relegation zone on goal difference. However the Glen have three games in hand on their opponents. Lewis MacLennan returned form injury for the Glen and there was a starting place for James MacPherson who had scored in his last three outings. David Smart fired the Glen into a 6 minute lead and they looked to be taking this advantage into the interval until Kilmallie captain John Stewart netted a minute before the break. Liam MacDonald put Kilmallie in front 10 minutes into the second half and looked to have his side both points until the Glen introduced Stuart Reid in defence and John Barr, who was pushed forward into attack, shot home in the final minute to make it 2-2 and ensure a share of the points.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Inverness 1 Lochaber 7 Lochaber beat an under-strength Inverness side 7-1 in their 2pm throw up at the Bught Park. The home side were led by new manager Calum McLeod for the first time following his return to the hot-seat and his inaugural game in charge could hardly have been any tougher. Not only did they face the Co-operative MacTavish Cup runners-up but they did so without no fewer than eight of their first squad. The absentees include striker Somhairle MacDonald and keeper Adam MacMaster who is working abroad. Davie Glass was suspended but he also had a leg injury which would have kept him out in any case. Lochaber returned to league action for the first time since the end of April 2012. Indeed the Spean Bridge men had only played five league games this season – fewer than any other club in the country. Boss Michael Delaney gave Scott Patterson a starting spot after his cup final substitute appearance last weekend. The home side took an 11 minute lead through James Cameron but they were over-powered by the Spean Bridge outfit who replied a couple of minutes later through Shaun Nicolson. Scott Patterson put Lochaber in front on 14 minutes and Shaun Nicolson went on to complete a first half hat-trick with goals on 18 and 31 minutes. Scott Patterson got his second from the penalty spot on 42 minutes to give the visitors a 5-1 lead at the break. Zandz Ferguson made it 6-1 on 57 minutes and to Inverness’ credit, they held out until Shaun Nicolson got his fourth goal 10 minutes from time to make it 7-1. Strathglass 0 Caberfeidh 4 Kevin Bartlett scored all four goals as league leaders Caberfeidh beat bottom side Strathglass 4-0 at Cannich. Cabers passed up the chance to extend their lead at the top when they lost out to Lochcarron in their last outing. They knew that another such slip up would be a blow to their title chances. Caberfeidh’s Liam Mutch picked up a booking late in the game against Lochcarron which meant he was available this week but misses his side’s next outing because of a points accumulation. Kevin Bartlett got the only goal of the first half on 23 minutes. The Scotland international capped a fine performance with goals on 65, 70 and 74 minutes to keep the Castle Leod men at the top of the table. Skye Camanachd 2 Lochcarron 0 Skye Camanachd were back in action following two weekends without a game and they beat Lochcarron 2-0 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Marine Harvest North Division 2 Aberdeen University 2 Glengarry 3 Glengarry ended their run of four defeats when they beat Aberdeen University 4-3 in their 2pm throw up in the Granite City. The Students had a two point advantage over their rivals ahead of this meeting but they had played a game more. Aberdeen were missing the influential Kieran Roberts. Glengarry had fallen from third top to third bottom in the league in recent weeks and they had lost their previous four games without scoring a goal. They were missing the influence of injured talisman Steven Cameron but they did have Michael Brady available after his four match ban. Glengarry’s Daniel MacLennan, who was relieved of his defensive duties, played in attack and he grabbed the opening goal on 20 minutes. Jamie Bell made it 1-1 on 25 minutes but Daniel MacLennan got his second on 35 minutes to put the visitors 2-1 up at the break. Daniel Maclennan completed his hat-trick 10 minutes into the second half and although Jamie Bell got his second on 75 minutes, Glengarry took the points with a 3-2 victory. Lochaber 2 Newtonmore 6 The Lochaber and Newtonmore second teams met in a 2pm throw up at Spean Bridge just a week after their senior sides contested the Co-operative MacTavish Cup at the Bught Park, and the visitors ran out 6-2 winners. Newtonmore’s Scott Chisholm was absent as he served the second game of a two match ban. Pat Toal put Lochaber ahead on 5 minutes but they had little answer to Newtonmore’s Evan Menzies who was the day’s top scorer as he grabbed all six goals with a hat-trick in each half. Menzies scored on 15, 35 and 40 minutes to put Newtonmore 3-1 up at the break. Lochaber were again first to score in the second half when Martin Porter made it 3-2 on 50 minutes. However Evan Menzies completed a superb day’s work with goals on 60, 85 and 88 minutes to leave Newtonmore 5 points clear at the top of the table.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Lewis Camanachd 0 Lochbroom 2 Lewis Camanachd and Lochbroom renewed rivalries in their 2pm throw up at Shawbost. These sides first meetings date back to before Lewis formally joined the league in 2011. Lewis Camanachd’s Donald Lamont missed out as he started a two match suspension. Lochbroom secured the signing of Kinlochshiel forward Neil Fraser ahead of the game and he put his new side ahead 11 minutes into the second half. Fraser then showed what a key signing he could be when he got Lochbroom’s second on 70 minutes to seal a 2-0 win. Lochcarron P Caberfeidh P The meeting between Lochcarron and Caberfeidh at Battery Park was postponed at the request of the home side because of a bereavement. The game will now take place at Battery Park on Tuesday 26 June 2012 with a 7.30pm throw up. |
