23 May 2012 The Co-operative MacTavish Cup and AGJ Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup finalists are known following the semi-final ties on Saturday 19 May 2012.
Co-operative MacTavish Cup – Semi Finals Lochaber 2 Kingussie 1 Co-operative MacTavish Cup holders Kingussie were knocked out of this year’s competition following a dramatic ending to their quarter final tie with Lochaber at Spean Bridge. The sides met at the same venue last weekend when Kingussie came from 2-0 down to win 6-4 in a pulsating tie but Lochaber won much admiration for their performance. Kingussie were without the injured Paul Gow and they suffered a further blow as defender Lee Bain was unavailable. The tie was goalless until 4 minutes from time when referee Graham Irving awarded Lochaber a penalty when Scottish international Shaun Nicolson was impeded inside the D. Shaun Nicolson picked himself up and he was given the responsibility of putting his side in front and he produced a great strike to beat Andrew Borthwick in the Kings goal. Stuart Callison conjured up a goal fit to win any tie to make it 2-0 on 90 minutes and although Ronald Ross pulled a goal back in stoppage time, it is Lochaber who are deservedly through to the final. This tie was filmed for the Camanachd Association YouTube archive. Glenurquhart 2 Newtonmore 2 (after extra time – Newtonmore won 2-0 on penalties) There was also drama at Blairbeg where Glenurquhart met last year’s beaten finalists Newtonmore. Glenurquhart co-managers Fraser MacKenzie and Drew McNeil had Lewis MacLennan free from suspension following his one match ban for his sending off in the draw with Kingussie a fortnight ago. MacLennan’s return was a boost as he had been showing good form prior to his suspension. However forward Ruairidh Cameron was only fit enough for a place on the bench. Newtonmore were without Danny MacRae who hobbled out of the defeat to Kinlochshiel at Kirkton last weekend after just 5 minutes with a knee problem. He will see a specialist about the injury and is likely to be missing for a few weeks. With Chris Sellar also missing, he started a two match ban for his red card in the same game, and with David Cheyne not having played for several weeks; manager Norman MacArthur was relieved to welcome forward Glen MacKintosh back suspension. MacArthur sprung a surprise by playing Rory Kennedy in attack and Steven MacDonald in defence where he was excellent. Fraser Heath continued his good scoring run when he put the Glen ahead on 18 minutes but two strikes before the break from Glen MacKintosh on 40 minutes and Jamie Robinson 3 minutes later put ‘More 2-1 up. Billy Urquhart levelled matters on 59 minutes and with no further scoring; referee Innes Wood took the tie into extra-time. Glenurquhart edged the extra-time period but neither team was able to get a crucial third goal so the tie went to penalties. Fraser Heath stepped up first for Glenurquhart but his penalty was saved by ‘More keeper Michael Ritchie. Glen keeper Stuart MacKintosh then made a superb save just under the bar from Glen MacKintosh. John Barr was up next but his spot-hit went wide of target. Steven MacDonald was first to find the net when he scored to put ‘More 1-0 up after two penalties each. Eddie Tembo hit his effort straight at keeper Michael Ritchie and ‘More captain John MacKenzie fired low and hard into the net to put ‘More 2-0 ahead after three penalties each. Andrew Corrigan had to score to keep Glenurquhart in the tie but his miss meant Newtonmore go through to next month’s final. This tie was filmed for the Camanachd Association YouTube archive.
AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup – Semi Finals Bute 3 Inveraray 6 Inveraray beat Bute 6-3 in their 3pm derby clash at the Meadows. Chris Crawford and Garry MacPherson both scored a goal in each half. Chris Crawford put Inveraray ahead on 17 minutes and Garry MacPherson made it 2-0 just 3 minutes later. Ruairidh Graham set up Euan MacMurdo to score on 31 minutes to make it 3-0 at the interval and when Chris Crawford got his second a minute into the second half after Bute keeper Kevin Queen had stopped a Russell MacKinlay effort, the tie looked all but over. Bute mounted a fight-back though and when Roberto Zavaroni pulled a goal back on 65 minutes and Robert Walker nipped in to score on 76 minutes, Inveraray’s advantage was reduced to two goals. However Garry MacPherson got his second a couple of minutes later and Euan MacMurdo set up Russell MacKinlay who fired past Kevin Queen 10 minutes from time to give Inveraray a 6-2 lead. Referee Deek Cameron awarded both sides a penalty in the closing stages. Garry MacPherson saw his effort from the spot saved by Kevin Queen but Hector Whitelaw fired home Bute’s spot-hit a couple of minutes from time to leave Inveraray 6-3 winners and hot favourites to lift the trophy in next month’s final. Aberdour 1 Taynuilt 4 Taynuilt came from a goal down to beat Aberdour 4-1 in Fife. Taynuilt won 2-1 at the same venue at the end of April and a close tie was expected with both sides level on four points each in the league. Cameron MacCue scored the only goal of the first half on 27 minutes to give Aberdour the advantage at the break. However Taynuilt came back strongly in the second period and Willie Neilson made it 1-1 on 55 minutes. Michael MacQueen put the visitors in front 5 minutes later and Mark Beaton on 62 minutes and Stuart Scott on 74 minutes put Taynuilt through to the final. Gus Campbell was the match referee.
Balliemore Cup – First Round Beauly 3 Glenorchy 2 (after extra-time) The final Balliemore Cup first round tie saw Beauly throw away a two goal lead before beating Glenorchy 3-2 after extra-time in their 3pm throw up at Braeview Park. Kenneth MacKenzie and Martin MacFadyen missed out through injury for Beauly. The home side has had some mixed results since they dumped neighbours Lovat out of the Co-operative MacTavish Cup but goals from Jack MacDonald on 31 minutes and Ross Forbes on 55 minutes put Beauly 2-0 in front. However Glenorchy mounted a fight-back and late strikes from James Livingston on 75 minutes and John MacNulty on 83 minutes took the tie to extra-time. Marc McLachlan got the winner 3 minutes from the dreaded penalty shoot-out. Beauly have home advantage against Inverness in the second round next weekend.
Balliemore Cup – Quarter Finals Strachur 1 Kilmory 3 Kilmory are through to the Balliemore Cup semi-finals after an Alex Cunningham double helped them to 3-1 win at Strachur. Alan Paterson was available again for Strachur following a one game suspension. The sides met at the same venue on league duty last weekend when a Rhys Campbell double game Strachur the points. However this time Hal Jones added to Cunningham’s brace and although Brian Dickie responded for the home side, it is Strachur who ran out 3-1 winners and clinch a semi-final spot.
Sutherland Cup – Quarter Final Newtonmore 2 Caberfeidh 1 An Evan Menzies brace gave Marine Harvest North Division 2 leaders Newtonmore a 2-1 win over Caberfeidh to the Eilan. The home side was without suspended duo David Campbell and Brett Munro and Neil Stewart remained on the injury list following a dislocated knee. Newtonmore took the lead through Evan Menzies on just 3 minutes and a goal avalanche was expected. However Marine Harvest North Division 3 side Caberfeidh levelled on the half hour mark and they held the league and Strathdearn Cup holders until 5 minutes from time when Evan Menzies got his second to put ‘More through to the next round. Lovat 1 Fort William 3 Lovat and Fort William met at Balgate. Lovat were narrow 3-2 winners when the sides met at Balgate a few weeks ago. But this time the Fort returned home victors following a 3-1 win. Referee Daniel MacRae awarded Fort William a penalty after 5 minutes when veteran John MacLeod was brought down in the D. Jack Fraser didn’t connect well with his spot-hit and he was fortunate to see the ball find the back of the net. Jamie Matheson levelled for Lovat just 3 minutes later but the home side suffered a blow when they lost Matheson shortly after with a hamstring injury. John MacLeod put Fort William 2-1 up on 19 minutes and Jack Fraser got his second on 25 minutes. There was no further scoring so the 3-1 win takes Fort William through to the last four of the competition. Beauly 0 Glenurquhart 5 Marine Harvest North Division 3 side Beauly went down 5-0 to Glenurquhart from Marine Harvest North Division 2 in their noon throw up at Braeview Park. Beauly’s Rory Campbell missed out with a dislocated shoulder. All the goals came in the first half and the Glen took an early lead through Jack Hosie on 5 minutes and Ewen Menzies added a second a couple of minutes later. Ross Macaulay made it 3-0 and Jack Hosie completed his hat-trick with goals on 18 and 26 minutes. Beauly’s Martin Davidson was dismissed by referee Neil Ferguson and both sides missed second half penalties.

The sides met a couple of weeks ago at the Canal Parks when Kilmallie secured their first win of the season. Kinlochshiel’s Finlay MacRae has been hampered by a hamstring injury and he played at full back against Newtonmore last weekend. However he started in his usual position in attack for this one. Both sides were without their captains as Kinlochshiel’s Gordie MacDonald had a recurrence of a knee injury whilst John Stewart missed out for Kilmallie following his red card last week. Duncan “Ach” MacRae has forced his way into the ‘Shiel side this season and he put them into a two goal lead with a goal 5 minutes before half time and another 5 minutes into the second period, Finlay MacRae sealed the 3-0 with a strike 5 minutes from time. Kyles Athletic 2 Fort William 1 Kyles Athletic were back on their Tighnabruaich pitch for the first time this season following extensive drainage works which have taken place since the start of the year. This has seen their home matches to date played at Strachur. Fort William’s Alex Duncan served the second game of a two match ban but Niall MacPhee returned. Steven Stewart was available for the Fort before serving a one match ban next weekend. David Zavaroni had put Kyles ahead 3 minutes before the break but Gary Innes squared the game on the hour from the penalty spot. Marine Harvest South Division 1 Oban Celtic 0 Oban Camanachd 4 Mossfield wasn’t a place for the faint-hearted as the first Oban derby of the season between Oban Celtic and Oban Camanachd took centre stage at noon. Almost the length of the division separated the sides ahead of the game with Oban Camanachd in second place and Oban Celtic bottom of the table but these clashes are notoriously difficult to predict. Keeper Jack Hill was free from suspension for Oban Celtic following a two match ban however the influential Kenny Wotherspoon missed out as he served a one match suspension.
