20 March 2012 Reigning champions Newtonmore return to the top of shinty’s top division following the shinty league fixtures on Saturday 17 March 2012.
Orion Group Premiership Newtonmore 4 Kinlochshiel 2 Reigning champions Newtonmore returned to the top of the league with a 4-2 win over Kinlochshiel at the Eilan. Newly promoted Kinlochshiel could hardly have had a more difficult start to the season. They won their opening match against Kingussie at the Dell and then had to give up home advantage againstFortWilliambut still managed a 1-1 draw. Next up was a meeting with reigning champions Newtonmore at the Eilan in what was to be a game of two halves for the west coast side. Danny MacRae made is first start of the season for the home side and Fraser MacKintosh also returned from injury. Shiel started with brothers Finlay and Keith MacRae in attack.Newtonmore boss ‘Norman MacArthur gave David Cheyne a starting slot and he repaid his manager’s faith with a double strike on 7 and 21 minutes to put the home side two up. It looked ominous for ‘Shiel when Danny MacRae added a third on 28 minutes. However, following a lively half-time team talk from manager Johnston Gill, Shiel came quickly out of the blocks at the start of the second half. Scottish international Keith MacRae got his side back into the game with a goal a couple of minutes into the second half. Keith MacRae made it really interesting when he added his second on 64 minutes to reduce the deficit to a single goal. The visitors had chances to square the game but a Steven MacDonald strike 14 minutes from time clinched a 4-2 win. The win means Newtonmore leap-frog Lovat into top spot. The Balgate side was not in action as opponents Inveraray had a “free Saturday” as last weekend’s goal heroAndrewMacMurdo took his team-mates abroad on a stag do. Kingussie 0 Fort William 3 With the Black Parks, unplayable the match between Kingussie and Fort William was switched to the Dell with a 2.45pm throw up. Both sides are going through a period of reconstruction and their best chance of success this season will likely be in the cup competitions. Kingussie continued withoutRonald Rossbut club captain Craig Dawson took up the goal-scoring mantle with a hat-trick in the win over Kyles Athletic last weekend. Gary Innes returned for the Fort after missing last week’s draw with Kinlochshiel and defender Duncan Rodger was also be back in the side. A Daniel Stewart goal on 18 minutes was all that separated the sides at the break. However a two minute brace on 70 and 71 minutes from former Ballachulish player Scott Henderson earnedFortWilliama 3-0 victory in what was their first win of the season. Kyles Athletic 1 Glenurquhart 6 The match between Kyles Athletic and Glenurquhart was originally scheduled for the Winterton but an unplayable pitch meant a switch to Blairbeg for a3pmthrow up. Doubles from John Whyte and Thomas Whyte helped the visitors to a remarkable 6-1 win. As well as long term absentees, Grant Irvine and Sandy MacVicar, Kyles remained without Donald Irvine whilst the influential Dunkie Kerr was also be missing. Glenurquhart had injury problems of their own with Neale Reid still out and joint managers Fraser MacKenzie and Drew McNeil do not wish to rush him back too soon. Work commitments deprived the Glen of the services of Scottish internationalists John Barr andAndrewCorrigan. Ewen Campbell put Kyles ahead on 22 minutes but goals from John Whyte on 40 minutes and Thomas Whyte just 3 minutes later gave the visitors a 3-0 at the break. Thomas Whyte added his second on 70 minutes but David Smart pulled a goal back for the Glen on 76 minutes to make it 4-1. Late goals from Peter Currie – ahead of his move to the States – on 84 minutes and John Whyte’s second a minute from time completed a resounding 6-1 win. Bute 2 Kilmallie 2 Buteand Kilmallie meet on Rothesay. Kilmallie have been unfortunate not to take anything from their opening two fixtures against Glenurquhart and Lovat; losing both games by a single goal. Kilmallie were without defender Alan MacDonald after he picked up an injury against Lovat. A second minute Liam MacDonald goal got Kilmallie off to a great start and they held this lead until a Robert Walker strike squared the game on 69 minutes. Referee David Mitchell awarded Kilmallie a penalty 16 minutes from time. Michael Rodger was given the responsibility from the spot and he made no mistake to put the visitors back in front. However Hector Whitelaw earned the Islanders a point with a strike 5 minutes from time.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Caberfeidh 1 Beauly 1 Top billing in this division went to the clash between Caberfeidh and Beauly at Castle Leod. Caberfeidh were without midfielder Martin MacDonald who was suspended following his sending off against Skye a fortnight earlier. However the influential Ally MacLennan returned from his ban which was carried forward from last season. Beauly’s Scottish U21 international David MacLean shook off a knock to play and he put the league leaders ahead with a goal on the stroke of half time. However Ally MacLennan earned the home side a point with a goal a minute from time. Skye Camanachd 4 Strathglass 1 Skye Camanachd go second following a 4-1 win over Strathglass at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Click on the link to read the match report in full Inverness 2 Lochcarron 2 Invernessand Lochcarron shared the points following a 2-2 draw at the Bught Park. Ewan MacLeod is unavailable for Inverness. Michael MacMillan returned in goal for Lochcarron which allowed Kenny Ross to move to full centre. Lochcarron fell behind to a Somhairle MacDonald goal on just 6 minutes. However Scottish international Mark Sproule netted 7 minutes into the second half to cancel out the former Skye-man’s effort. James Cameron put Inverness back in front with a goal on 69 minutes but again Lochcarron fought back and Ben Dalgety, who is thriving on his switch from defence to attack, scored 4 minutes from time. Inverness forward James Cameron was red-carded a minute from time and he will miss next weekend’s trip to Skye.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Kilmory 0 Oban Camanachd 4 Kilmory faced a tough test when title favourites Oban Camanachd came to visit. Kilmory have been boosted by forward Hal Jones’ return to the side whilst Aidan MacIntyre has been in great form for the visitors. Jonathon Will scored twice for the Mossfield men whilst Aidan MacIntyre and Iain MacMillan got the others to clinch a 4-0 win which maintains the side’s 100% league record. Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Aberdour 1 Second place Glasgow Mid Argyll were at home to Aberdour. Mid Argyll had won both their opening games whilst Aberdour, who finished bottom of the league last season, were looking for their first point of the campaign. Many would have expected a home win but Aberdour had other ideas as they took both points from a 1-0 victory thanks to Kevin McKell’s goal after just 5 minutes. Glenorchy 2 Strachur 0 The first half of the meeting between recently relegated Glenorchy and recently promoted Strachur was goalless. Glenorchy’s experience started to tell though and Alex MacPherson put them ahead on 51 minutes. Lorne Brown made it 2-0 with a goal on 77 minutes.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Kinlochshiel 0 Newtonmore 3 Kinlochshiel played their first match at Kirkton this season with current champions Newtonmore the visitors. Kinlochshiel were without keeper Iain Cameron so Sandy MacDiarmid started in goal. Angus Gray, Evan Menzies and an own goal counted to give Newtonmore, who were minus Scott Campbell, a 3-0 victory. Glengarry 5 Lovat 1 Glengarry and Lovat clashed at Craigard, Invergarry. ‘Garry had won both their opening fixtures with Ewan Brady in fine form whilst Lovat were chasing their first point of the season. Lovat were without the injured Rory Cruden. Lovat’s Lewis Tawse scored the only goal of the first half on 25 minutes. Arran Clark made it 1-1 on 54 minutes and Clark took the opportunity to grab a second when referee Duncan Kelly awarded the home side a penalty and he made no mistake from the spot. ‘Garry sealed the win with three goals in the final 10 minutes. Steven Cameron made it 3-1 on 80 minutes whilst Arran Clark completed his hat-trick just four minutes later. Steven Cameron got his second four minutes from time and the 5-1 means Glengarry go second as they leap-frog Skye Camanachd on goal difference. Lochaber 3 Skye Camanachd 4 Skye Camanachd returned fromSpeanBridgewith both points following a 4-3 win over Lochaber. This was some-what of a surprise as both teams had what could be considered to be a successful 2011. Graham Campbell opened the scoring for the visitors a minutes before the break. However Rory Borthwick made it 1-1 on the hour mark. Just when a share of the points seemed likely, Scott Knox struck a minute from time gaveFortWilliama 2-1 win. Glenurquhart 4 Aberdeen University 1 Glenurquhart won their first points of the season with a 4-1 win over Aberdeen University in the 1pm throw up at Blairbeg. Calum Fraser put the home side ahead after 29 minutes and Jack Hosie made it 2-0 on 35 minutes. Calum Miller put the Glen in control with a 39 minute strike whilst a Daniel MacKintosh effort a minute from the break left the Glen 4-0 ahead at half time. John Sweeney scored a consolation goal for the Students nine minutes from time.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Col Glen 1 Kyles Athletic 3 Early leaders Col Glen went down 3-1 to Kyles Athletic. Chris Blair on 13 and 26 minutes and Roddy MacColl on the half hour, with what was his sixth goal of the season, all counted for Kyles. Donald MacPhail on 83 minutes got the Col Glen goal. Col Glen remain top but they are joined by four other teams, including third placed Kyles, on four points. Tayforth 1 Ballachulish 2 Goals from Garry Young and Nathan MacDade gave Ballachulish a 2-1 win over Tayforth in Musselburgh. Shane Mason replied for the home side. This win gives Ballachulish a 100% record from their two matches so far. Inveraray 0 Aberdour 0 The Inveraray and Aberdour second strings shared the points following a goalless draw. This was quite a turnaround for Tayforth who went down 9-0 in the corresponding game last season with Inveraray’s Gordon Watt getting a hat-trick. Ardnamurchan 7 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Ardnamurchan have enjoyed home advantage against Glasgow Mid Argyll. They were without. JD MacMaster who had been on target in the defeat to Tayforth last week. However they hardly missed him as they won 7-0 in this 1.30pm throw up. Mark Brazendale put Ardnamurchan ahead and Stuart Carmichael added a second and Ewen Mowat a third. Stuart Cameron, Zander MacGregor twice and Sean Laskey got the other goals. Lochside Rovers P Bute P The match between Lochside Rovers andButedid not go ahead as the Islanders couldn’t raise a team. The points go to the Oban side.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Beauly 5 Caberfeidh 1 League leaders Beauly beat Caberfeidh 5-1 at Braeview Park with former first team keeper Martin Davidson getting a hat-trick. However Cabers’ Blair Morrison shocked the home side with a first minute goal. Beauly rallied and Martin Davidson got his first on 4 minutes. Jordan Keil made it 2-1 on 8 minutes and Davidson got his second on 34 minutes. Jordan Keil also got his second goal of the game four minutes into the second half whilst Martin Davidson completed his hat-trick on 72 minutes and Beauly stay top. Lochcarron 7 Kilmallie 1 Lochcarron collected their first points of the season when they beat an under-strength Kilmallie 7-1 at Battery Park. Gregor Cushnie scored four times for the home side with Kenny Cushnie, David MacCuish and Iain Cameron getting the others. Ross MacKenzie countered for the visitors. This was Kilmallie’s first defeat of the season. Lochbroom 5 Inverness 0 Second place Lochbroom continued their good start to the season with a 5-0 win over Inverness in Ullapool. James Rolfe scored after 4 minutes to put the second place team ahead and Sandy Urquhart made it 2-0 on 15 minutes. Lorne Hughes added a third a couple of minutes before the break. Second half goals from Seumas Charity on 71 minutes and Jamie Stewart five minutes from time completed the 5-0 win. Strathglass 0 Lewis Camanachd 0 Strathglass and Lewis Camanachd played out a 0-0 draw at Cannich. The sides drew 2-2 at the same venue last year so this was always going to be a close one. The Islanders went closest to scoring when they were awarded a penalty by referee Robert Morrison but Stuart Campbell saw his effort saved. Strathspey Camanachd 1 Boleskine 7 Strathspey Camanachd were at home for the third successive game when they entertained Boleskine at Freuchie Park. However they found their visitors too hot to handle and Boleskine’s Lewis Smith was the day’s top scorer with five goals in Boleskine. Raymond Robertson and Craig Pirrie got the others. |
