The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 12 May 2012 | |
16 May 2012 There was plenty of cup action with Artemis Macaulay Cup, Strathdearn Cup and Bullough Cup ties all taking place on Saturday 12 May 2012.
Inveraray 2 Kyles Athletic 1 Artemis Macaulay Cup holders Kyles Athletic are out of this year’s competition following their 2-1 defeat to their bogey side Inveraray at the Winterton. A Euan MacMurdo goal on the hour mark was all that separated the sides in their AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup tie three weeks ago and Inveraray racked up another win in this 3pm throw up. Inveraray’s Gary MacPherson scored the only goal of the first half on 20 minutes but Kyles’ Ewan Campbell levelled 20 minutes from time. Chris Crawford got the winner in the final minute to put Inveraray through to the next round. Kinlochshiel 2 Newtonmore 1 Last year’s runners up Newtonmore are also out as they went down 2-1 to Kinlochshiel in their 12 noon throw up at Kirkton. Kinlochshiel manager Johnston Gill sprung a surprise by playing Finlay MacRae, who has been suffering from a hamstring problem, at full back. Paul MacRae was switched to buckshee back and John MacRae was pushed up to full forward. Newtonmore boss Norman MacArthur was without Glen MacKintosh who served the second match of a two game ban. Jamie Robinson started at full centre. Newtonmore suffered a blow after just 5 minutes when Danny MacRae had to come off with what appeared to be knee injury and Calum Stewart came on in his place. It was then 'Shiel's turn to suffer an injury blow as captain Gordie MacDonald departed; also with a knee problem. Neil Fraser came on in his place. 'More cameclose to scoring when a Chris Sellar shot came off the post. The opening goal came at the other end though on 39 minutes when Keith MacRae hit a great shot through a ruck of players and Kinlochshiel took this lead into the break. Neil Fraser almost doubled the home sides lead but he just failed to get on the end of a rebound following a Keith MacRae shot which was saved by Newtonmore keeper Michael Ritchie. Substitute Calum Stewart levelled the game on 72 minutes. However Newtonmore had Chris Sellar sent off shortly thereafter following a clash with John Don MacKenzie which was spotted by the goal judge. Being a man down did not seem to affect 'More and they pressed without really troubling home keeper Graham Kennedy. However ‘Shiel took advantage of the extra man late in the game and John MacRae went close to putting them ahead again when his shot whistled over the bar. ‘Shiel were not to be denied though and they got what proved to be the winner in the final minute. A was a goal fit to win any game as Scotland U21 international John MacRae fired a fantastic volley into the net to give his side a famous 2-1 victory. This tie was filmed for the Camanachd Association YouTube archive. Glenorchy 0 Oban Camanachd 1 A Scott MacMillan penalty just 6 minutes from time gave Oban Camanachd a 1-0 win over Glenorchy at Mart Park, Dalmally. Oban Camanachd had James MacMillan available before he serves a one match ban next weekend. The visitors went out of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup last weekend and they were keen not to exit from another cup competition in successive Saturdays. The crucial point of the tie came on 84 minutes when referee Duncan Kelly awarded Oban Camanachd a penalty and Scott MacMillan converted from the spot. Taynuilt 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Taynuilt had home advantage against Glasgow Mid Argyll. GMA had a great Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup win over Oban Camanachd last weekend and they were 6-1 winners when these sides met on league duty at the same venue on the second day of the shinty season. This was a much closer affair though before GMA eventually progressed. Scotland U17 international Craig Anderson gave GMA the lead but Taynuilt’s Willie Neilson levelled, However Mark Bain went on to continue his good scoring run and he netted to give Glasgow Mid Argyll a 2-1 victory. Taynuilt ran the Yoker men close though and they had a first half goal disallowed. The home side was also awarded a second half penalty by referee Billy Wotherspoon but Paul Creighton in the GMA goal made a great save from the spot-hit. Oban Celtic 2 Bute 5 Oban Celtic put up a good fight before going down 5-2 to Bute at Mossfield. Bute came out on top twice when the sides met in Marine Harvest South Division 1 last season and they started as favourites. Oban Celtic remained without the suspended Jack Hill. However they had Kenny Wotherspoon available ahead of a suspension next week. Graham Fisher put the Islanders ahead after 7 minutes and they held this lead until the stroke of half time when referee Robert Baxter awarded them a penalty. Up stepped Roberto Zavaroni and he made no mistake from the spot. Gordon MacMillan made it 3-0 on 53 minutes and Bute looked to be in control. However Oban Celtic had other ideas and strikes from Ally McKerracher on 58 minutes and Kenny Wotherspoon on 73 minutes reduced the deficit to a single goal. Bute halted the fight-back though when Roberto Zavaroni got his second 5 minutes later and Robert Walker made it 5-2 just 8 minutes from time. Lochaber 4 Kingussie 6 There were goals galore at Spean Bridge as Kingussie came from 2-0 down to beat on-form Lochaber 6-4. Michael Delaney’s side was along usual lines although Donald MacRae missed out as he was working. Kingussie boss Russell Jones was without the injured Paul Gow and Martin Dallas so Rory Borthwick was called into the pool. Louis Munro’s return from suspension meant Iain Borthwick reverted to his more accustomed full back role. Lochaber played with the wind at their backs in the first half and Scott Patterson gave them the lead on 16 minutes. Ben Delaney added another 3 minutes later to make it 2-0 and it looked good for the Spean Bridge men. However Kingussie benefited from an unfortunate Lachlan Campbell own goal on the half hour mark and Ronald Ross squared the tie just 4 minutes later. The visitors were fortunate to be on even terms at the break and Lochaber were about to rue not being able to take the lead they merited into the break. Fraser Munro put Kingussie ahead for the first time in the tie just a couple of minutes into the second half. Ronald Ross then went on to complete his hat-trick with goals on 52 and 65 minutes and this put the visitors 5-2 in front. Lochaber responded immediately and Shaun Nicolson fired past Andrew Borthwick to make it 5-3 before Ben Delaney got his second on 68 minutes to cut the deficit to a single goal. However substitute Rory Borthwick got Kingussie’s sixth on the stroke of full-time. The teams also meet at the same venue in the Co-operative Cup semi-finals this Saturday and Lochaber’s performance, especially Neil MacDonald in defence and their forward line, will give them great encouragement ahead of this week’s meeting. Lovat 3 Fort William 4 Fort William edged out Lovat following a seven goal thriller in their 3pm throw up at Balgate. The sides played a fortnight ago at the Black Parks when Lovat came from 2-0 down win 4-2. However it was the Fort who edged out this one. Lorne MacKay returned from suspension for the home side and James Grieve should be back from holiday. However Callum Cruden was banned. The Fort had a bit of a defensive crisis with Liam MacIntyre and Steven Stewart missing out. Full centre Niall MacPhee was working abroad and Alex Duncan was suspended but Gary Innes returned. Lewis Tawse put Lovat ahead on 17 minutes but Bryan Simpson made it 1-1 on 24 minutes. Owen Ferguson restored Lovat’s advantage 3 minutes later but a Gordie MacDonald double on 42 and 45 minute meant the Fort led 3-2 at the break. Ryan Campbell was on target to extend Fort William’s lead to 4-2 on 51 minutes and although Owen Ferguson pulled a goal back a minute from time, the visitors go through to the next round. This tie was also filmed for the Camanachd Association YouTube archive. Glenurquhart 4 Kilmallie 1 Fraser Heath scored twice for the second successive Saturday as Glenurquhart beat Kilmallie 4-1 in their 3pm throw up at Blairbeg. Glenurquhart co-managers Fraser MacKenzie and Drew McNeil were without Lewis MacLennan following his sending off late in the draw with Kingussie last week and Ruairidh Cameronalso missed out. Kilmallie boss John Morrison had Michael Rodger back from suspension for the visitors and Liam MacDonald was also back in their line-up and they went into the game on the back of a morale-boosting victory over Kinlochshiel the previous week. Fraser Heath gave the Glen the best possible start with a goal in the opening minute after Kevin Toye had saved from David Smart. Neale Reid made it 2-0 with a fine strike on 20 minutes whilst David Smart added a second a couple of minutes later as the home side made a whirl-wind start. Fraser Heath got his second off another rebound a couple of minutes before the break to put Glenurquhart 4-0 up at the break. Fraser Heath had the chance to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot but he put the ball over the bar. The visitors had captain John Stewart red carded by referee Evan MacRae following an off the ball incident. Ross Lavin pulled a goal back for Kilmallie 12 minutes from time with another good strike.
Strathdearn Cup – Second Round Skye Camanachd 3 Kingussie 0 Skye Camanachd put holders Newtonmore out of the Strathdearn Cup in the first round of the competition and they now beat Sutherland Cup holders Kingussie 3-0 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree in the second round. Click on the following link to read the match report in full Kinlochshiel 4 Glengarry 0 Glengarry made the short trip to Kirkton but it is Kinlochshiel who progress to the next round following a 4-0 win in their 3pm throw up. It took an extra-time Steven Cameron goal to separate the sides when they met at Craigard in the Sutherland Cup earlier in the season. This time doubles from Steven Fraser and Jordan Fraser gave Kinlochshiel a 4-0 win in what became an explosive tie. Kinlochshiel had Scott Kennedy sent off before a midfield clash saw three more players red-carded by referee John MacLeod; Colin MacDiarmid for ‘Shiel and Michael Brady and Ewan Brady for ‘Garry. Glenurquhart 9 Strathglass 0 Glenurquhart were too strong for Strathglass in their noon derby meeting at Blairbeg. The sides drew 0-0 in their pre-season Ally Ban Cup clash with the Glen struggling to find the net but they had no such problems in this game. Iain MacLeod scored a quick-fire double on 2 and 8 minutes and Euan Lloyd made it 3-0 a couple of minutes later. James Hurwood made it 4-0 on 21 minutes and a Daniel MacKintosh double on 30 and 35 minutes gave the Glen a commanding 6-0 lead at the break. Jack Hosie got the seventh on 65 minutes whilst a Ewan Menzies double on 75 and 84 minutes sealed a 9-0 triumph. Lovat 5 Aberdeen University 3 Lovat and Aberdeen University meet at Balgate for the second successive Saturday. A goal from former Skye Camanachd player Jamie Beaton gave the Students a 1-0 win last week. An early goal-burst in this noon throw up saw Lovat and Aberdeen University level at three goals each after just 28 minutes. John Sweeney put the Aberdeen side ahead on 5 minutes but Lovat cancelled that out with an eighth minute Jamie Matheson goal. The visitors went back in front through Kenny Macleod on 14 minutes but Lovat again levelled thanks to a Rory Campbell effort a couple of minutes later. Lovat took the lead for the first time thanks to Jamie Matheson’s second goal of the afternoon on 19 minutes but this time it was the Students who squared the game at 3-3 with just 28 minutes played. However second half goals from Jimmy MacKenzie on 52 minutes and Darren Urquhart on 72 minutes put Lovat through as 5-3 victors and they travel to Portree to face Skye Camanachd in the next round. Beauly 5 Lochaber 3 A Martin Davidson hat-trick helped Marine Harvest North Division 3 leaders Beauly to a 5-3 win over Marine Harvest North Division 2 side Lochaber in their noon meeting at Braeview Park. This was always going to be an interesting tie as the home side is out in front in Marine Harvest North Division 3 whilst Lochaber have put in some good recent performances in the league above. Beauly confirmed that Rory Campbell suffered a dislocated shoulder in training this week so he will be out for several weeks. Jordan Marshall also missed out as he was working. Martin Davidson put Beauly ahead on just 2 minutes and Scott Maclean notched a second on 10 minutes. Davidson got his second 5 minutes later and Beauly held this 3-0 lead until the break. Martin Davidson completed his hat-trick a couple of minutes into the second half and when Scott Holmes made it 5-0 on 53 minutes, the tie looked over as a contest. However Lochaber rallied and Keith Neville pulled a goal back 3 minutes later. Two goals in two minutes from U17 player Duncan MacKinnon on 70 and 71 minutes made it 5-3 and gave Beauly a more uncomfortable end to the game than had looked likely less than 20 minutes earlier. Lochbroom 1 Fort William 7 Marine Harvest North Division 3 side Lochbroom went down 7-1 to Fort William, who are bottom of Marine Harvest North Division 2, in Ullapool. Neil Clark got a hat-trick and Alan Knox got two for the visitors. Their other goals came from U17 player Lewis Morrison and Jack Fraser. Martin MacLean got a consolation strike for Lochbroom. Fort William were beaten semi-finalists last year and they will be looking to go further this year. Lochcarron 4 Kilmallie 5 There was an exciting all-Marine Harvest North Division 3 meeting between Lochcarron and Kilmallie in their noon throw up at Battery Park. Gregor Cushnie put Lochcarron ahead on 21 minutes but a double from Seb MacMillan on 28 and 36 players put the visitors in front. A strike a couple of minutes later former Ballachulish player Grant MacKenzie put Kilmallie into a 3-1 lead at the break. When MacKenzie got his second to make it 4-1 on 75 minutes, it looked all over for Lochcarron. However the home side refused to lie down and they mounted a fantastic fight-back. Gregor Cushnie reduced the deficit on 75 minutes and two goals in two minutes from Iain Cameron on 80 minutes and Gregor Cushnie 60 seconds later to complete his hat-trick squared the tie at 4-4. However it was to no avail as Grant MacKenzie went on to complete his hat-trick with a goal 5 minutes from time to give Kilmallie a dramatic 5-4 win. Boleskine 4 Inverness 1 It took extra-time to separate Boleskine and Inverness in their derby clash at Farr. Goals from Boleskine’s Annie Butterworth and Michael Price for Inverness took the game into a final 30 minute period. Strikes from Iain Grant, Lewis Smith and Raymond Robertson took Boleskine through.
Bullough Cup – First Round Inveraray 4 Kyles Athletic 1 Inveraray also won the second team meeting between themselves and Kyles Athletic in their noon clash at the Winterton. Roddy MacColl grabbed a hat-trick when Kyles had a 7-0 home win in their league meeting at the end of March. However this time it was Inveraray’s Derek Robertson bagged a treble in a 4-1 win. Lewis MacNicol got the other home goal whilst Colin MacDonald replied for Kyles Athletic. Tayforth 3 Col Glen 2 Tayforth had home advantage against Col Glen and they ran out 3-2 winners. Both sides are out of the Sutherland Cup so this was their only chance of cup success. David Arnott scored twice when Tayforth came out on top with a 6-0 victory when the sides met earlier in the season. Arnott did the same again this time as his brace and an Andy Scott strike counted for the home side. Fraser Byrne and Steven MacKellar replied for Col Glen. Bute 3 Aberdour 0 John MacIntyre, Ally Carmichael and Tom MacMillan were all on target as Bute beat Aberdour 3-0 at the Meadows.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Lochcarron 0 Skye Camanachd 3 Lochcarron and Skye Camanachd met for the second time in three weeks, this time in a 3pm throw up at Battery Park. Click on the following link to read the match report in full Beauly 0 Caberfeidh 4 Beauly welcomed Caberfeidh for their 3pm throw up at Braeview Park. Beauly started the day second top in the table whilst Caberfeidh were second bottom. However Cabers had two games in hand and a decent recent record against their opponents. A last minute Ally MacLennan goal helped Cabers to a share of the points when the sides met in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season. Stewart Krzyzanoski put Caberfeidh ahead 4 minutes from the break against. Scott MacPhail on 56 minutes and Martin MacDonald on 72 minutes extended Cabers’ lead before Stewart Krzyzanoski added his second of the game 8 minutes from time to give the Castle Leod side both points from a 4-0 win. To cap a bad day for the home side, they lost Kenny MacKenzie and Martin MacFadyen picked up head injuries. Inverness 7 Strathglass 0 Inverness beat Strathglass 7-0 at the Bught Park and the score had the Inverness historians wondering when their side last racked up so many goals in one game. A Somhairle MacDonald double helped Inverness to a 2-2 draw when the sides met at Cannich on the second Saturday of the shinty season and the former Skye Camanachd forward was to have a big say in this one too. He got the opener on just 2 minutes and added a second 7 minutes later. Connor Golabeck added a third on 14 minutes and this early goals burst gave the Capital side a 3-0 lead at the break. Somhairle MacDonald completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes to make it 4-0. With no first team game last weekend, new signing David Wylde had been given a run out in the Inverness reserve side and former Newtonmore second team forward counted with a couple of goals. Wylde made his first team debut this week and he made it 5-0 on 72 minutes. Connor Golabeck got his second and the home sides’ sixth on 82 minutes and David Wylde got his second just 3 minutes later to round off the seven goal victory.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Strachur 2 Kilmory 0 Strachur had home advantage against Kilmory and they had the chance to move off the bottom of the table with their nearest rivals not in action. Strachur were without Alan Paterson who was serving a one match ban for an accumulation of bookings and Hal Jones served the second game of a two match ban for the visitors. Strachur took the points with a 2-0 win and Rhys Campbell got both their goals.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Lochside Rovers 3 Ardnamurchan 1 Lochside Rovers scored three second half goals to beat Ardnamurchan 3-1 in Oban. Connor Howe put the Lochside Rovers ahead on 57 minutes but Ardnamurchan’s John Nudds shocked the league leaders with a 72 minute strike. Craig MacDougall put the Oban side back in front on 79 minutes and they held this slender advantage until the final minute when Brian MacCallum fired home to make it 3-1.
