The Shinty Preview – Saturday 12 May 2012 | |
11 May 2012 There is plenty of cup action with Artemis Macaulay Cup, Strathdearn Cup and Bullough Cup ties all taking place on Saturday 12 May 2012.
Artemis Macaulay Cup – First Round Inveraray v Kyles Athletic Artemis Macaulay Cup holders Kyles Athletic could hardly have been given a tougher opening round tie than this weekend’s trip to the Winterton to play Inveraray. A Euan MacMurdo goal on the hour mark was all that separated the sides in the AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup three weeks ago as Inveraray continue to be a bogey team for the Tighnabruaich men. Throw up is at 3pm. Glenorchy v Oban Camanachd Glenorchy welcome Oban Camanachd to Mart Park, Dalmally. Oban Camanachd have James MacMillan available before he serves a one match ban next weekend. The visitors went out of the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup last weekend and they will keen not to exit from another cup competition in successive Saturdays. Taynuilt v Glasgow Mid Argyll Taynuilt have home advantage against Glasgow Mid Argyll. GMA had a great Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup win over Oban Camanachd last weekend and they were 6-1 winners when the sides met on league duty at the same venue on the second day of the shinty season. Oban Celtic v Bute Oban Celtic meet Bute at Mossfield. Bute came out on top twice when the sides met in Marine Harvest South Division 1 last season and they will start as favourites. Oban Celtic remain without the suspended Jack Hill. Kinlochshiel v Newtonmore There is an intriguing tie at Kirkton where Kinlochshiel play Newtonmore. Kinlochshiel manager Johnston Gill still has an injury concern over Finlay MacRae who started on the bench last week because of a hamstring problem. Calum MacLean was also a substitute in the defeat to Kilmallie because of a face knock. Newtonmore boss Norman MacArthur will be without Glen MacKintosh who serves the second match of a two game ban and David Cheyne remains an absentee. This tie will be filmed for the Camanachd Association YouTube archive. Throw up is at 12 noon. Lochaber v Kingussie On-form Lochaber welcome Kingussie to Spean Bridge. Michael Delaney’s side should be along usual lines although Donald MacRae misses out as he is working. Kingussie boss Russell Jones will be without Martin Dallas and Paul Gow because of injury. This tie should be a cracker. The teams also meet at the same venue in the Co-operative Cup semi-finals. Lovat v Fort William Lovat and Fort William meet at Balgate. The sides played a fortnight ago at the Black Parks when Lovat came from 2-0 down to run out 4-2 winners. Lorne MacKay returns from suspension for the home side and James Grieve should be back from holiday. However Callum Cruden is banned. The Fort have a bit of a defensive crisis with Liam MacIntyre and Steven Stewart missing out. Alex Duncan is suspended, Naill MacPhee is working abroad but Gary Innes returns. This tie will be filmed for the Camanachd Association YouTube archive. Throw up is at 3pm. Glenurquhart v Kilmallie Glenurquhart play Kilmallie at Blairbeg. Glenurquhart co-managers Fraser MacKenzie and Drew McNeil will be without Lewis MacLennan following his sending off late in the draw with Kingussie last week. Ruairidh Cameron will also miss out. Michael Rodger returns from suspension for the visitors. Peter Carmichael is a doubt for Kilmallie after picking up a knock in last week’s win over Kinlochshiel. Throw up is at 3pm.
Strathdearn Cup – Second Round Skye Camanachd v Kingussie Skye Camanachd put holders Newtonmore out of the Strathdearn Cup in the first round of the competition and they now face Sutherland Cup holders Kingussie at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Chris Rose and Iain MacLellan return for the Islanders. Kingussie remain without the injured Greg MacRae. Kinlochshiel v Glengarry Glengarry make the short trip to Kirkton to play Glengarry. It took an extra-time Steven Cameron goal to separate the sides when they met at Craigard in the Sutherland Cup earlier in the season. Throw up is at 3pm. Glenurquhart v Strathglass There is a derby at Blairbeg where Glenurquhart play Strathglass. Glenurquhart should be favourites although the sides did draw 0-0 in their pre-season Ally Ban Cup clash. Ewan Fraser is an injury doubt for the Glen. Euan Lloyd picked up a knock against Kingussie last week but he should be fit. Throw up is at 12 noon. Lovat v Aberdeen University Lovat and Aberdeen University meet at Balgate for the second successive Saturday. A goal from former Skye Camanachd player Jamie Beaton gave the Students a 1-0 win last week. Throw up is at 12 noon. Beauly v Lochaber There should be an interesting tie at Braeview Park between Beauly and Lochaber. The home side is out in front in Marine Harvest North Division 3 whilst Lochaber have put in some good recent performances in the league above. Beauly have confirmed that Rory Campbell suffered a dislocated shoulder in training this week so he will be out for several weeks. Jordan Marshall will miss out as he is working. Throw up is at 12 noon. Lochbroom v Fort William Marine Harvest North Division 3 side Lochbroom meet Fort William, who are bottom of Marine Harvest North Division 2, in Ullapool. Lochbroom went out at the same stage of the competition last season whilst Fort William were beaten semi-finalists. Lochcarron v Kilmallie There is an all-Marine Harvest North Division 3 meeting between Lochcarron and Kilmallie at Battery Park. Kilmallie will hope to put last week’s team raising difficulties behind them. Throw up is at 12 noon. Boleskine v Inverness There is a local derby at Farr where Boleskine host Inverness. Boleskine will start as favourites although the Inverness ranks were boosted last week when new signing David Wylde made a scoring debut in the win over Strathglass.
Bullough Cup – First Round Inveraray v Kyles Athletic There is a second team meeting between Inveraray and Kyles Athletic at the Winterton. Roddy MacColl grabbed a hat-trick when Kyles had a 7-0 home win in their league meeting at the end of March. Throw up is at 12 noon. Tayforth v Col Glen Tayforth have home advantage against Col Glen. David Arnott scored twice when Tayforth came out on top with a 6-0 victory when the sides met earlier in the season. Both sides are out of the Sutherland Cup so this is their only chance of cup success. Bute v Aberdour Bute meet Aberdour at the Meadows.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Beauly v Caberfeidh Beauly play Caberfeidh at Braeview Park. Beauly are second top in the table whilst Caberfeidh are second bottom. Cabers have two games in hand on their opponents though and both sides have lost twice in the league to date. A last minute Ally MacLennan goal helped Cabers to a share of the points when the sides met in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season. Throw up is at 3pm. Lochcarron v Skye Camanachd Lochcarron and Skye Camanachd meet for the second time in three weeks, this time in league action at Battery Park. Skye edged out their earlier Balliemore Cup meeting and this is sure to be another close affair. Defender Ross Matheson has completed his suspension for the home side. Skye’s Iain Nicolson also returns but keeper Aonghas MacDonald is unavailable so Iain Munro will play in goal. Throw up is at 3pm. Inverness v Strathglass Inverness welcome Strathglass to the Bught Park. A Somhairle MacDonald double helped Inverness to a 2-2 draw when the sides met at Cannich on the second Saturday of the shinty season.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Strachur v Kilmory Strachur have home advantage against Kilmory. The home side has the chance to move off the bottom of the table with their nearest rivals not in action. Strachur will be without Alan Paterson who has a one match ban for an accumulation of bookings and Hal Jones serves the second game of a two match ban for the visitors.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Lochside Rovers v Ardnamurchan Lochside Rovers meet Ardnamurchan in Oban. The home side has a 100% record from their nine games so far this season and they have averaged almost six goals scored per game. Ballachulish W/O v Glasgow Mid Argyll This match between Ballachulish and Glasgow Mid Argyll was to take place at the Black Parks, Fort William as Ballachulish’s Jubilee Park pitch is not yet ready for use. However the Ballachulish have been awarded the points as Glasgow Mid Argyll are unable to raise a team.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Strathspey Camanachd v Caberfeidh Freuchie Park is the venue for Strathspey Camanachd’s match with Caberfeidh. It has been wet in the Strathspey area and the home side will hope that forward Gavin Wood and defender Graham Shand will have recovered from mid-week injuries. |
