The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 6 October 2012 | |
07 October 2012 The 2012 shinty season is nearing an end and there were a small number of fixtures on Saturday 6 October 2012.
Orion Group Premiership Kingussie 1 Inveraray 2 It was a much changed Kingussie side which went down 2-1 to Inveraray in their noon throw up at the Dell. The home side included a large contingent of the youngsters who won the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup the previous weekend along with the more experienced Michael Clark, John Gibson and Ricky Grant. Manager Russell Jones was on holiday so Davie Anderson looked after the side. Inveraray, by contrast, were only a couple of players short of their Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final squad in what was manager John Smylie’s last game in charge after intimating his decision to step down at the end of the season. The visitors had Euan McMurdo back in attack after he missed last week’s draw with Kyles Athletic and he put his side ahead after 15 minutes. David MacPherson made it 2-0 just 10 minutes later. Lee Bain, Paul Gow and Louis Munro were the only regulars to line-up for the Kings and Bain pulled a goal back 5 minutes from the break. There was no scoring in the second half although a Michael Clark effort for Kingussie was ruled out by the goal judge. The two points mean Inveraray leap-frog Kingussie and Glenurquhart (on goal difference) to finish in fifth place in what was the final game of the Orion Group Premiership season.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Skye Camanachd 3 Strathglass 0 Skye Camanachd beat Strathglass 3-0 at Pairc nan Loach, Portree as both teams completed their final game of the season. Skye went ahead after just 2 minutes when Aonghas MacDonald pounced on a poor goal-hit and bundled the ball over the line. The home side doubled their advantage on the half hour mark when Aonghas MacDonald got on the end of a Darryl Macintosh corner and his deflected shot wrong-footed keeper Steve MacLauchlan. Stewart Grant scored his first goal for the senior team on 77 minutes when he fired through a ruck of players to make it 3-0. Danny Morrison and Stewart Grant were top performers for the Islanders who finish the season in second place in the league. The home side were without the suspended Jack MacDonald although Conor Ross was available again. Lochaber travelled minus Lachlan Campbell and Neil MacDonald at the back and forward Zandz Ferguson. However Stuart Callison returned from injury and he put Lochaber ahead after just 7 minutes. Shaun Nicolson added a second 3 minutes later to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead. However Martin Davidson halved their advantage on 17 minutes and Barrie MacDonald squared the game at the break with a 35 minutes strike. Barrie MacDonald scored his second of the afternoon a couple of minutes into the second half to put Beauly ahead for the first time in the game. However two goals in three minutes from Scott Patterson on 52 minutes and Ben Delaney on 55 minutes swung the advantage back Lochaber’s way. Shaun Nicolson scored his second on 63minutes to round off a 5-3 victory. Lochaber have still to be presented with the Marine Harvest North Division 1 trophy with an away trip to Lochcarron scheduled before the international fortnight and a home meeting with Inverness due the week after.
