03 August 2012 It was a great day for Newtonmore as their first team made it through to the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup semi-finals and their second team won the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final following the shinty fixtures on Saturday 28 July 2012.

Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Quarter-Finals Newtonmore 1 Lochaber 0 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup holders Newtonmore are through to the semi-finals following a single goal win over Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Lochaber at the Eilan. There was a minutes silence at the start of this tie to remember Belle Ross. These sides met in the Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final where ‘More ran out 5-1 winners at the Bught Park. However Lochaber are a better team for that experience and this noon throw up was a much closer affair. Newtonmore captain John MacKenzie was free of suspension whilst Lochaber wing back Brian MacDonald missed out with a broken hand. In the end a Fraser MacKintosh strike on 59 minutes was all that separated the sides although Newtonmore and home keeper Michael Ritchie had to be on top form to deny Lochaber on a few occasions. Newtonmore now go on to play Kyles Athletic at Mossfield in the semi-finals on Saturday 11 August 2012.
Orion Group Premiership Inveraray 4 Lovat 1 Title challengers Lovat knew they would be put to the test when they travelled to the Winterton to play Inveraray. Inveraray captain Scott Robertson was still missing whilst Euan McMurdo was on holiday and Davie MacPherson was rested. Inveraray were third bottom of the league ahead of the game and they trailed second place Lovat by nine points. However they do have four games in hand. Russell MacKinlay on 23 minutes and Greg Matheson on 35 minutes exchanged first half goals to leave the sides level at half time. MacKinlay got his second 5 minutes into the second half and late goals from Garry MacPherson on 74 minutes and Neil Campbell 4 minutes later gave Inveraray a 4-1 win. Kyles Athletic 6 Glenurquhart 3 Three goals in the last 19 minutes gave Kyles Athletic two valuable points and a 6-3 win over Glenurquhart at the Winterton. Kyles Athletic had full back Donald Irvine back after he missed the previous weekend’s defeat to Newtonmore because of work commitments. However young defender Zac Coley was out as he sustained a fractured finger when representing the Scotland U17s in their midweek win over Dublin U17 at Parnell Park. Glen defender Stuart Reid was unavailable for this 3pm start. Kyles got off to a superb start as Ewen Campbell on 3 minutes, David Zavaroni on 7 minutes and Roddy MacDonald 4 minutes later were all on target to give the home side a 3-0 lead after just 11 minutes. However James MacPherson netted a first half hat-trick with goals on 21, 30 and 43 minutes to make it 3-3 at the break. And that’s the way it remained until 71 minutes when Robbie MacLeod put Inveraray back in front. A late Fraser MacDonald double on 85 and 89 minutes sealed the 6-3 win. Kyles now only trail leaders Newtonmore on goal difference although they have played a game more. Bute 1 Fort William 1 Bute and Fort William drew 1-1 at the Meadows. Fort William captain Bryan Simpson was on holiday, Gary Innes was unavailable and Alex Duncan served the second game of a three match ban. However defender Kyle Grant was available before serving a one match suspension next weekend for a points accumulation and he was joined in the squad by his brothers Mark and Cameron Grant for this 3pm throw up. Both goals came late in the game with Robert Ferguson putting Bute ahead after 70 minutes and Alan Knox levelling 10 minutes later. Despite picking up the point, Bute are on the brink of relegation back down to Marine Harvest South Division 1.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Skye Camanachd 1 Caberfeidh 1 League leaders Skye Camanachd drew 1-1 with second place Caberfeidh at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Strathglass were without new signing Innes Simpson whose torn calf picked up in his debut against Lochcarron could keep him on the side-lines for the rest of the season. Inverness were again be without Somhairle MacDonald whilst Davie Glass recovered from injury to play. Forward James Cameron started a two match ban for his red card against Beauly a fortnight ago. Robert Geddes gave the home side an opening minute lead. However former Strathglass player Scott Douglas drew Inverness level on 15 minutes. Davie Glass put the visitors in front on 35 minutes but a 70 minute Mark MacLeod goal looked to have won Strathglass a share of the points until the later winner from Glass.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Strachur 2 Oban Camanachd 3 It took a Lorne Dickie goal 8 minutes from time to give Oban Camanachd a 3-2 win over Strachur at the Strachurmore Sports Centre. The sides met at Mossfield last weekend with the Oban team running out 6-1 winners but this was a much closer affair. Oban Camanachd were without the suspended Gareth Evans. Strachur’s Rhys Campbell netted on 38 minutes to cancel out Aidan MacIntyre’s 26 opener for the home side. Steven Bulloch scored for the home side 3 minutes before the break to give Strachur a 2-1 half-time advantage. However Oban Camanachd’s Iain MacMillan made it 2-2 on 65 minutes before Lorne Dickie’s 82 minute winner for the title favourites. Glenorchy 1 Taynuilt 2 Taynuilt had a shock 2-1 win over Glenorchy 2-1 at Mart Park. A Ciaran MacKay double gave Taynuilt a 3-1 win when the sides met in the corresponding fixture in March and they did the double with this win. Taynuilt were without last weekend’s two goal hero Willie Irving. Lorne Browne scored for the home side but strikes from Willie Neilson and Michael MacQueen won the points for the visitors. Glasgow Mid Argyll 7 Kilmory 0 A Craig Anderson hat-trick and two from Andy Mathie helped Glasgow Mid Argyll to a 7-0 win over Kilmory at Yoker. GMA were without Garry Luke who has a broken ankle. Kilmory’s Bruce Johnston was available before he starts a suspension. Fulton Ross put GMA ahead on 11 minutes whilst Andy Mathie made it 2-0 on 18 minutes. Craig Anderson got his first goal on 22 minutes to give the home side a 3-0 lead at the break. Anderson got his second on 50 minutes and Andy Mathie got his second just 60 seconds later to make it 5-0. Scotland U17 forward Craig Anderson completed his hat-trick with a 70 minute drive and Angus MacIntosh wrapped up the 7-0 victory with a goal a minute from time.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Fort William 1 Glenurquhart 3 Fort William took on Glenurquhart at the Black Parks. The Fort were 2-0 winners when the sides recently met at the same venue in the Strathdearn Cup semi-finals but this was Glen’s day. Mark Fraser put the home side ahead on 15 minutes with the only goal of the first half. However second half goals from Calum Fraser on 51 minutes; Jack Hosie a couple of minutes later and Iain MacLeod on 78 minutes gave the visitors both points in a 3-1 win. Skye Camanachd 4 Aberdeen University 3 A Jordan Murchison hat-trick helped Skye Camanachd to a fortunate 4-3 win over Aberdeen University at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Daniel MacLennan struck for Glengarry after just 2 minutes and they took this single goal lead into the break. The goals flowed in the second half and MacLennan got his second on 50 minutes. Arran Clark made it 3-0 a couple of minutes later and he went on to complete his hat-trick with goals on 60 and 65 minutes to make it 5-0. Lovat rallied and Rory Campbell on 66 minutes and Steven Cameron on 75 minutes reduced the deficit.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Aberdour 2 Lochside Rovers 9 Aberdour went down 9-2 to league leaders Lochside Rovers in Fife. Daniel MacKinnon got four and Brian MacCallum bagged a hat-trick. Daniel MacKinnon was on target on 13 and 30 minutes to put the visitors two up and Brian MacCallum got a third on 34 minutes. Daniel MacKinnon completed his hat-trick on 52 minutes whilst Brian MacCallum got his second on 64 minutes. Daniel MacKinnon got his fourth 5 minutes later to make it 6-0. Martin MacEwan on 70 minutes and David Lafferty on 79 minutes extended the Oban side’s advantage and Brian MacCallum completed his hat-trick 5 minutes from time when he made it 9-0. Chris Bowerman got some consolation for Aberdour when he netted two goals in the final two minutes but Lochside ran out 9-2 winners. Two more wins will give Lochside the title and a return to Marine Harvest South Division 1 providing Oban Camanachd win promotion to the Orion Group Premiership. Col Glen 2 Ballachulish 2 Col Glen and Ballachulish shared the points following a 2-2 draw. David MacPhee put Ballachulish ahead on 16 minutes but Col Glen levelled through a Kieran Limbert goal on 35 minutes. David MacPhee got his second on 70 minutes to put the visitors back in front. However a Grant Symmers own goal just 4 minutes from time meant a share of the points. Bute W/O v Ardnamurchan Ardnamurchan were unable to raise a team for their trip to the Meadows to play Bute so the points went to the home side. Kyles Athletic W/O v Glasgow Mid Argyll Glasgow Mid Argyll were unable to raise a team for their trip to Tighnabruaich to play Kyles Athletic so the points went to the home side. Tayforth W/O v Inveraray Inveraray were unable to raise a team for their match at Tayforth so the points went to the home side.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Strathglass 0 Beauly 4 Strathglass and Beauly brought forward their Cannich meeting to Friday 27 July 2012. Beauly were without Jordan Keil who was unavailable for the game. Martin Davidson, a Sean Stewart double and a Connor Ross goal gave Beauly a 4-0 win which puts them another step closer to the title. Lewis Camanachd 0 Boleskine 5 Lewis Camanachd played their final home match of the season against Boleskine at Shawbost where a second half Lewis Smith hat-trick contributed to Boleskine’s 5-0 win. Boleskine took the lead on 10 minutes thanks to an Anne Butterworth strike. Lewis Smith made it 2-0 a minute into the second half and he got his second on the hour mark when referee Robert Morrison awarded the visitors a penalty and Smith converted. Lewis Smith completed his hat-trick on 74 minutes and a Ewen Fraser goal on the stroke of half-time sealed a 5-0 win. With only a trip to Beauly remaining, this has been another successful season for the Islanders in terms of fulfilling their fixtures despite the travel involved. Strathspey Camanachd 2 Lochcarron 3 Lochcarron travelled to Freuchie Park to play Strathspey Camanachd. New boys Strathspey had already amassed 10 points ahead of this game and they came very close to adding to their tally in this one. The visitors had not played since the first Saturday of the month but they had won their last four games and, despite being under-strength, they made it five in a row with a narrow 3-2 win. Andrew Slaughter scored three times with goals on 10, 20 and 50 minutes to put Lochcarron 3-0 ahead. However Alan Stewart pulled a goal back to make it 3-1 on 65 minutes. Referee John Matheson awarded the home side a last minute penalty and David Noble held his nerve to convert. However Strathspey had little time left to try to level and Lochcarron returned home with both points. Caberfeidh 1 Kilmallie 4 Caberfeidh went down 4-1 to Kilmallie in their noon throw at Castle Leod. Caberfeidh’s Graham MacGregor served a one match suspension for a points accumulation. Seb MacMillan gave Kilmallie a 6 minute lead from the penalty spot and this was the only goal of the first half. Mark Graham made it 2-0 on 58 minutes. Caberfeidh’s Ruairidh McCreadie pulled a goal back on 64 minutes but goals from Robbie MacFadyen and Andrew MacMaster gave Kilmallie both points from a 4-1 win. |
