16 July 2012 Inveraray, Kinlochshiel, Kyles Athletic and Newtonmore or Lochaber will go into Tuesday’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup semi-final draw following the quarter-final ties played on Saturday 14 July 2012.
Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Quarter Finals Skye Camanachd 2 Kyles Athletic 5 Kyles Athletic were the first team through to the Scottish Hydro Camanachd semi-finals following their 5-2 win over Skye Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Click on the following link to read the match report in full Kilmallie 2 Inveraray 3 Inveraray had to work hard to get by a determined Kilmallie side in their 1.30pm throw up at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie were without some first team regulars for their defeat to Kingussie the previous week but forward Michael Rodger returned for this one. However Martin Stewart started a two match suspension for a points accumulation. Inveraray were left smarting from their shock 4-3 Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-final defeat to Oban Camanachd last weekend and they missed two penalties in that tie. Andrew MacMurdo put the visitors ahead on 26 minutes and Chris Crawford added a second 4 minutes before the break. Kilmallie’s Ryan Stewart pulled a 57 minute goal back before Crawford got his second from the penalty spot on 68 minutes to restore Inveraray’s two goal advantage. Michael Rodger reduced the deficit to a single goal once again after 73 minutes but Inveraray held on for a final four spot. Kilmallie captain John Stewart suffered a head knock which later required several stitches. Lovat 1 Kinlochshiel 3 Kinlochshiel are through to their first ever Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup semi-final following a 3-1 win over Lovat at Balgate. These sides have been two of this season’s success stories in the Orion Group Premiership they have already had two close encounters in the league. Lovat’s Lorne MacKay has been suffering from a hernia problem and although he returned against Bute last week, he needed several stitches below his eye following his substitute appearance. Lovat boss Allan MacRae gave him place on a strong Lovat bench which also included Euan Ferguson, Fraser Gallacher and Calum Macaulay. Kinlochshiel manager Johnston Gill was without defender John Don Mackenzie who picked up a leg knock which led to his substitution during the first half of his team’s defeat to Newtonmore last week. First half goals from Keith MacRae on 27 minutes and Finlay MacRae on 34 minutes put ‘Shiel 2-0 up at half-time. Greg Matheson pulled a goal back from the penalty spot 7 minutes into the second half although he was fortunate that his mishit effort beat Graham Kennedy in the ‘Shiel goal. Teenage striker Jordan Fraser, who came on in place of Gordie Macdonald, sealed the Kirkton side’s semi-final spot with a 75 minute goal to clinch the 3-1 victory. Mark MacDonald followed up his marking job on Danny MacRae last week with a similar role against Greg Matheson and MacDonald was one of ‘Shiel’s top performers. The MacRae brothers; Finlay, Keith and John, also had a big influence on the game. Newtonmore P Lochaber P The tie between Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup holders Newtonmore and Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Lochaber at the Eilan was postponed at Lochaber’s request because of the sad passing of former Glengarry stalwart Finlay Nicolson who played for the ‘Garry in the 1970s & 1980s and who is the father of Lochaber players Shaun Nicolson and Finlay Nicolson. He passed away last Monday after a short illness and his funeral will take place at Fort Augustus Parish Church on Wednesday 18 July 2012 at 1pm. The internment will take place at Strathoich Cemetery thereafter. The tie will now be played on Saturday 28 July 2012.
Strathdearn Cup – Quarter Final Beauly 2 Kilmallie 1 There was an all-Marine Harvest North Division 3 Strathdearn Cup quarter-final tie between Beauly and Kilmallie at Braeview Park Both sides reached the quarter-finals of this season’s Sutherland Cup before exiting the competition to higher league opposition and the sides have yet to meet this season as Kilmallie were unable to raise a team for their league meeting at Braeview Park in May. Simon Holmes was back in the Beauly line-up. Beauly came out on top thanks to goals from Martin Davidson and Robbie Tuach. Ross Manson was on target for Kilmallie. Beauly will now be at home to Skye Camanachd in the semi-finals with the tie likely to take place on 11 August 2012.
Strathdearn Cup – Semi-Final Fort William 2 Glenurquhart 0 Fort William won through to the Strathdearn Cup Final with a 2-0 win over Glenurquhart at the Black Parks. These sides were the beaten semi-finalists in the Sutherland Cup but the Fort will go at least a stage further in this competition. The Glen were without Drew MacLennan as he is recovering from a nasty accidental facial knock picked up against Kinlochshiel last weekend. Both goals came in the first half and Graham Campbell put the home side ahead after 10 minutes. Teenage striker Jack Fraser made it 2-0 on 34 minutes to earn the Fort a final spot.
Bullough Cup – Quarter Finals Lochside Rovers 9 Inveraray 0 Lochside Rovers powered past Inveraray with a 9-0 win in their noon throw up at Ganavan, Oban. The sides have already met twice in the league this season with table-toppers Lochside Rovers coming out on top in both occasions so they started as favourites. Gordon Watt was free of suspension for Inveraray. Brian MacCallum put Lochside Rovers ahead with the only goal of the first half on 32 minutes. Shaun Morgan made it 2-0 in 51 minutes whilst Brian MacCallum got his second a couple of minutes later to make it 3-0. Shaun Morgan got his second on 55 minutes and Brian MacCallum completed his hat-trick on 63 minutes. Daniel MacKinnon got his first of the afternoon on 71 minutes to make it 6-0 and put Lochside out of sight. Three goals in the final 5 minutes put a gloss on the scoreline. Daniel MacKinnon completed his hat-trick with goals on 85 and 89 minutes, either side of an 87 minute Keith Burnett effort. Inveraray’s Robert Munro’s was red carded by referee Robert Baxter. Bute 0 Ballachulish 3 The tie between Bute and Ballachulish was a noon throw up at the Meadows. Late goals from Ally Carmichael and Gordon MacMillan cancelled out Garry Young’s opener to give Bute a 2-1 win in the side’s league meeting on Rothesay earlier in the season. Ballachulish gained revenge this time as Darren Sutherland scored twice and Duncan MacDonald got the other in a 3-0 victory.
Orion Group Premiership Bute 1 Glenurquhart 4 Doubles from Neale Reid and David Smart cancelled out John Beattie’s earlier opener for Bute to give Glenurquhart a 4-1 win against at the Meadows. The home side were minus Scotland international defender Iain MacDonald, who after recovering from a hamstring injury, broke his toe in an accident at work. John Beattie delighted the home support when he fired them into a 6 minute lead. However Neale Reid beat Kevin Queen in the Bute goal on 21 minutes to square the game at half-time. The second half belonged to the Glen and David Smart signaled their intent when he put them in front for the first time in the match just 60 seconds after the restart. Neale Reid got his second on 69 minutes and David Smart’s second in the final minute clinched a 4-1 win which ensured both points went back up the road to Blairbeg. This was Bute’s eighth straight league defeat and they sit 5 points adrift at the bottom of the table.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Lochcarron 0 Caberfeidh 1 Lochcarron lost out by a single goal to Caberfeidh at Battery Park. Lochcarron survived a late onslaught to record a 2-1 win when the sides met at Castle Leod last month. However the Battery Park side, who now enter their final phase of six league fixtures having already played each side home and away, lost out this time. Graham MacGregor was available for Cabers before starting a two match suspension for a points accumulation. In the end the sides were only separated by a 5 minute Kevin Bartlett goal which was enough to give the visitors a 1-0 win. The victory takes Cabers back to the top of the table. Inverness 0 Beauly 5 All the goals came in the second half as Beauly beat Inverness 5-0 at the Bught Park, Inverness. The home side had Davie Glass free of suspension but Somhairle MacDonald was unavailable. Jack MacDonald and Jamie MacLennan returned from holiday for Beauly but Ryan Tillman was injured and Conor Ross was unavailable. Barrie MacDonald put Beauly ahead on 54 minutes and Jack MacDonald added a second 60 seconds later. Jack MacDonald got his second on 71 minutes to make it 3-0. The Inverness cause wasn’t helped when forward James Cameron was red-carded by referee Daniel MacRae for a late challenge on Beualy keeper MacKay Murray. Late goals from Jamie MacLennan on 88 minutes and David MacLean on the stroke of full time completed the 5-0 win.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Glenorchy 3 Aberdour 1 Second place Glenorchy beat bottom side Aberdour 3-1 in their 1.30pm throw up at Dalmally. The sides were due to meet in Fife on league duty last weekend but the match was scuppered because of an unplayable pitch. Alex MacPherson was free of suspension for Glenorchy. A John McNulty double and a John Surtain goal counted for Glenorchy with John MacLauchlan countering for the visitors. Glasgow Mid Argyll 5 Oban Celtic 1 Third place Glasgow Mid Argyll beat fourth place Oban Celtic 5-1 in their 1.30pm throw up at Yoker. GMA forward Mark Bain missed out after suffering a cut hand which required six stitches last weekend. A run of four straight victories have taken Oban Celtic right out of the relegation zone into the top half of the table. GMA got off to a great start as Fulton Ross scored after just 5 minutes and Andy Mathie added a second just 60 seconds later. Oban Celtic fought back though and Ally McKerracher’s 26 minute effort which cut GMA’s lead to 2-1 at half-time. Craig Anderson restored GMA’s two goal advantage a couple of minutes into the second half whilst Iain Forsyth’s goal on 58 minutes completed the 5-1 win which keeps the home side in the title race.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Glengarry 1 Newtonmore 5 Evan Menzies continued his scoring streak with a hat-trick as league leaders Newtonmore returned from Craigard with both points following a 5-1 win over Glengarry. Evan Menzies scored on 7 minutes to give the visitors an early advantage and he added his second on 20 minutes to make it 2-0. Drew MacDonald’s strike 5 minutes before half time gave ‘More a 3-0 lead at the break. Callum Stewart made it 4-0 a couple of minutes into the second half and although Glengarry’s Daniel MacLennan pulled a goal back two minutes later, Evan Menzies completed his hat-trick 5 minutes from time to seal a 5-1 win. Skye Camanachd 1 Kinlochshiel 3 Kinlochshiel were 3-1 winners in their local derby against Skye Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Click on the following link to read the match report in full Aberdeen University 4 Lovat 1 Aberdeen University ended Lovat’s winning run with a 4-1 win in the Granite City with former Skye Camanachd players Jamie Beaton and Kenny Macleod amongst the goals. The visitors had enjoyed successive league victories over Skye Camanachd and Lochaber but they fell just short in this one. Callum Edmonds put the Students ahead on 25 minutes and Jamie Beaton added a second just 5 minutes later. Bradley McHardy pulled a goal back for Lovat on 35 minutes and the home side remained 2-1 in front at the break. The outcome remained in the balance until Jamie Beaton’s second goal of the afternoon on 75 minutes and a late Kenny MacLeod strike a couple of minutes from time sealed a 4-1 home win. Lochaber P Kingussie P The match between Lochaber and Kingussie at Spean Bridge was postponed at Lochaber’s request because of a bereavement.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Ardnamurchan 5 Col Glen 2 David Wright scored twice as Ardnamurchan enjoyed a 5-2 home win over Col Glen. An Iain MacKellar goal gave Col Glen a 1-0 win when the sides met at Glendaruel in April but this was Ardnamurchan’s day. Ardnamurchan’s Liam Thornton was unavailable as he began a two match ban. As well as Wright’s double, Alan Nairn, Sandy Corrigan and David Robertson were also on target for the home side. Neil Black and Jamie MacVicar counted for the visitors. Aberdour 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Bottom side Aberdour had a morale boosting 4-3 win over Glasgow Mid Argyll in Fife. Calum McLay put GMA ahead on 35 minutes with the only goal of the first half. When Calum Forsyth added a second a couple of minutes into the second period, the points seemed destined for Glasgow. However Andy MacDonald pulled a goal back two minutes after and Lewis Nicol on 63 minutes, Chris Bowerman on 82 minutes and Ewan Shaw on 86 minutes put Aberdour 4-2 in front. Lewis Miller pulled a goal back from GMA a minute from time but Aberdour took the points. The win leaves Aberdour just one point behind GMA in the league with a game fewer played.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Lochbroom 6 Caberfeidh 4 Second place Lochbroom beat sixth place Caberfeidh 6-4 in a high scoring clash in Ullapool. Blair Morrison and Colin MacLennan hit doubles when Cabers won the corresponding fixture 4-2 in April. However Lochbroom have enjoyed a good league campaign so far with Lochcarron and Beauly the only other sides to have defeated them in the league this season. Lochbroom gained revenge for the earlier defeat as Neil Fraser continued his good scoring run when he netted four times with Lorne Hughes getting a double. Colin MacLennan, Ian MacDonald, Blair Morrison and Alan Ross all counted for Caberfeidh. Strathglass 2 Boleskine 5 Strathglass took on third place Boleskine at Cannich in what was the sides’ first meeting of the season. Boleskine’s Michael Pirie was suspended for this one. First team player / manager Robert Geddes scored twice for Strathglass but Lewis Smith, Craig Pirie, Ewen Fraser and an Iain Grant brace gave third place Boleskine the points with a 5-2 win.
Hebridean Celtic Festival - Cup Final Lewis Camanachd 2 Uist Camanachd 2 (Uist won 2-1 on penalties) Uist Camanachd won the sixth Hebridean Celtic Festival Cup with a penalty shoot-out triumph over Lewis Camanachd in their 2pm throw up at Bayhead Pitches. This keenly-contested match between the two Hebridean clubs has become a traditional part of the HebCelt Festival’s Saturday events. Lewis were missing former Skye Camanachd duo Eoghan Stewart and Stuart Campbell. Uist included Douglas MacKenzie from Lochcarron and Hamish Myers from Strathglass. Fazel Froughi twice put Uist ahead, with Lewis equalising on each occasion. The second leveler came from the penalty spot, late in the game. It eventually took a penalty shoot-out to separate the sides. Lee Thompson and Douglas MacKenzie put Uist 2-1 in front and when Ewen Campbell saved Lewis Camanachd’s final spot-hit, the Uist players started their celebrations. Lewis Camanachd won the competition in 2011 and Uist’s victory is their first since 2009. |
