29 July 2012 It was a great day for Newtonmore as their first team made it through to the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup semi-finals and their second team won the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final following the shinty fixtures on Saturday 28 July 2012.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final Kingussie 4 Newtonmore 5 Newtonmore won the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final following a thrilling 5-4 victory over Kingussie at the Dell. There was a minutes silence before throw up to remember Belle Ross, wife of Iain Ross and mother to Ronald Ross and Iain Ross, who passed away earlier in the week. Iain Ross and his sons were present at the game. Favourites Newtonmore flew off the blocks and Calum Stewart gave them an 8 minutes lead. Two goals in two minutes from Evan Menzies on 20 and 21 minutes made it 3-0 and ‘More looked out of sight. Bob MacGregor pulled a goal back for Kingussie on 36 minutes but Calum Stewart’s second goal of the game a minute later restored Newtonmore’s three goal advantage and they took their 4-1 lead into the break. A Savio Genini strike on 59 minutes reduced ‘More’s advantage and when Michael Clark fired home on 72 minutes, ‘More led by just a single goal. Evan Menzies completed his hat-trick with a great solo goal on 83 minutes but a fine John Gibson strike a couple of minutes later made it 5-4. Kingussie pressed hard in the closing stages and they came close to taking the game into extra-time but Newtonmore held on and captain and hat-trick hero Evan Menzies lifted the famous trophy.
Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup – Quarter-Finals Newtonmore 1 Lochaber 0 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup holders Newtonmore are through to the semi-finals following a single goal win over Marine Harvest North Division 1 side Lochaber at the Eilan. There was also a minutes silence at the start of this tie to remember Belle Ross. The sides met in the Co-operative MacTavish Cup Final where ‘More ran out 5-1 winners at the Bught Park. However Lochaber are a better team for that experience and this noon throw up was a much closer affair. In the end a Fraser MacKintosh strike on 59 minutes was all that separated the sides and Newtonmore go on to play Kyles Athletic at Mossfield in the semi-finals on Saturday 11 August 2012.
Orion Group Premiership Inveraray 4 Lovat 1 Title challengers Lovat knew they would be put to the test when they travelled to the Winterton to play Inveraray. Russell MacKinlay and Greg Matheson exchanged first half goals to leave the sides level at half time. MacKinlay got his second 5 minutes into the second half and late goals from Garry MacPherson and Neil Campbell gave Inveraray a 4-1 win. Kyles Athletic 6 Glenurquhart 3 Three goals in the last 19 minutes gave Kyles Athletic two valuable points and a 6-3 win over Glenurquhart at the Winterton. Ewen Campbell, David Zavaroni and Roddy MacDonald were all on target within the first 11 minutes to give the home side a 3-0 lead. However James MacPherson netted a first half hat-trick to make it 3-3 at the break. And that’s the way it remained until 71 minutes when Robbie MacLeod put Inveraray back in front. A late Fraser MacDonald double sealed the 6-3 win. Bute 1 Fort William 1 Bute and Fort William drew 1-1 at the Meadows. Both goals came late in the game with Robert Ferguson putting Bute ahead after 70 minutes and Alan Knox levelling 10 minutes later.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Skye Camanachd 1 Caberfeidh 1 League leaders Skye Camanachd drew 1-1 with second place Caberfeidh at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Craig Morrison put the visitors ahead after 8 minutes only for Iain Nicolson to level a couple of minutes later. Strathglass 2 Inverness 3 A last minute Davie Glass goal gave Inverness a 3-2 win over Strathglass at Cannich. Robert Geddes gave the home side an opening minute lead. However former Strathglass player Scott Douglass drew Inverness level on 15 minutes. Davie Glass put the visitors in front on 35 minutes but a 70 minute Mark MacLeod goal looked to have won Strathglass a share of the points until the later winner from Glass.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Strachur 2 Oban Camanachd 3 It took a Lorne Dickie goal 8 minutes from time to give Oban Camanachd a 3-2 win over Strachur at the Strachurmore Sports Centre. Rhys Campbell and Steven Bulloch counted for Strachur whilst Aidan MacIntyre and Iain MacMillan got the other Oban goals. Glenorchy 1 Taynuilt 2 Taynuilt beat Glenorchy 2-1 at Mart Park, Dalmally. Lorne Browne scored for the home side but strikes from Willie Neilson and Michael MacQueen won it for the visitors. Glasgow Mid Argyll 7 Kilmory 0 A Craig Anderson hat-trick and two from Andy Mathie helped Glasgow Mid Argyll to a 7-0 win over Kilmory at Yoker.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Fort William 1 Glenurquhart 3 Second half goals from Calum Fraser, Jack Hosie and Iain MacLeod cancelled out Mark Fraser’s first half opener to give Glenurquhart a 3-1 win over Fort William at the Black Parks. Skye Camanachd 4 Aberdeen University 3 A Jordan Murchison hat-trick helped Skye Camanachd to a fortunate 4-3 win over Aberdeen University at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Lovat 2 Glengarry 5 Arran Clark grabbed a hat-trick as Glengarry beat Lovat 5-2 at Balgate.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Aberdour 2 Lochside Rovers 9 Aberdour went down 9-2 to league leaders Lochside Rovers in Fife. Daniel MacKinnon got four goals and Brian MacCallum bagged a hat-trick. Lochside Rovers goal difference is such that they have all but won the title. Col Glen 2 Ballachulish 2 Col Glen and Ballachulish shared the points following a 2-2 draw. David MacPhee scored a goal in each half for the visitors whilst Col Glen benefited from a Kieran Limbert goal and a Grant Symmers own goal. Bute W/O v Ardnamurchan Ardnamurchan were unable to raise a team for their trip to the Meadows to play Bute so the points went to the home side. Kyles Athletic W/O v Glasgow Mid Argyll Glasgow Mid Argyll were unable to raise a team for their trip to Tighnabruaich to play Kyles Athletic so the points went to the home side. Tayforth W/O v Inveraray Inveraray were unable to raise a team for their match at Tayforth so the points went to the home side.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Strathglass 0 Beauly 4 Strathglass and Beauly brought forward their Cannich meeting to Friday 27 July 2012. Martin Davidson, a Sean Stewart double and a Connor Ross goal gave Beauly a 4-0 win which puts them another step closer to the title. Lewis Camanachd 0 Boleskine 5 Lewis Camanachd played their final home match of the season against Boleskine at Shawbost. A second half Lewis Smith hat-trick contributed to Boleskine’s 5-0 win. Strathspey Camanachd 2 Lochcarron 3 Andrew Slaughter scored three times as Lochcarron beat Strathspey Camanachd 3-2 at Freuchie. Alan Stewart and a last minute David Noble penalty counted for Strathspey. Caberfeidh 1 Kilmallie 4 Caberfeidh went down 4-1 to Kilmallie at Castle Leod. Seb MacMillan gave Kilmallie a 6 minute lead from the penalty spot and Mark Graham made it 2-0 on 58 minutes. Caberfeidh’s Ruairidh McCreadie pulled a goal back on 64 minutes but goals from Robbie MacFadyen and Andrew MacMaster gave Kilmallie both points from a 4-1 win. |
