Skye Camanachd 4 Lochside 0 | |
19 February 2012 The Skye Camanachd second team recorded an impressive 4-0 win over Lochside Rovers at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 18 February 2012. Skye captain David Grant missed out as he was on holiday. Jamie MacDonald was also due to play but was unable to make it back in time and Mark Mortimer was a late call-off. This was a tough test for the Islanders against a Lochside Rovers side which finished third in Marine Harvest South Division 1 last season and who are also Bullough Cup holders. With Oban Camanachd’s friendly against Strathglass called off, Lochside boss Tony Howlett was able to call on Scotland international Daniel Cameron and senior players Daniel MacIntyre and Matt Rippon although Rippon started on the bench. The conditions were good, if a little cold, to start with and there was little sign of the snow forecast for the west Highlands. Lochside Rovers started with the wind at their backs and both sides went close early in the game. Skye almost took the lead when an Alan Palmer shot flashed across the face of Robert Dunning’s goal. The Skye defence had to be at their best to deny the Lochside forwards with Ally MacDonald and debutant Ally “Duntulm” MacLeod shining for the Islanders. The Lochside attack included 14 year old Conner Howe who is also a promising footballer on Dumbarton’s books. The opening goal arrived on 21 minutes and it came for the home side. Skye won possession thanks to good battling from John Angus MacInnes and he played the ball to Danny Morrison who needed little invitation before rifling it into the net. There was a midfield scuffle involving Skye’s Allan Mackinnon and Lochside Rovers’ Matt Rippon on 36 minutes. Both players left the field to be replaced with substitutes at the start of the second half. Skye played with the wind at the start of the second period and they took initiative from the throw up with Danny Morrison grabbing his second on 48 minutes to make it 2-0. Substitute Iain MacLellan made it 3-0 on 52 minutes and Skye looked in control. A low 20 yard Paul MacKinnon shot on 56 minutes deceived visiting keeper Dunning to give Skye a 4-0 lead. The conditions started to worsen with a snow blitz engulfing the pitch. The decisive moment came on the hour mark when the rising wind blew down the Viewfield Road end set of goals. With poor visibility and no sign of the conditions improving, referee Donnie Martin took the wise decision to end the game early.
