Skye Camanachd 1 Newtonmore 0 | |
05 September 2012 The Skye Camanachd second team rounded off their season with a 1-0 win over Marine Harvest North Division 2 league champions Newtonmore at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 1 September 2012. Skye manager Murdo Morrison named a 15 man squad for this 1pm throw up. Work commitments meant Morrison is unable to attend the match so Donnie Martin took charge of the team. There were seven changes from the squad which beat Lochaber the previous weekend. Stevie MacKinnon, John MacKenzie, Andrew Grant, Iain MacLellan, Angie MacPherson, Iain MacPherson and Davie MacVicar all dropped out of the squad. However David MacInnes, Ally “Spod” MacLeod, Iain MacLeod, Will Cowie, Iain Nicolson and John Angus MacInnes, were all included and they started with U14 captain Stephen Murchison added to the substitute’s bench. Newtonmore were also without several of their title winning squad including keeper Sean MacQuarrie and captain Evan Menzies. U17 keeper John MacLeod started in goal and Neil Stewart was also included as he continues his recovery from a knee injury. 2011 first team captain Scott Campbell started in attach as did David Campbell. Newtonmore opened with a strong wind at their backs and although it was wet, conditions were to get much worse before the 90 minutes were up. The visitors enjoyed the early pressure but it was Skye who took the lead when Chris MacLennan and David Grant combined and Skye full forward planted the ball in the corner of the net. Newtonmore immediately returned on the offensive and the Skye defence, with Andrew Banks and David MacInnes putting in strong performances, worked hard to take the team’s lead into the break. Skye enjoyed more of the second half pressure with the wind at their backs. However there was no further scoring and conditions during the final 10 minutes of the came deteriorated to such an extent that referee Neil Ferguson considered abandoning the match. Newtonmore were unfortunate not to take something from the game but David Grant’s fine strike and a good defensive performance won Skye the points. The Islanders go second in the table but they can be over-taken by Kinlochshiel if they beat Fort William at An Aird in their last match this coming weekend.
