Skye Camanachd 1 Beauly 0 | |
02 October 2012 Skye Camanachd beat Beauly 1-0 in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 29 September 2012. Skye Camanachd first team manager Willie MacRae named a 15 man squad for the 1pm throw up and he made five changes from the 14 man pool which lost to Lochaber the previous weekend. Jamie Gannon, Shaun Hedley, Ally MacDonald and Aonghas MacDonald all returned to the starting line-up after missing the Spean Bridge trip. Stewart Grant and also came back and he started on the bench. Ross Graham, Will Cowie, Chris MacLennan and the suspended Jamie MacDonald all dropped out of the squad whilst Jordan Murchison, Gilleasbuig Macdonald, John Moir and Iain Morrison remained on the Skye Camanachd injury list. Connor Cormack had been a major doubt for the visitors after sustaining an ankle knock in last weekend’s 3-2 win over Inverness but he was passed fit to play. The visitors were other-wise along usual lines. The match started at a frantic pace and an unorthodox effort from Aonghas MacDonald, when he flicked the ball between his legs with his back to goal, almost caught out the Beauly defence. Beauly keeper MacKay Murray made a double save from Aonghas MacDonald after 15 minutes. Beauly also had their share of the game and a dangerous Barrie MacDonald shot flew wide of target on 23 minutes. Ally “Spod” MacLeod collected the ball in space and on 27 minutes and his shot dipped just a couple of inches over the bar with Murray beaten. Jack MacDonald got away from his marker a minute later but Jamie Gannon came off his line to clear the ball away for a corner. Skye took the lead on the half hour mark. Darryl Macintosh hit a good shy from the right, mid-way inside the Beauly half, and the ball dropped to Danny Morrison who made space before sending a great shot into the top corner of the net to make it 1-0. MacKay Murray made a good save above his head to deny Ally “Spod” MacLeod just 5 minutes later. Beauly created their best chance of the half on 39 minutes when Barrie MacDonald beat his man and crossed to the back post where he found Jack MacDonald. However a last-gasp Steven Morrison challenge saved what seemed like a certain goal. The second half was just a couple of minutes old when Ally “Spod” MacLeod sent a great 25 yard shot which MacKay Murray palmed away for a corner. Beauly’s Marc MacLauchlan collected the ball from a free-hit on 53 minutes and his effort went just wide of target. Skye had a real let-off on 61 minutes when a Barrie MacDonald shot from the left came off the inside of the Skye post and was cleared for a corner by keeper Jamie Gannon. MacDonald claimed that the ball had crossed the line but goal judge Brian Davis was on hand to provide judgment and the Beauly man was booked for his complaints. Skye manager Willie MacRae made a double change as John Angus MacInnes replaced the limping Ally “Spod” Macleod and Stewart Grant came on for Steven Morrison who had taken a blow to the wrist when clearing the ball out of defence. David Grant went to full back, Shaun Hedley dropped into defence and Stewart Grant took over Hedley’s wing centre role. Skye’s David Grant had his name taken for disputing a decision by referee Graham Cameron as Beauly continued to press. A mazy run from Marc MacLaughlan on 77 minutes caused the Skye defence problems but they eventually scrambled the ball away. Beauly took player / manager Stephen MacLean on for Jack MacDonald with 10 minutes remaining. Skye boss Willie MacRae made his final change on 85 minutes when Magnus Burd replaced Ally MacDonald. Skye looked the more dangerous in the closing stages of the game and a bouncing shot from Danny Morrison was saved by MacKay Murray who then cleared the ball for a corner. Conor Cormack showed no ill-effects from his ankle knock and he was a stand-out for the visitors. Keeper Mackay Murray also contributed with some good saves. Skye absorbed a fair bit of pressure during the game but another clean sheet and a great defensive display from Steven Morrison, David Grant, Shockie MacLennan and Neil MacVicar, coupled with Danny Morrison’s exquisite finish, won the Islanders the points.
