12 February 2012 There were a number of pre-season shinty friendlies on Saturday 11 February 2012. 2011 Scottish Hydro Premier Division and Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup winners Newtonmore made their first appearance of the pre-season when they beat Skye Camanachd 4-0 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree to win the George Michie Memorial Cup. The first half was goalless with Skye twice coming close in the early stages through Gilleasbuig MacDonald. Some good goalkeeping from Skye keeper Aonghas MacDonald kept 'More at bay until Glen MacKintosh struck on 52 minutes when he slipped home a Blair MacKintosh cross. 'More captain John MacKenzie made it 2-0 on 68 minutes with a blistering drive before a trademark Danny MacRae double in the last 5 minutes sealed the win. Glenurquhart's new management team of Fraser MacKenzie and Drew McNeil were left happy as their team made a winning start when their side retained the MacDonald Cup with a 5-0 win over Strathglass at Cannich. Neale Reid got opener and Andrew Corrigan added a second. John Barr got made it 3-0 whilst Ruaridh Cameron netted a fourth early in the second half. Lewis MacLennan rounded off the 5-0 win on a soft Cannich pitch. It was double success for the Glen as their second team retained the Ali Ban Cup as holders following a 0-0 draw against Strathglass in the early game ay Cannich. Russell Jones made a winning start to his tenure in charge at Kingussie as his side beat Caberfiedh 6-0 at the Dell. With Ronald Ross attending a coaching course in Glasgow, Lee Bain was pushed into attack and he responded with a hat-trick. Martin Dallas bagged a double and Craig Dawson got the other. Kinlochshiel beat Lochcarron 3-1 in their west coast derby at Battery Park. Finlay MacRae, Gordie MacDonald and Duncan "Ach" Macrae got their goals whilst Ian MacKenzie countered for Lochcarron. The Lovat and Lochaber first teams drew 1-1 at Balgate. Shaun Nicolson put Lochaber ahead after 13 minutes but Greg Matheson squared the game with a strike 3 minutes into the second half. Fort William were not in action with several of their player off to Manchester for first team player Neil Robertson's stag party. Oban Celtic won the Robert Wylie Memorial Cup when they beat holders Inverness after a sudden death penalty shoot-out at Mossfield, Oban. Goals from Lee Askew and David Hill had Oban Celtic leading 2-1 before Inverness levelled late in the game. The teams were level after the regulation penalty shoot-out and David Hill held his nerve to score the all-important sudden death goal. Strathspey Camanachd gave a good account of themselves before going down 4-0 to Kingussie at Kincraig. Savio Genini, Michael Clark and Lewis Falconer were amongst the Kings scorers with all the goals coming in a 5 minutes burst. The victory gave new Kingussie second team boss Michael Falconer a winning start. The Aberdour first team were beaten 3-1 by the Newtonmore second team.
The Aberdour second string drew 1-1 with Aberdeen University.
The Col-Glen and Bute reserve sides drew 2-2 draw at Glendaruel. Arran Dunn put Bute ahead but Euan Morley to level the game. Bute captain Neil McKirdy put the Islanders ahead for the second time but a late Euan Morley strike, his second of the game, earned Col Glen a draw. The Plockton tournament between Glengarry, Kinlochshiel, Lochcarron and Skye Camanachd did not go ahead and the match between Beauly and Kilmallie was called off because of a bereavement.
