21 May 2012 Portree Primary School went down 4-1 to Kingussie Primary School in their 2012 MacKay Cup North Final at Blairbeg on Monday 21 May 2012. Portree got off to the worst possible start when, straight from the throw up, Kingussie full forward Roddy Young dribbled through the Islanders’ defence before slotting the ball into the net to put the MacKay Cup holders 1-0 up. However Portree settled and they squared the tie on 5 minutes when Gregor Christie collected the ball and fired low into the net to make it 1-1. Portree keeper Murphy Henderson made two fine saves with his feet to stop the Kings regaining the lead. At the other end, Portree almost went in front when a fantastic Stewart Taylor shot rose over the bar. Portree keeper Murphy Henderson was then back in action as he palmed away a good Dylan Borthwick effort from distance as the game swung from end to end. Kingussie took the lead on 22 minutes with the goal of the match. Roddy Young collected the ball with his back to goal, before turning and crashing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-1. Portree fought back and on 25 minutes, an Angie MacDonald snap-shop was deflected wide for a corner. Kingussie extended their lead on 28 minutes. There seemed little danger when Roddy Young collected the ball on the left but he turned and sent a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner of Murphy Henderson’s net. Kingussie took this lead into the break but they found Portree in determined mood from the restart and Kingussie keeper Mark Watters saved well from Gregor Christie. Another Portree shot whistled past the post 9 minutes into the second half as the Islanders looked to narrow the deficit. Kingussie almost extended their lead a couple of minutes later when Roddy Young collected a Ruairidh Anderson pass and shot into the side-netting from a tight angle on the Kingussie right. Young then hit the side-netting on the other side of the Portree goal seconds later. Portree Keeper Murphy Henderson saved a Dylan Borthwick shot from distance mid-way through the second half. Portree had a goal disallowed 19 minutes into the second half. Gregor Christie got on the end of a cross from the right and he stretched to knock the ball down into the net but his effort was ruled out by referee Robert Morrison. Kingussie came back on the attack as first Roddy Young shot past and then Murphy Henderson saved another strike with his feet. Kingussie put the tie beyond doubt 3 minutes from time when man of the match Roddy Young got on the end of a through ball and rounded keeper Henderson before rolling the ball into the net to give his side a deserved win. Best for Portree were keeper Murphy Henderson, Connor Gilpin and Mark MacQueen in defence as well as Ross Nicolson. Kingussie’s strength lay down the middle of the park with full back Kieran MacPherson and Alexander Michie, who was man of the match in last year’s final, commanding in defence. Dylan Borthwick was effective in midfield and Ruairidh Anderson and four goal Roddy Young were always a threat up front. Kingussie now await the winners of the MacKay Cup South Final clash between Banavie and Rockfield which takes place on Wednesday 23 May 2012. The 2012 MacKay Cup Final will be in Oban on Saturday 26 May 2012. Portree Primary School from; (to follow) Kingussie Primary School from; (to follow) Referee – Robert Morrison |
