Skye Camanachd’s Neil MacVicar enjoyed his role at full forward as his team beat Caberfeidh 5-2 in their Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup first round tie at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Saturday 5 May 2012.
MacVicar is a regular in the Skye defence but a foot injury saw him deployed in attack. Speaking on Cuillin FM’s Camanachd Corner after the game, MacVicar compared the two roles. “Well it’s a lot more enjoyable playing up front,” he said. “You get a lot less lumps knocked out of you when you are playing up front.”
MacVicar had been a major injury doubt ahead of the game. “I wasn’t sure if my toe was broken or not and although it’s bruising, I was advised not to play. So I started up front and the boost I got from the first goal kept me going. It’s not feeling too great just now but I’m sure it will be fine for next week.”
MacVicar did miss out on one prize though. “It would have been nice to get a third goal and Ross Cowie promised me a bottle of champagne if I got a hat-trick so I’m a bit disappointed that I missed out on that.”
He is in no doubt as to which role he prefers. “I started off playing up front and I’d like to stay there so I’ll just have to convince Willie to keep me there.”
