Macaulay Cup Damage | |
21 August 2012 Glenurquhart Shinty Club and the Macaulay Association have both issued statements following damage caused to the Macaulay Cup in the aftermath of Glenurquhart’s 6-0 win over Oban Camanachd in the Artemis Macaulay Cup Final at Mossfield on Saturday 18 August 2012. Pictures of the damaged cup were published on social media sites following the victory which was Glenurquhart’s first major senior success in their 127 year history. The Macaulay Association issued a media statement which read, “The Macaulay Association wish to express their profound disappointment at the extensive damage caused to the Macaulay Cup within 36 hours of being presented at Saturday`s Macaulay Cup Final. To compound the problem, the Macaulay Association only became aware of the damage as a result of postings of photographs on a social networking site which did little for the reputation of the persons responsible. The Macaulay Cup had recently undergone a total refurbishment at considerable cost and was in excellent condition when presented on Saturday. The Macaulay Association acknowledge communications from Glen Urquhart Camanachd where the Drumnadrochit club have accepted full responsibility for this regrettable incident and have indicated they will recompense the Macaulay Association fully for all expense incurred in required repairs. The Macaulay Association will now review procedures pertaining to custody of the trophy by future winning teams and will not tolerate their trophy being abused in a manner which unfortunately seems to be acceptable in some quarters.” Glenurquhart Shinty Club also issued a statement expressing their regret over what had happened and the Blairbeg club has also issued a letter of apology to the Macaulay Association. The club statement read, “This incident is deeply regrettable and we have written a formal letter of apology to The Macaulay Association and will of course cover any costs incurred in the repair of the trophy. We do not wish for this incident to over shadow what was a wonderful achievement in winning our clubs first national senior trophy in our 127 year history.” The Macaulay Cup was donated by Flora Ann Macaulay in 1947. She was the daughter of the then Oban Times owner Duncan Cameron senior who took over the paper following the death of founder James Miller. Flora Ann Macaulay was editor of the Oban Times and was actively involved in the management of the paper until her death – aged 99 years. The tournament is sponsored currently by Artemis who announced a three year extension to their sponsorship deal following the weekend final. |
