Scotland came out on top in the Women’s Shinty / Camogie International against Clare at the Father McNamara Camogie Field, Doora, County Clare on Saturday 27 October 2012.
This match took place ahead of the senior Shinty / Hurling international between Ireland and Scotland at Cusack Park and throw-in was brought forward to 10.45am. The game was 15-a-side and was played for 30 minutes each way.
The Scots were co-managed by Sarah Corrigall and Laura MacKay whilst Clare named 22 players for the occasion, one from each of the county's camogie clubs.
Scotland went in front after just 2 minutes when Badenoch & Strathspey’s Janette MacGregor put a free over the bar to make it (0-0) 0-2 (0-2).
The Scots went further ahead with a 6 minute goal which added another three points and made it (0-0) 0-5 (1-2).
Scotland captain Katie Drain from Glasgow Mid Argyll put a free between the posts to increase Scotland’s lead to (0-0) 0-7 (1-2) and the visitors took this advantage into the half-time break.
Just a couple of minutes into the second half, Laura Gallacher, who plays shinty for the Glengarry Ladies and Lovat men’s team, scored her side’s second goal to make it (0-0) 0-10 (2-2).
Scotland continued to dominate and they went on to increase their lead to (0-0) 0-21 (5-6). As well as Laura Gallacher, the other goals came from a brace from Badenoch & Strathspey’ Jane Nicol, Katie Drain and a goal on her Scotland senior debut from Skye Camanachd’s Lorna MacRae. Aberdour’s Niamh Donnelly also chipped in with a point.
Clare, who were captained by Aida Griffey from County champions Kilmaley, made a late push and they were rewarded in the dying minutes when two AnneMarie Fitzgerald frees were followed by a Teresa Roseingrave goal to make the final score (1-2) 5-21 (5-6).
Griffey, who plays with the county champions Kilmaley, is one of the 22 players selected for the occasion, one from each of the county's Camogie clubs.
The match also marked the official opening of Fr. McNamara Park in Doora, with the new home for Clare Camogie officially opened at half time by President Michael D Higgins.
