Behaviour in Sport Committee To Rule On Newtonmore Ineligible Player Issue | |
04 August 2012 The Camanachd Association has announced that it's Behaviour in Sport Committee will rule on whether Newtonmore fielded an ineligible player in their Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final win over Kingussie at the Dell on Saturday 28 July 2012. The Camanachd Association statement read, "following an investigation, and in compliance with the current Disciplinary Procedures, a meeting of the Camanachd Association Behaviour in Sport Committee will be convened at the earliest opportunity to consider a case of alleged Misconduct in relation to the fielding of an ineligible player by Newtonmore Camanachd Club in the 2012 Sutherland Cup semi-final and in the final." The Camanachd Association player pool rules state that, “a player is ineligible to play in the Sir William Sutherland Cup if he has played five or more first team matches. A player under the age of 17 on 1 January of the year of competition will be exempt from the rule.” It is understood that Newtonmore’s Calum Stewart has played for the club’s first team on eight occasions, yet he played from the start in the final and scored two goals in Newtonmore’s 5-4 win. It is believed that Stewart’s inclusion was an honest mistake by Newtonmore who believed that the “age 17 rule” was in fact for under 18 year olds which would have made 17 year old Stewart eligible to play. However the consequences of such an error could be serious for Newtonmore. The error also puts into question whether Stewart was eligible to play in Newtonmore’s 4-1 semi-final win over Glenurquhart when Stewart also scored twice and the Behaviour in Sport Committee will rule on this too. |
