Inverness 1 Newtonmore 7 New Inverness boss Drew McNeil had a tough opener against a strong Newtonmore side at the Bught Park. ‘More ran out 7-1 winners but the general consensus was that it was a much improved, battling performance from Inverness. Innes Simpson returned for the home side after an absence of over a year. There were also places for Davie Glass following a couple of years with Kinlochshiel and former Skye Camanachd player Somhairle MacDonald. A major bonus for Newtonmore was a return to the shinty field for Scotland U21 captain Rory Kennedy after over a year out with a hand injury. Fraser MacKintosh, Evan Menzies, Chris Sellar, Rory Kennedy and a Calum Stewart hat-trick all counted for Newtonmore. Skye Camanachd 1 Lovat 1 (Skye won 3-2 on penalties) Skye Camanachd lifted the George Michie Memorial Cup for the first time since 2011 when they edged out Lovat on penalties in their meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. This was a good, competitive encounter and Skye came closest to breaking the deadlock when a rasping Jordan Murchison shot came back off the crossbar. Lovat went in front on 26 minutes when Skye keeper Iain MacLeod saved an attempt on goal but he was unable to get the ball away and Greg Matheson nipped in to flick the ball into the net. MacLeod then made a terrific save above his head from a Lorne MacKay drive whilst at the other end; Stuart MacDonald palmed away a high Jordan Murchison ball from wide of the left. Late in the first half, Lovat survived a scramble in their goal area whilst Skye defender Ally MacDonald made a timely intervention as Lovat threatened to extend their lead. Skye levelled 3 minutes after the restart when Kenny Campbell broke forward on the right and his bouncing shot deceived Stuart MacDonald and ended up in the net. Both sides introduced a number of substitutes and Stuart MacDonald had to stretch to tip a Jordan Murchison drive from the left over the bar. With 9 minutes remaining, Lovat cut open the Skye defence following a corner on the right and just when Greg Matheson looked sure to score, Ally “Spod” MacLeod darted in to sweep the ball off the goal line. Referee John Angus Gillies’ final whistle signalled a penalty shoot-out. Conversations from Will Cowie, Steven Morrison, Kevin Bartlett and Jamie Matheson had the outcome level after the first eight penalties so the match effectively went to sudden death. David Grant stepped up to score for Skye whilst Islanders’ goalie Iain MacLeod dived to his right to keep out Calum Cruden’s effort so Skye took the honours. Young Caitlin MacDonald, George Michie’s niece, presented the George Michie Memorial Cup to Skye Camanachd captain Gilleasbuig MacDonald.
