The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 6 April 2019 | |
08 April 2019 The cottages.com quarter-finalists are known, Lovat stay top of the Mowi Premiership and Fort William remain top of the Mowi National Division following the shinty action on Saturday 6 April 2019.
Mowi Premiership Kingussie 2 Oban Camanachd 0 Kingussie scored twice late in the game to beat Oban Camanachd 2-0 at the Dell. Kingussie manager John Gibson was unavailable so his assistant Ali MacLeod took the side. The Kings went into the match behind league leaders Lovat only on goal difference. Keeper Craig Dawson was still out injured so Rory MacGregor continued in goal whilst Lee Bain started on the bench. Oban Camanachd’s Daniel Cameron served a one match ban for passing through the disciplinary points threshold whilst boss Stephen Sloss was also without Scott MacKillop, Andrew MacCuish, Chrissie MacMillan and Keith MacMillan who were all unavailable. Gary McKerracher came into the side at full back and he played as if he’d never been away. Youngsters Ross Campbell and Lennon Campbell were Oban Camanachd’s only substitutes. Daniel MacVicar sent a chance high and wide in the first half whilst, at the other end, Cameron Sutherland, who was the busier of the two keepers, made a great save; tipping a Ruaridh Anderson shot that was heading for the top corner over the bar. Oban Camanachd swapped Connor Howe for Ross Campbell at the interval. Cameron Sutherland was called into action again before the hour when he made a point black save whilst one-on-one with Ruaridh Anderson. Sutherland then used his body to block a Savio Genini effort shortly after. Aidan MacIntyre went on a fantastic run after winning possession in the middle of the park where he got away from his marker. MacIntyre moved the ball to his right when he got sight of goal but Rory MacGregor made a terrific save from MacIntyre’s blistering shot. Daniel MacVicar then broke through and faced full back Robert Mabon but he failed to pick out Daniel Madej who was in space and the chance was gone. Scott MacMillan made a diagonal run to get on the end of a high ball from Ross Campbell which deceived the home defence but he shot into the side-netting. The first goal was always going to be massive and it was Kingussie who took the lead with just 8 minutes remaining. The Oban defence had been solid but there was only so much pressure they could take as Rory MacKeachan played the ball down the right and Roddy Young controlled the ball before finding Savio Genini on the penalty spot. Keeper Cameron Sutherland dived to his right to parry Genini’s shot, which may well have been going just wide, but Ruaridh Anderson ran in on the left to gleefully knock the rebound into the net. Oban Camanachd went for broke and they pushed Daniel Sloss, who had played well in defence, into the forward line. However it was Kingussie who sealed the win with the last hit of the game. Savio Genini played on Ruaridh Anderson’s low corner from the right and, with Roddy Young battling for possession in a central position, Savio Genini nipped in to whip the ball low into the net on his back-hand. The main difference between the sides was that Oban Camanachd didn’t work keeper Rory MacGregor anywhere near enough when they had possession in front of goal. Kingussie, on the other hand, forced a number of fine saves from Cameron Sutherland before keeping their scoring run going as they eventually found the net on two occasions.
Lochaber 1 Lovat 6 Lovat stay top of the league following their convincing 6-1 victory against Lochaber at Spean Bridge. Lochaber were without Martin Johnstone whilst Stuart Callison started at wing back where he played very well. Shaun Nicolson was at centre with Ben Delaney at buckshee forward although they swapped roles later in the game. Lovat pair Lewis Tawse and Calum MacAulay came into the side with Martin Mainland and Graeme MacMillan dropping onto the bench. The pitch was in reasonable condition considering the recent weather and it was a glorious day for a game of shinty. This match was all about the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes. Lovat, who fell a goal behind to Kinlochshiel in the opening minute the previous week, were the ones who got the early goal this time around. The ball came to Marc MacLachlan who beat his opponent and flicked the ball by keeper Calum MacDonald to make it 1-0 with just 15 seconds gone. On 5 minutes, Lewis Tawse came deep on the right where he gathered the ball and ran some distance before passing to Marc MacLachlan. The ball then came back to Tawse who lashed it into the back of the net to make it 2-0. Just 3 minutes later, Lewis Tawse played the ball in from wide on the left and Fraser Heath shot into the net but the goal judge ruled the effort out for offside. Lovat continued to attack and they added a third on 14 minutes. Lewis Tawse found Calum MacAulay who played the ball on to Marc MacLachlan and his cross from the left was turned low into the net by Greg Matheson and Lochaber now faced an uphill task. Lovat’s Duncan Davidson had been instrumental during the first 15 minutes but the match fell away after that with Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald’s only action involving playing a ball out for a corner. Lewis Tawse almost got a second on 54 minutes when he turned a Marc MacLachlan cross goalwards but his effort came off the post with the keeper beaten. Injury had restricted Lochaber defender Brennan MacDonald to a place on the bench but he joined the attack on the hour. Stuart MacDonald did well to save a rising Ben Delaney shot with his club. Then, with 16 minutes remaining, Lovat added a fourth. Marc MacLachlan came out on top following a tackle left of centre and, as he was being closed down, he drew the ball to the side and fired past an unsighted keeper. Lovat’s Lorne MacKay won the ball in the middle of the park and burst forward down the right before picking out Greg Matheson who trapped the ball and dispatched it into the net in one movement to make it 5-0 with 5 minutes to go. A couple of minutes later, a cross from the right came to Fraser Heath at the edge of the box. Heath showed good awareness as he played an unselfish reverse pass to Greg Matheson who hammered the ball high into the net to make it 6-0. There was some consolation for Lochaber when they pulled a goal back with the last hit of the game with Brennan MacDonald scoring. Both clubs commented on how well Des McNulty had refereed the game but there was a sting in the tail for Lovat’s Lorne MacKay as his booking looks set to trigger a ban for the Kilmallie game in a fortnight. Lovat have now found the net 23 times in their opening five league fixtures and they stay ahead of second placed Kingussie on goal difference.
Inveraray 2 Kinlochshiel 4 Kinlochshiel notched their first league win of the season, coming from behind to beat Inveraray 4-2 at the Winterton. ‘Shiel suffered a blow during the week when it was confirmed that Scottish international Finlay MacRae had suffered a broken bone in his arm during the previous week’s defat against Lovat so he faces a spell on the sidelines. Inveraray got off to a great start with Robert Wood scoring after just 3 minutes. John MacRae made it 1-1 on 31 minutes and youngster WD MacRae found the net a minute before the break to give ‘Shiel a 2-1 interval advantage. John MacRae got his second on the hour and Duncan Matheson made it 4-1 on 71 minutes. Inveraray got the afternoon’s final goal with Fraser Watt netting with 8 minutes left on the clock.
Cottages.com MacTavish Cup – First Round Kilmallie 0 Newtonmore 5 Newtonmore put their indifferent start to the season behind them as they beat Kilmallie 5-0 at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie, who had won at Newtonmore on the opening day of the shinty season, were missing Michael Rodger whilst Martin Stewart started on a strong bench with Bryan MacKay and Ian Robertson. There was a more familiar look to the Newtonmore side with Glen MacKintosh returning in attack. Iain Richardson retained his place in the side with David MacLean joining Drew MacDonald and Owen Fraser on the bench. Newtonmore have upped their training and switched their midweek sessions outside and it showed, particularly in their movement up front. Newtonmore’s Evan Menzies made the difference scoring four first half goals on 18, 36, 38 and 42 minutes. Two of the Scotland forward’s finishes saw him take the ball into feet before turning and finishing. He waited at the back post for another, scoring with a free shot from 15 yards after everyone had missed a ball into the goal area. For his fourth, Menzies ran through onto a long ball in from Jamie Robinson and he caught the ball first time to make it 4-0 at the break. Iain Robinson reacted well to run in and turn home a rebound on 54 minutes, after Kilmallie keeper Shane Gillies had saved from Glen MacKintosh, to make it 5-0. This was a solid start to the defence of a trophy Newtonmore have won for the last three years and the win sets them up nicely for an intriguing Mowi Premiership match at Lovat this Saturday.
Strathglass 5 Inverness 1 Strathglass reached the quarter-finals with a 5-1 win against Inverness at Cannich. Early goals from Colin Birnie on 5 minutes and Scott Douglas on 11 minutes, followed by Ruairidh Strachan’s strike on 34 minutes, made it 3-0 at the break. Charlie MacDonald pulled a goal back just 5 minutes into the second half but a second from Colin Birnie on 66 minutes and Penri Jones on 78 minutes gave the National Division side a 5-1 win.
Mowi National Division Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Fort William 2 Fort William extended their lead at the top of the National Division to three points after coming from behind to defeat Glasgow Mid Argyll 2-1at Yoker. GMA’s John Don MacKenzie was still missing whilst Fort William full back Mark Grant was suspended. Fort William’s Lewis Morrison went close to breaking the deadlock with a powerful 25 yard shot which cannoned back off the post. However it was GMA who broke the deadlock on 41 minutes. Garry Luke gathered possession deep in the half and he dropped the ball in on goal. With both keeper and full back failing to clear the danger, Duncan MacRae darted in to score. GMA finished the half strongly and it took a good Paul MacKay save from Garry Luke, with the keeper spreading his body, to deny the hosts a second. Fort William made a determined start to the second half and they levelled from the restart. A ball from midfield dropped at the feet of full forward Jack Fraser who played a neat pass to Arran MacPhee and he showed great awareness to play the a return pass to Fraser at the second attempt and he produced a great finish, volleying the ball home from the edge of the D. Fort William took confidence from the goal and they got another on 50 minutes when Lewis Morrison slammed the ball into the top corner of the net from the edge of the D. GMA then lost the influential Brian Slattery with a nasty cut to his lip. Fort William looked the likelier to increase their lead in the closing stages but they found GMA goalie Robert Dunnings in good form.
Skye Camanachd 5 Beauly 0 Skye Camanachd recorded their first league win of the season, beating Beauly 5-0 in their 3pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. With a match taking place earlier in the afternoon, the pitch was soft and it was moved 20 feet away from the Skeabost end to avoid the muddy goal areas. Skye played towards the Viewfield end of the ground in the first half and they created the game’s first chance when full centre John Gillies won the ball in midfield and he ran 15 yards before passing to Ross Gordon and, from 18 yards out, Gordon sent a shot screaming past Beauly keeper MacKay Murray’s right hand post. Skye kept pressing and they took the lead after 14 minutes. The Islanders were awarded a soft free-hit when Andrew Morrison was penalised for a shove on Jordan Murchison. Murchison took the set-piece and he placed a perfect pass to Iain MacLellan, in the starting line-up following his two goals from the bench against Fort William the previous week, and he peeled off his marker before striking a sweet back-hand strike which went in at the keeper’s left post. From the throw up, the ball landed to William MacKinnon on the Skye left and he hit a long ball into the penalty area where Jordan Murchison took it down before seeing his neat back-hand shot well-saved by MacKay Murray. Beauly tried to counter and William Zblewski ran in on goal but he was halted by a good Iain Nicolson challenge with the ball played out for a corner. The Skye centre line was getting stronger and they kept feeding the forwards. John Gillies won the ball and played a long pass from the right which found Iain MacLellan who ran 10 yards before crossing to Ross Gordon. Gordon got the ball under control before placing it perfectly past the keeper at his right post to make it 2-0 with 30 minutes gone. Beauly defender David Fraser, who had been troubled by a hamstring problem before the game, exacerbated the injury when trying to prevent the goal and he limped off. Beauly tested the Skye keeper just 5 minutes later. Calum Morrison gathered the ball in midfield and his speculative lob into the Skye defence came to Sean Stewart who hit a shot from 18 yards which Ryan Morrison saved with his stick before clearing. Both teams were putting in good, hard tackles with good hitting despite the conditions. The first half ended abruptly with both camps claiming there were still 5 minutes remaining and the referee asked both managers to ensure their players took a calmer approach to the second half which passed without incident. Skye ended the game as a contest within 25 seconds of the restart. John Gillies won the throw up and hit a fine pass to Jordan Murchison on the left and he whipped the ball first-time past the helpless keeper. Skye went close on 55 minutes when Iain Nicolson’s clearance from deep inside his own half found Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod on the right wing. MacLeod played in Will Cowie who turned his marker and, from 22 yards out; he sent a shot just the wrong side of the keeper’s left post. Skye replaced Iain MacLellan with James Pringle and Chris Rose for Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod soon after. Skye keeper Ryan Morrison made a great save with his stick on 63 minutes to deny Beauly youngster William Zblewski following a free-hit and play quickly went to the other end where Jordan Murchison’s shot came back off the post and the ball was cleared for a corner. James Pringle almost added a fourth when he won the ball and dribbled into the D but he slipped just as he looked to turn the ball home and a free-hit was awarded against him. Ross Gordon found Will Cowie who beat his man but his shot went by the post. However Pringle did find the net on 73 minutes when he went on another mazy run, cutting in near the bye-line and dribbling into the D before poking the ball with one hand inside at the keeper’s left corner to make it 4-0. The Skye defence were playing well, not allowing the Beauly forward line to settle and create chances and Martin Pringle didn’t put a foot wrong throughout the entire game as he won tackle after tackle and cleared his lines. Skye added a fifth goal with 10 minutes remaining. Chris Rose hit a diagonal ball from the right which found Jordan Murchison in space and he released a perfectly weighted pass to Ross Gordon who claimed his second goal with a shot inside the keeper’s right post. Beauly came close to getting a consolation goal on 85 minutes when William Zblewski took the ball on the left but the ever-alert Ryan Morrison saved the goal-bound shot and the visitors had to settle for a corner. Ross MacKinnon came on for Ross Gordon and almost scored immediately but keeper MacKay Murray saved. The home side came close to adding a sixth 3 minutes into stoppage time. John Gillies won possession in midfield and he ran forward with the ball before unleashing a 30 yard shot which went just over the bar. Skye deserved the win over the 90 minutes with Iain Nicolson commanding in his new role this season at buckshee back. Young James Morrison was also good in defence and the forwards played well as a unit, tackling fearlessly to gain possession and creating many chances for themselves. John Gillies played a key role in midfield where he battled well against Calum Morrison whilst William MacKinnon was also very good to his left. Beauly’s Angus Renwick showed great determination in an over-worked defence.
Sutherland Cup – First Round Lovat 5 Fort William 2 (After extra-time) It took extra-time to separate the Lovat and Fort William seconds before the hosts eventually ran out 5-2 winners at Balgate. Lovat again included Ryan Ferguson whilst Fort William’s David Wright returned from suspension. Grant Disher gave Fort William, who reached the semi-finals last year, the lead with a 15 minute goal. However it only took Lovat 5 minutes to draw level with Raymond Rennie scoring. Ryan Ferguson then gave Lovat an interval lead as he found the net on the stroke of half-time. Fort William finished the 90 minutes the stronger side and, with just a couple of minutes remaining, Grant Disher got his second to make it 2-2. Referee Jim Barr took the tie to an extra-time period and this belonged to Lovat with Raymond Rennie completing his hat-trick with efforts on 98 and 100 minutes and Jamie Matheson making it 5-2 with a goal on 106 minutes. Fort William’s David Wright was sent off for his part in an on-the-field melee.
Newtonmore 5 Glenorchy 2 The Newtonmore seconds have lifted the Sutherland Cup in three of the last four seasons and they are safely through to the second round after defeating Glenorchy 5-2 at the Eilan. Glenorchy made ‘More work for the win though; twice coming from behind during the first half. Duncan Gorman gave the home side an 8 minute lead but Graeme MacKechnie levelled on 29 minutes. Craig MacLeod restored ‘More’s lead on 41 minutes but Glenorchy again drew level; this time through Conor Sartain with only a couple of first half minutes remaining. Newtonmore surged in front in the second half though as Craig MacLeod completed his hat-trick with strikes on 62 and 75 minutes whilst Calum Stewart made it 5-2 on 77 minutes.
Skye Camanachd 7 Kilmallie 1 The Skye Camanachd reserves were too strong for the Kilmallie reserves, winning 7-1 in their noon throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. When referee John Matheson awarded Skye a penalty after just 2 minutes, Daniel Morrison stepped up to score. The Skye goals kept coming and Cameron MacKay on 9 minutes, Marcus Scott on 14 minutes and Sam MacPhee a couple of minutes later had them 4-0 ahead. Andrew Gibb pulled a goal back on 20 minutes but Cameron MacKay got his second on 44 minutes to make it 5-1 at the turn-around. Skye’s final two goals came late in the match as Marcus Scott got his second on 81 minutes and Iain Munro, scoring for the first time since his return to the club, made it 7-1 just a couple of minutes later. Skye Camanachd will host Lochside Rovers in the Sutherland Cup second round which is scheduled for Saturday 4 May 2019.

Former ‘Shiel player Kenneth Loades pulled a goal back for Inverness just 5 minutes into the second half before Cameron Jones took his tally to five goals with strikes on 55 and 60 minutes. ‘Shiel will be tested in the next round as they travel to holders Newtonmore.
Lochcarron 0 Glenurquhart 6 The Glenurquhart colts were comfortable 6-0 winners against Lochcarron at Battery Park. Neale Reid has returned to the Glen senior side this season and he was given some valuable game time for the reserves. Indeed it was Reid who opened the scoring on 28 minutes and he added a second just 5 minutes after the restart. Glenurquhart pulled away in the final quarter of the tie and Neale Reid completed his hat-trick on 65 minutes. Christopher Mack made it 4-0 with 20 minutes remaining and Charlie MacLeod’s late double on 78 and 85 minutes sealed the 6-0 success. The Glen travel to play the Inveraray seconds in the next round.

Caberfeidh’s Declan Wilson was free to play but he will miss their next outing after picking up a one-match suspension for a bookings points accumulation. Nick Dalgety gave ‘Garry the lead on 65 minutes and he added a second just 10 minutes from time. This was Cabers first league defeat of the season but they stay top of the Division, a point ahead of second placed Glengarry.
Mowi South Division 1 Aberdour 4 Lochside Rovers 0 Aberdour stay top of South 1 on goal difference after defeating Lochside Rovers 4-0 at Silversands. Aberdour’s Craig Grant was free of suspension but Angus Thorburn, Ali Abbott and Tom Aitchison were all unavailable. The travelling Lochside squad had several key absentees including manager Brian MacCallum who was at a family event. George Easton took charge of the side and, with no substitutes; he also had to play in attack. Chrissie MacMillan took the field as stand-in keeper. Aberdour dominated the early stages in what was a niggly game and they took the lead through a well-taken Craig Grant goal on 8 minutes. The hosts doubled their lead on 34 minutes. David MacKenzie made a determined effort to keep the ball in play wide on the wing and he had time to float the ball on the goal from distance and the ball ended up in the net. When Lochside pushed forward, they found the Aberdour defence to be in no mood to give anything away and it remained 2-0 at half-time. David McDougal added a third on 66 minutes when he got onto a rebound off a Lochside defender and he drilled the ball into the net. David MacKenzie, who was instrumental in his new position on the wing, made it 4-0 on 77 minutes. MacKenzie used a great turn of pace and ball control as he found the net for the second time in the afternoon. This was a good team performance from Aberdour, prompted by a strong midfield of Jack Mitchel, John Martin Philips and David MacKenzie, and there was the added bonus of a first clean sheet of the season.
Ballachulish 3 Taynuilt 0 Ballachulish only trail league leaders Aberdour on goal difference after they beat Tayforth 3-0 at the Jubilee Park. The pitch was soft and still showing the effects of previous games played in wet conditions. Balla’s Ally Banks began a two-game ban following his red card against Col Glen last week. Taynuilt suffered a blow ahead of throw up as two of their three centre line players were held up following a road traffic accident and they missed the start of the game. Ballachulish took full advantage and dominated the early proceedings. Balla’ made the breakthrough on 10 minutes when Lorne Brown turned is marker and beat keeper Reid with a low drive inside the post. The hosts doubled their lead just 4 minutes later with a goal of the highest quality. Cain MacPhee played the ball up to Lorne Brown who flicked it over his shoulder to Duncan MacDonald who volleyed a shot into the net. Things looked bad for Taynuilt at this stage but they managed to hang on until after the half hour mark when their missing players arrived and, for the rest of the half, Taynuilt took control of the game and put the home side under pressure for the first time. However with Dougie Rankin having an outstanding game at the centre of the defence, Ballachulish took their two-goal advantage into the break. The next goal was going to be crucial and Taynuilt had a glorious opportunity after 50 minutes but with a shot blazed over the bar from the edge of the circle, the chance was gone. This seemed to affect Taynuilt and they fell out of the game and Ballachulish started to dominate and it was no surprise when Scott Henderson scored after he reacted quickest after the ball came off the bar on 61 minutes. Ballachulish started to use the ball well and the only surprise was that they didn’t score more goals. Best for the Balla’ were Dougie Rankin, Cain MacPhee and Duncan MacDonald, with Steven Parr and Blair MacFarlane the pick of the visitors.
Col Glen 2 Inveraray 2 Col Glen and the Inveraray second team shared the points following a 2-2 draw at Glendaruel Col Glen were short of a few regulars and their absentees included Ian Wilson who started a two-match suspension. The Inveraray second team travelled the short distance without Steven Cameron and Peter McIntyre from the previous week. However in came experienced John MacKenzie and David Macpherson to help what was a youthful looking side. Inveraray started the stronger with their centre line taking control early on. The game was only 10 minutes old when a clean, crisp shy from wing centre David Macpherson went straight into the Col Glen net after some confusion in the home rear guard as to whether you can score direct from a shy. The ‘Aray forward line were resolutely attempting to stick to their task of playing the ball wide and getting runners to attack the home goal and, for the majority of time, it worked well and allowed plenty of shots on goal. Col Glen made attacks of their own but they either found the Inveraray defence in fine form, with young Calum MacDonald having a great game at half back, or they sent shots wide of the target. John MacKenzie almost doubled Inveraray’s lead but hit the woodwork with a fine drive so it remained 1-0 at the break. Col Glen came out for the second half with a more direct approach, targeting full forward Neil McKirdy and they levelled 5 minutes after the restart. A home set-piece saw the ball played in to Neil McKirdy who found space to turn and slam the ball into the net to make it 1-1. Inveraray were not deterred and they continued to play balls wide whilst moving off their men. The visitors had the chance to go back in front when John MacKenzie was upended inside the D and referee Euan MacDonald pointed to the spot. MacKenzie dusted himself down to take the penalty but he was once again thwarted by woodwork. Col Glen took the lead from another set-piece on 70 minutes. Sandy Paterson did well to find space inside the box and he slotted the ball home to put the hosts 2-1 ahead. Inveraray didn’t let their heads drop though and they drew level within a minute. John MacKenzie finally got his reward after picking the ball up in a central position, turning and striking the ball home from 20 yards out. Inveraray went on the ascendency for the final minutes but they were unable to convert the pressure into a winning goal. It was another improved performance from Andrew McMurdo’s young Inveraray side to earn a hard-fought point.
