The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 28 February 2015 | |
01 March 2015 On the final weekend before the start of the 2015 shinty season, some clubs beat the weather to make their final preparations on Saturday 28 February 2015.
Aberdour 0 Kyles Athletic 9 Kyles Athletic were 9-0 winners in their reserve meeting with Aberdour at Silver Sands. Kyles scorers were Brandon Wilson with a double, Roddy MacColl, Connor Giudici, a Scott MacDonald hat-trick and a goals from Kyle Mcmartin and Innes MacDonald.
Aberdour 1 Kyles Athletic 5 Kyles Athletic beat Aberdour 5-1 in their senior meeting at Silver Sands. This was a good contest and Aberdour paid the price for giving Roddy MacDonald too much space in the early part of the game and the Kyles’ talisman, whose brother Innes MacDonald played on the wing, grabbed a first half hat-trick. Matthew MacColl also scored in the first half to put Kyles 4-0 ahead at the break. However Aberdour rose to the challenge after the early setback and Angus Thornton set up Jack Kelly to pull a goal back in the second half to make it 4-1. The home side took their foot off the gas in the closing stages and Kyles’ Roddy MacColl nipped in to make it 5-1 just 5 minutes from time. The match was good preparation for Kyles ahead of their league opener against Marine Harvest Premiership champions Newtonmore next weekend. Aberdour will be especially pleased with the performances of young Finlay Williamson who stuck well to the task of marking Scotland international Roddy MacDonald and U17 players Brian Toal and Jack Mitchell who have stepped up from the Aberdour second string to boost the first team pool.
Glenurquhart P Boleskine P The meeting between the Glenurquhart second team and Boleskine was postponed as it was felt that the Blairbeg pitch couldn’t take an additional game.
Fort William P Lochside Rovers P The 1.30pm throw up between the Fort William second team and Lochside Rovers was postponed because of a water-logged An Aird.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Oban Camanachd 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll and Oban Camanachd put the final touches to their pre-season preparations with the Oban side running out 2-0 victors in their clash at Peterson Park, Yoker. Andrew McCuish and Iain MacMillan got the goals that made the difference.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Aberdeen University 1 The Glasgow Mid Argyll second team drew 1-1 with Aberdeen University in their 12.30pm throw up at Peterson Park, Yoker. Lewis Miller gave GMA an early lead but David Fraser levelled just before half time. Both teams had chances to win it before having to settle for a draw.
Glenurquhart 3 Strathglass 0 Glenurquhart beat Strathglass 3-0 to lift the MacDonald Cup in their 12.30pm throw up at Blairbeg. Strathglass were without key defender George Phimister and Neale Reid put the Glen ahead after 29 minutes before adding a second to double his side’s advantage. James MacPherson made it 3-0. A sign of Glenurquhart’s dominance was that Strathglass keeper Stevie MacLachlan collected the Shewglie Trophy for man of the match. New Glen captain Andrew Corrigan was presented with the MacDonald Cup by Camanachd Association President Jim Barr. Strath defenders Michael Stokes and (full back) Donald Fraser were also excellent. Earlier in the day, Glenurquhart U14 beat Strathglass U14 4-0 to win the Slaters Arms Trophy. Jed Stoddart put the Glen ahead from the penalty spot before Fergus Robertson netted twice to make it 3-0. Jed Stoddart got his second to round off the 4-0 win.
Inverness P SCOTS Camanachd P Inverness and SCOTS Camanachd were to meet in a 3pm throw up at the Bught Park outside pitch but the match was postponed. The outside pitch was deemed unplayable on Friday and Inverness will use that pitch during the opening weeks of the season until around late May 2015 as the main Bught Park pitch has been re-seeded and re-turfed in areas.
Kilmallie P Lochaber P The 1pm throw up between the Kilmallie and Lochaber second teams was postponed as the Canal Parks were ruled unplayable.
Kingussie 1 Kilmallie 1 Kingussie and Kilmallie drew 1-1 in their 2pm throw up at the Dell. James Falconer gave Kingussie a 20 minute lead but John Stewart levelled for Kilmallie around 10 minutes later. His first time shot flew low into the corner of the net from about the penalty spot following a low cross from Seb McMillan. One concern for new Kilmallie boss Mark MacPherson will be a groin injury suffered by key man Peter Carmichael.
Lochcarron P Skye Camanachd P The match between Lochcarron and the Skye Camanachd second team at Battery Park was called off earlier in the week because of an unplayable field. Skye tried to organise another friendly without success.
Oban Celtic P Kilmory P The friendly between Oban Celtic and Kilmory was postponed because of a water-logged pitch.
Oban Lorn 0 Glenorchy 0 Oban Lorn from Marine Harvest South Division 2 and Marine Harvest South Division 1 sides Glenorchy and Taynuilt held a three-way round-robin tournament at the Oban High School, 3G pitch. Oban Lorn and Glenorchy drew 0-0 in the opening match.
Taynuilt 2 Oban Lorn 1 Oban Lorn then fared well against more experienced opposition before eventually going down 2-1 to Taynuilt. David MacInnes was on target for Oban Lorn with Willie Neilson amongst the goals for Taynuilt.
Taynuilt 1 Glenorchy 0 Taynuilt made it two wins on the day when they beat Glenorchy 1-0. The three matches were played in terrible weather conditions and had it not been for the 3G pitch, the tournament would probably not have gone ahead.
