The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 27 June 2015 | |
28 June 2015 Kyles Athletic secured the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup for the third successive season and Lovat will play Newtonmore in the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals following the shinty action on Saturday 27 June 2015.
Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final Oban Camanachd 2 Kyles Athletic 4 Kyles Athletic lifted the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup with a 4-2 win over Oban Camanachd in the final at the Taynuilt Sports Field. Oban Camanachd boss Iain Campbell - a six time winner in this competition - made a significant change to his line-up with Gavin Stobbart returning in goal in place of Robert Dunnings who missed out because of a family bereavement. Kyles Athletic boss Norman MacDonald had defender Cameron Keith back after he missed the Artemis Macaulay Cup defeat against Inveraray. This allowed Thomas Whyte to move into midfield so Innes MacDonald started on the bench. The Oban Camanachd players wore training tops ahead of the match which paid tribute to their team-mate Jamie Kerr who died following an accident at work earlier this year. There was a minutes silence ahead of throw up to remember Jack Asher - who contributed so much to shinty over the years - who passed away earlier in the week. Kyles attacked from the throw up as Donald Irvine played a long ball to Dunkie Kerr on the right wing. Kerr showed good skills to get past his marker but was brought down. Gordon Whyte played a short free-hit to Grant Irvine and he sent a low shot on target which was saved with his feet by Gavin Stobbart. Roddy MacDonald reacted quickest and he bundled the ball over the line to give the Tighnabruaich side an opening minute lead. Oban Camanachd responded well and Andrew MacCuish shot on target from the left and although Kyles keeper John Whyte saved, he didn’t manage to clear his lines and Andrew MacCuish took down the loose ball but his effort from the edge of the D went wide. Kyles doubled their advantage following a move that started from the goal-hit. Grant Irvine gathered possession in midfield and he slipped the ball to Roddy MacDonald who found Dunkie Kerr and he played the ball into the D. Keeper Gavin Stobbart saved Gordon Whyte’s shot with his feet but he couldn’t clear the danger and Roddy MacDonald forced the ball into the net following the resultant goalmouth scramble to make it 2-0 with just over 4 minutes played. Oban Camanachd were presented with a chance to reduce the deficit on 15 minutes when referee Billy Wotherspoon awarded them a penalty after consulting his goal judge, Robert Baxter. Scott MacMillan took the spot-hit but his low shot lacked power and John Whyte saved with his feet before clearing the danger. Kyles went 3-0 ahead on the half hour mark and the goal came following a passing move which involved all four forwards. Roddy MacDonald came deep to collect the ball. He passed to Grant Irvine who found Dunkie Kerr. Kerr played a one-two with Whyte before turning his marker and his low shot from the left bounced across keeper Stobbart into the back of the net. Lorne Dickie pulled a goal back on 40 minutes when he ran onto a deflected ball out the left and with three Kyles defenders around him, he some-how found enough space to thread the ball into the corner of the net to make it 3-1. Oban Camanachd’s hopes for a comeback were dashed on 49 minutes when Thomas Whyte made it 4-1. A terrific Dunkie Kerr run from the right took him into the D, Stobbart came off his line to block the ball but it fell into the path of Thomas Whyte who sent a great strike high into the Oban net from just outside the D. Oban Camanachd pulled another goal back on 68 minutes when Daniel Cameron chipped a ball forward and Andrew MacCuish ran out to the left and he hammered the ball home with a shot on his left side to make it 4-2. Kyles were awarded a penalty on 87 minutes when Roberto Zavaroni tumbled inside the D and Wotherspoon pointed to the spot after again consulting goal judge Robert Baxter. Gordon Whyte took the penalty but he hit the ball straight at keeper Stobbart who saved with his chest before clearing the ball. The final whistle signalled a third consecutive Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup success for a dominate Kyles side over the period. They weren’t at their best at Taynuilt but the two early goals always had Oban Camanachd on the back foot. Kyles Athletic play-maker Grant Irvine was named man of the match and he received the inaugural Donald J MacNiven Memorial medal. Kyles Athletic captain Callum Miller was presented with Glasgow Celtic Society Cup by sponsor Gregor Cameron, himself a former Inveraray player.
Artemis Macaulay Cup – Quarter Finals Kilmallie 0 Newtonmore 12 Newtonmore are into the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals after they beat Kilmallie 12-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie were without Peter Carmichael as he started a two game ban following his red card in the Balliemore Cup defeat to Beauly last weekend. Craig MacIsaac also had to sit this one out as he served a one game ban for a bookings points accumulation. Shane Gillies returned in goal for Kilmallie after missing last week’s game. However Michael Rodger was another notable absentee. Newtonmore also has suspension troubles. Jamie Robinson served the second match of his two-game ban whilst Chris Sellar served a one-game ban for a bookings points accumulation. Defenders Norman Campbell and Cameron Binnie were absent through injury. Goals from Glen MacKintosh on 3 and 12 minutes gave ‘More an early cushion and Evan Menzies on 21 minutes and Glen MacKintosh just 4 minutes later – to complete his hat-trick - made it 4-0 at the interval. Glen MacKintosh notched another on 50 minutes with Fraser MacKintosh making it 6-0 a couple of minutes later. Paul MacArthur bagged a brace with goals on 60 and 65 minutes to make it 8-0.There was no let-up for Kilmallie as Conor Jones on 70 minutes and Craig Ritchie a couple of minutes later made it 10-0. Glen MacKintosh got his fifth goal of the afternoon on 76 minutes and Conor Jones made it a dozen with his second strike just 5 minutes from time. The margin of victory sent a message to other sides that whilst Newtonmore might have suffered a set-back with their RBS MacTavish Cup Final defeat to Glenurquhart, they are determined to make up for it in shinty’s other competitions. Innes Wood was the referee.
Kingussie 2 Lovat 3 Lovat are through to the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals after they beat Kingussie 3-2 in their 3pm throw up at the Dell. Kingussie were without Lee Bain, who will be abroad for a three week period. Kingussie started with Louis Munro at buckshee back and Fraser Munro was in attack. Lovat were minus the suspended Callum Cruden who served a one-game ban for a bookings points accumulation. Michael MacKenzie was still on holiday as was Ryan Ferguson so Danny Kelly continued in defence. Lorne Mackay played with strapping on his injured knee and he started at full centre with Greg Matheson at full forward. Lovat boss John MacRitchie was also without Kevin Bartlett who was playing in a golf tournament and he gave a place in the side to Connell MacIllechiar at wing centre. The surface at the Dell was in immaculate condition which was of great benefit to both sides. The opening goal came when referee Ron Kennedy pointed to the penalty spot on 31 minutes after Fraser Gallacher was fouled inside the D. Greg Matheson converted the penalty to put Lovat 1-0 ahead with what was the only goal of the first half. Greg Dawson started in goal for Kingussie but work commitments took him away at the interval so Rory MacGregor took over between the posts. Kingussie co-managers Russell Jones and Davie Anderson made another change as they moved James Hutchison from full back into attack. Garry Munro went to full back and Darren Hanlon moved to replace Munro wing back. Greg Matheson made it 2-0 on 53 minutes when he pulled down a clearance from Rory MacGregor around 25 yards from goal and he sent a terrific shot into the back of the net. Greg Matheson completed his hat-trick on 63 minutes. Rory MacGregor made a good save from Euan Ferguson but the ball spun high into the air and Matheson was on hand to volley it into the net. Lovat took on youngsters Rory Campbell – for his senior team debut - and Scott MacKenzie. A limping Lorne MacKay came off. Kingussie pulled a goal back on 82 minutes when he followed a ball into the goal area and he knocked it past Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald to make it 3-1. Savio Genini got his and Lovat’s second goal a couple of minutes later and suddenly Lovat’s lead was down to a single goal. Lovat brought Lorne MacKay back on in an attempt to win back the midfield area and they held on for the win. Lorne MacKay was Lovat’s top player with Martin Mainland and three-goal Greg Matheson also worthy of a mention. The win sets up an Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-final meet with Newtonmore. The Balgate side have a free Saturday this coming weekend as many of the players and officials attend the wedding of keeper Stuart MacDonald. Kingussie will look to bounce back against RBS MacTavish Cup winners Glenurquhart in their league encounter at the Dell next weekend.
Bullough Cup – Quarter Finals Aberdour 3 Col Glen 2 The Aberdour reserves are through to the Bullough Cup semi-finals after they came from two goals down to beat Col Glen 3-2 at Silver Sands. Col Glen went into the tie on a good run of form, and they sit in third place in Marine Harvest South Division 2, trailing Glasgow Mid Argyll seconds and Tayforth only on goal difference. The Aberdour colts in comparison are bottom of the same division with just a single point. Col Glen made a strong start to the tie and they launched wave after wave of attack on the Aberdour defence. The pressure paid off as the visitors took the lead on 13 minutes through Willie MacVicar. That was the only goal of the first half, thanks in the main to some good saves from Aberdour player / coach Craig Callaghan in goal. Col Glen doubled their advantage on 49 minutes with a good goal finished off by Scott MacVicar. After going two goals down however, Aberdour were not about to give up and they showed some good battling in midfield and in defence. They pulled a goal back on 57 minutes with some great link-up play up front and when the ball was slipped to Tom Abbott, he found Chris Bowerman who made it 2-1. The Aberdour forwards were displaying impressive movement and the home side levelled on 62 minutes. The goal came following another charge forward the ball was played over the Col Glen full back and Chris Bowerman showed composure just outside the D and he scored to make it 2-2. Aberdour’s confidence was up and they went in front for the first time in the tie a couple later when some great link-up play between Tom Abbott, Chris Bowerman and Lisa MacColl cut open the Col Glen defence and when the ball was played back to Chris Bowerman, he found the back of the net from the edge of the D to complete his hat-trick to make it 3-2. Col Glen hit back and they pressed for an equaliser. They did have the ball in the back of the net in the closing stages but the effort was ruled out for offside by referee Alan Harrison. Aberdour were well served by new-comer Euan Green in defence and their young, fit midfield kept them in the tie at some difficult moments in the match. Aberdour will now play Lochside Rovers or the Kyles Athletic second team in the last four of the all-South tournament.
Marine Harvest Premiership Kinlochshiel 4 Inveraray 3 Kinlochshiel twice came from behind to beat Inveraray 4-2 at Kirkton. Keith MacRae made a welcome return for Kinlochshiel after some injury problems and Nathan Whear came back into the starting line-up. Ewan Falconer and Donald Nixon dropped onto the bench and Fraser MacVicar was working. Inveraray travelled with a strong side but Douglas Dando was missing and they were looking to add to their only league victory, which was ironically against champions Newtonmore. The wet west coast weather left the Kirkton pitch looking more like a surface you would expect in mid-March and not as it should have been at the end of June. Inveraray forward Chris Crawford broke the deadlock on 5 minutes when he took advantage of some poor marking from the Shiel defence and he rifled a cross from the right past a helpless Scott Kennedy in the ‘Shiel goal at the second attempt. Inveraray’s quick, one-touch shinty was pleasing on the eye and it took a brilliant double save from home keeper Scott Kennedy to stop the visitors doubling their lead on 14 minutes. Euan McMurdo and Lewis MacNicol combined with Kennedy turning away the former’s fierce strike and then denying the latter from the rebound. Play then flowed from end to end but the home side drew level on 20 minutes after good initial play from John MacRae. The returning Keith MacRae was in the right place when Inveraray keeper Graham MacPherson made a terrific save from a Jordan Fraser blockbuster but the goalie was unable to clear the ball from his goalmouth and MacRae pounced to score from 5 yards out. David Falconer took the field on in place of Duncan “DA” MacRae for the home side. Inveraray got themselves back in front on 29 minutes when Garry MacPherson and Euan McMurdo played a good one to one passing movement which split the ‘Shiel defence and Gary MacPherson drove an unstoppable shot into the net at Scott Kennedy’s left handed post. Scott Kennedy stretched to tip away a great strike from Lewis MacNicol which was heading for the top corner of the net. Good play between John MacRae and Keith MacRae set Jordan Fraser through on goal but he was blatantly brought down at the edge of the D. Inveraray cleared the resultant free-hit. Play quickly flowed to the other end and Scott Kennedy dived across his goal to keep out a Euan McMurdo effort. The home side drew level for a second time on the stroke of half time when Jordan Fraser latched onto a rebound off keeper MacPherson, who saved John MacRae’s initial shot, but the goalie was unable to get the ball away and Fraser volleyed the ball home to make it 2-2 at the interval. Both teams performed really well in the first half but the second 45 minutes was not as exciting with neither side able to create many chances. Kinlochshiel’s three MacRae brothers combined to threaten the Inveraray goal early in the second half. First, Inveraray goalie Graham MacPherson palmed away a Finlay MacRae effort from distance and he then saved rebound attempts from both Keith MacRae and John MacRae. Chris Crawford passed up a chance to put his side back in front on 63 minutes when a pass found him with time and space but he drove wide of target. Graham MacPherson then saved under his bar to keep out a Jordan Fraser effort from a tight angle. ‘Shiel made a late surge and when MacPherson kept out a Fraser drive with his foot, it looked as if the game might end all square. However with just a couple of minutes remaining, Inveraray’s Allan MacDonald committed a foul just outside the D, Oliver MacRae played the free-hit to Jordan Fraser who stroked the ball inside keeper MacPherson’s left hand post to make it 3-2 and put ‘Shiel ahead for the first time in the match. Inveraray attacked from the throw up and they played the ball up to the ‘Shiel defence. However Paul MacRae’s clearance reached the ‘Shiel forward line where Oliver MacRae picked up possession and from close range and he scrambled the ball into the net to make it 4-2. Referee John Angus Gillies blew his final whistle seconds after the resultant throw up. Both teams played well, especially in the first half, on a very wet and muddy pitch and this was a good match for the spectators to watch. This was a hard-fought but fair encounter with no bookings. Kinlochshiel’s top player was John MacRae who worked tirelessly in attack, closely followed by substitute David Falconer who played really well against Garry MacPherson. The home support will be delighted to see Keith MacRae last the game with no obvious reaction to his injury troubles. Inveraray forwards Gary MacPherson and Ewan McMurdo caused ‘Shiel a lot of problems over the 90 minutes. The win lifts Kinlochshiel into third place in the league whilst Inveraray are just a point above bottom side Oban Camanachd and they have played a game more.
Lochaber 2 Fort William 0 Lochaber climb to fourth place in the table after they beat Fort William 2-0 at Spean Bridge. Zandz Ferguson remained on the Lochaber injury list and boss Ally Ferguson was forced to make a change in goal as keeper Callum MacDonald was unwell so Lachlan Campbell took his place between the sticks. Fort William’s Daniel Stewart missed out as he served a one game ban for a bookings points accumulation. However Bryan Simpson was back and Duncan Rodger started in attack. Fort William played with the wind advantage in what was a reasonably even first half. Lochaber stand-in keeper Lachlan Campbell produced a cracking save from a Duncan Rodger shot from 12 yards out. Lochaber went in front on the half hour mark when a good move involving all their forwards was finished off by Stuart Callison who beat Fort William keeper Paul MacKay from close range to make it 1-0. Fort William had a chance to level when referee Evan MacRae awarded them a penalty. Bryan Simpson’s spot-hit was well-struck but Lachlan Campbell produced a brilliant save as he stretched high to his left to turn the ball away with his caman. Both teams pressed for the remainder of the half but Lochaber went into the break with a 1-0 advantage. Lochaber, who now had the wind advantage, looked stronger in the second half and they created a number of chances. However Paul MacKay in the Fort William goal was in great form and he kept his side in the game with some tremendous saves during the second half from Kevin Ferguson and Shaun Nicolson. Lochaber took Ben Delaney on in place of Conor Sweeney and with just a couple of minutes remaining, Delaney beat MacKay with a well struck shot into the bottom right hand corner of the keeper’s goal to make it 2-0. Lachlan Campbell, with his two crucial saves, and buckshee back Brian MacDonald were outstanding for Lochaber and the whole squad will be very pleased with a good result in this derby encounter which takes them level on points with third place Kinlochshiel. Paul MacKay was excellent for the visitors who will look to get back on the winning way against Kinlochshiel at Kirkton next weekend.
Marine Harvest National Division Caberfeidh 2 Inverness 2 Caberfeidh and Inverness shared the points in a 2-2 draw in their noon throw up at Castle Leod. Inverness forward Chris Johnston scored shinty’s first goal of the day when he put his side ahead in the opening minute. That was the only goal of the first half but Cabers player / manager Lee Nicol drew his side level on 57 minutes. When referee Deek Cameron awarded the visitors a penalty on 64 minutes, James Cameron stepped up to score. However Blair Morrison pulled Caberfeidh level for a second time when he netted just a couple of minutes later to make it 2-2. Caberfeidh stay fifth and Inverness stay sixth in the table
Skye Camanachd P Beauly P The noon throw up between Skye Camanachd and Beauly at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree was postponed. The match coincided with the funeral of Colin Murchison, Bernisdale, which was attended by several Skye Camanachd players and officials.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Glenurquhart 5 Fort William 1 The Fort William second team suffered their first league defeat of the season when they lost 5-1 to the Glenurquhart second team at Blairbeg. Glenurquhart fielded a strong side although keeper David MacFadyen was missing so U14 keeper Finlay Ralston came in between the sticks. Former Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Motherwell and Ross County goalkeeper Michael Fraser made his shinty return for the Glen and James MacPherson lined-up in attack. Fort William’s top scorer Duncan Rodger was on first team duty. Calum Miller put the Glen ahead in the opening minute. James MacPherson got a second on 5 minutes and the former Lovat player made it 3-0 on 23 minutes. Callum Miller got his second on 32 minutes to make it 4-0 and James MacPherson completed his hat-trick 5 minutes from the interval to leave the Glen five goals to the good after an impressive first half performance. The goal-glut didn’t continue in the second half and Scott Knox grabbed a consolation goal for Fort William a minute from time to make it 5-1. Glenurquhart stay in third place, four points behind leaders Fort William.
Newtonmore 11 Kinlochshiel 0 The Newtonmore reserves were in devastating form as they bear the Kinlochshiel reserves 11-0 at the Eilan. Calum Stewart started things off with a goal after 9 minutes. Iain Robinson added a second on 20 minutes before Calum Stewart got his second 5 minutes later to make it 3-0. Referee Martin MacLean awarded ‘More a penalty on 31 minutes and Iain Robinson scored his second goal of the game from the spot. Calum Stewart completed his hat-trick 5 minutes from the break to make it 5-0 at half-time. Darren Fowler got in on the act with a goal 10 minutes into the second half and Calum Stewart got his fourth on 58 minutes to make it 7-0. Iain Robinson completed his hat-trick on 66 minutes and he got his fourth goal just 4 minutes later, either side of a Jordan Beaton goal on 67 minutes, to take the home side into double figures. Calum Stewart got his fifth goal of the afternoon when he made it 11-0 just 7 minutes from time. The emphatic win meant the Newtonmore first and second teams amassed an incredible 23 goals between them in their two Saturday fixtures. The Newtonmore reserves remain second in the league but they are now just four points behind their Fort William counter-parts and they have a game in hand.
Strathglass 7 Lochcarron 3 Strathglass beat Lochcarron 7-3 at Cannich. Darren Reid was top scorer for the home side with four goals. Josh Fraser, Chris Shankland and Donald Fraser got the others. Lachlan Dean Morrise, Johnny Stewart and Liam Arnott were on target for the Battery Park side.
Kingussie 4 Beauly 3 The Kingussie colts beat the Beauly colts 4-3 in an exciting noon throw up at the Dell. Beauly were 3-1 winners when the sides met in the league at Braeview Park just 5 weeks earlier. It was mostly Kingussie in the first half of this match and Kevin Thain put them ahead with a 15 yard strike from just to the right of the penalty spot on 23 minutes. Kyle MacDonald made some good saves in the Beauly goal but he could do little as Kevin Thain doubled the Kings advantage with a rocket shot from the edge of the D just on the half-time whistle. Beauly fought back at the start of the second half and Ross Forbes burst forward from midfield to make it 2-1 with a 12 yard shot a minute after the restart. Owen Reid restored Kingussie’s two-goal cushion 5 minutes later when the wing centre’s effort from distance deceived keeper Kyle MacDonald and the ball nestled high in the net to make it 3-1. Sandy Elrick reduced the deficit to 3-2 on 62 minutes when he beat a couple of players before scoring. Kevin Thain completed his hat-trick on 76 minutes with a 15 yard strike to make it 4-2. It was the turn of young Kingussie goalie Robert Shiells to make some good stops in the second half and Ryan Borthwick did a lot of mopping up at the back. Beauly full forward Martin Davidson had a great tussle with Kingussie full back Rory Fraser. And it was Davidson who scored 3 minutes from time set up a grandstand finish. Davidson gathered the ball 18 yards from goal and he steadied himself before crashing the ball high into the net to make it 4-3. A late Sandy Elrick run almost brought an equaliser as the youngster then slipped the ball past keeper Rohnert Shiells but the ball rolled back off the post. Kingussie saw out the remainder of the match to take the points.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Glenorchy 1 Oban Celtic 1 The game between Glenorchy and Oban Celtic was rescheduled for Tuesday 23 June 2015 with a 7pm throw up at Mart Park. Both teams went into the fixture having played five league matches. However they had contrasting fortunes as Glenorchy sat second bottom in the table with only one win and four defeats whilst third place Oban Celtic had enjoyed four wins and one defeat. Oban Celtic started well but they found Andrew Smith in the Glenorchy goal to be a formidable barrier. However the opening goal came against the run of play as Kieran MacKay gave Glenorchy the lead with a goal after 22 minutes. Oban Celtic keeper Stephen Davidson got a hand to the ball but he couldn’t keep it out. The pattern of play remained the same though and Lee Askew and Daniel Madej had chances to draw the Oban side level. However the equaliser came on 38 minutes when Oban Celtic top scorer Lee Askew played the ball into the D but it was missed by the forwards and deceived the home defence and it finally ended up nestled in the corner of the net to make it 1-1. Despite enjoying the bulk of the pressure Oban Celtic, there were no goals in the second half and that was largely down to Glenorchy defender Allan MacKechnie who was superb and of course keeper Andrew Smith who made a number of great saves. The visitors brought on substitute Kenny Wotherspoon, who was back from a knee injury but they continued to pass up opportunities in front of goal. Glenorchy had a couple of chances in the second half and they had a goal disallowed for offside and a Kieran McKay effort almost sneaked over the line. Oban Celtic’s best chance of the second period came when referee Alex MacVicar penalised Glenorchy keeper Andrew Smith for a kick and pointed to the penalty spot. However Lee Askew’s penalty went wide of target. So the sides shared the points and despite dropping their first point of the season, Oban Celtic climbed to third place on goal difference ahead of the weekend fixtures.
Lochside Rovers 2 Oban Celtic 3 Oban Celtic go top of Marine Harvest South Division 1 after they saw off a Lochside Rovers comeback to win 3-2 in their noon derby throw up at Mossfield. The Lochside Rovers players wore training tops ahead of the match which paid tribute to former player Jamie Kerr who died following an accident at work earlier this year. Oban Celtic made a great start to the match and they scored twice in two minutes to lead 2-0. Neil Carmichael opened the scoring on 16 minutes and Donald Campbell made it 2-0 just 60 seconds later. Lochside Rovers captain Craig MacDougall got his side back in the game with a goal on 61 minutes and Scott Dempster levelled the contest when he netted with just 11 minutes remaining. Stephen Davidson turned in a man of the match performance in the Oban Celtic goal and a share of the points seemed likely. However the winning goal came with just 2 minutes remaining as Daniel Madej went on a mazy run before scoring a goal fit to win any match. This was Lochside Rovers first league defeat of the season and they drop to third place in the league, just a point off top spot. The Lochside Rovers players and officials made a quick dash to Taynuilt after the match to cheer on their senior side in the Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final against Kyles Athletic.
Bute 5 Kilmory 0 Fifth place Bute beat second bottom Kilmory 5-0 at the Meadows. David Whitelaw opened the scoring for the Islanders on 8 minutes. Gordon MacMillan made it 2-0 on 20 minutes and it stayed that way until the interval. Robert Walker finished twice on 51 and 70 minutes to make it 4-0 and a James Craig strike on 73 minutes completed the 5-0 win.
Glenorchy 0 Strachur 0 Glenorchy and Strachur shared the points following a goalless draw in their 1pm throw up at Mark Park. Glenorchy’s Graeme Morrice was available to play but his booking against Oban Celtic earlier in the week means that he will miss next weekend’s league trip to the Meadows to play Bute. Strachur had Alan Paterson free of his two-match ban but Andrew Wilson served the second game of his two-game suspension. Strachur will have more suspension worries as Iain Wilson was red carded by referee Robert Baxter in this encounter.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Kilmallie 5 Caberfeidh 2 League leaders Caberfeidh seconds lost 5-2 against the Kilmallie seconds at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie were without Andrew McAlister and Jordan MacPhee. Both served one match bans after they were sent off in the team’s last outing; a 7-1 defeat to the Lochaber reserves at Spean Bridge a fortnight earlier. Stuart Kryzanowski got both Caberfeidh goals but Bryan MacKay hat-trick and efforts from Ross MacKenzie and Martin Munro gave the home side a 5-2 win which moves them up to fifth place in the league.
Skye Camanachd 2 Aberdeen University 1 Skye Camanachd stay third after they beat Aberdeen University 2-1 in their 3pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Skye Camanachd second team captain David MacInnes returned to the side after playing for the first team last weekend. The Students were without David Fraser who was suspended following his red card against Lochaber last weekend. Skye went in front on 35 minutes when forward James Pringle made a great run across goal and his cut-back from the left picked out Angie MacDonald in space and he scored to make it 1-0. Angie MacDonald got his and Skye’s second on 41 minutes when he knocked the ball past his marker before netting to make it 2-0. Aberdeen pressed in the closing stages of the first half and they got their reward when Stuart Cameron slammed a rebound off Skye goalie Jamie Gannon into the net following a corner on the left to make it 2-1. There were no goals in the second half so Skye edged this close encounter.
Lewis Camanachd 1 Glengarry 5 Lewis Camanachd welcomed Glengarry to Shawbost for their 2.15pm throw up. Daniel MacLennan was free of suspension for Glengarry after serving his one match ban but he didn’t make the trip. Glengarry enjoyed some early pressure although Paddy Sinclair and Donald Lamont both had efforts on goal for the home side. Lewis went ahead following some great wing play from Ally Lamont and he crossed for Duncan MacIntyre to make it 1-0. Lewis had chances to increase their lead before Stuart Gregory equalised for Glengarry with a great shot and the sides went into the break on level terms. A 10 minute goal-blitz early in the second half saw ‘Garry lead 4-1. Donald Lamont put the ball just wide of goal before the visitors added a fifth. Another from Stuart Gregory, two from Ruairidh MacDonald and an Andrew Gilchrist goal all counted for Glengarry in the second half. Second place Glengarry could have ended up with a bigger winning margin but for some good saves from home goalie Euan Gilmour. The Craigard side are now just a point behind league leaders Caberfeidh seconds and they have a couple of games in hand.
Boleskine 4 Lochaber 1 Boleskine beat the Lochaber second team 4-1 in their noon throw up at Smith Park, Farr. Robert Wotherspoon, a Neil Hope double and a Stuart Matheson own goal all counted for Boleskine. Shan Kane replied for Lochaber.
Inverness 2 Strathspey Camanachd 1 The Inverness reserves beat Badenoch & Strathspey 2-1 at the Bught Park. Inverness opened the scoring on 7 minutes when their defence cleared the ball up-field and their centre line found Jason McLeod who slipped the ball through to Stuart MacRae and his well-struck shot hit the back of the net to make it 1-0. The Highland Capital side went 2-0 ahead on 20 minutes. Ewen MacKinnon played a ball on top of the Strathspey keeper and Jason McLeod ran in win possession and he took the ball around the keeper before slotting it home. Inverness were strong in the first half and looked like they could add to their tally. Strathspey set up a tense finish when former Newtonmore player Mark MacDonald made it 2-1 with just 15 minutes remaining. However Inverness saw out the remainder of the match to record their first league win of the season.
