The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 27 July 2019 | |
28 July 2019 Newtonmore reached the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final and Kingussie stay out in front in the Mowi Premiership following the shinty action on Saturday 27 July 2019.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup – Semi-Final Newtonmore 4 Caberfeidh 4 (Newtonmore won 7-5 after extra-time) Newtonmore reached the 2019 Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final after beating Caberfeidh 7-5 after extra-time in their 4.05pm throw up at the Bught Park. Newtonmore captain Evan Menzies was free of suspension but a groin injury restricted him to a place on the bench. Ewen Fraser and Craig Ritchie recovered sufficiently from niggles to start but injury continued to rule out Michael Russell, Glen MacKintosh and Duncan Gorman whilst Neil Stewart was added to the injury list. Caberfeidh talisman Kevin Bartlett was free of his one-match ban and he took up his usual position in attack. Newtonmore’s Rory Kennedy was tasked with halting Craig Morrison’s impressive scoring run whilst ‘More fielded Jamie Robinson at full forward after he scored against Kingussie the previous week. Cabers made a steady enough start with Kevin Bartlett’s strike from distance the nearest they came to an opening goal. However Newtonmore took an early grip of the tie when they netted twice in four minutes. Iain Robinson got the opener on 14 minutes when Jamie Robinson’s shot, following a free-hit, was saved by Caberfeidh keeper Ewan Pilcher and, not for the first time this season, Robinson was quickly in to stroke the rebound home. On 17 minutes, Craig Ritchie won possession in the middle of the park and David MacLean sent the ball long. Jamie Robinson got the ball under control to the right of the D before slipping it inside to the on-rushing Drew MacDonald who swept the ball into the net to make it 2-0. Newtonmore were in the ascendancy and, with referee Ross Brown playing advantage, Drew MacDonald dribbled forward from the right but his shot from inside the D went across the face of the goal. Cabers responded and Craig Morrison lifted a shot over the top before he played a captain’s role; pulling a goal back on 38 minutes. Kevin Bartlett knocked a corner down and Morrison produced a great finish to make it 2-1. Newtonmore went back on the attack and Iain Robinson cut the ball back but Ewan Pilcher saved Drew MacDonald’s strike and it took a great Ewan Pilcher save, diving to his left to deny Iain Robinson before the keeper then saved with his feet from Jamie Robinson. The second half was only a couple of minutes old when Cabers drew level. There seemed little danger when Craig Morrison played the ball to Jamie MacKintosh on the right but his shot deceived Kenny Ross and ended up in the net to make it 2-2. Kenny Ross then made an outstanding save, using his caman above his head to keep out a Craig Morrison piledriver from a central position. Newtonmore got themselves back in front on 54 minutes. Iain Robinson played the ball in from the left to David MacLean and his measured shot through a crowded goal area evaded the diving Ewan Pilcher in goal. Owen Fraser replaced an injured Conor Jones for Newtonmore on the hour. Craig Morrison was denied by a good Andy MacKintosh challenge before the Cabers top scorer flashed a shot wide and then saw a shot saved with his feet by Kenny Ross. Evan Menzies came off the ‘More bench for a limping Ewen Fraser with 20 minutes to go and he forced a Pilcher save with his first touch. Jamie Robinson’s then tested the Caberfeidh custodian who also blocked an Evan Menzies attempt from the rebound. Caberfeidh introduced James MacLeod for Calum MacKinnon with 10 minutes to go and they tied the match once more on 81 minutes. Ally MacLennan gathered possession in space in the middle of the park and he launched the ball forward to Craig Morrison who allowed the ball to run by him as he turned Rory Kennedy. Kenny Ross came off his line but keeper and full back collided leaving Morrison with a gaping goal and h made it 3-3. There was more drama 4 minutes from time as Evan Menzies broke inside the right of the D. Picher came off his line and brought the forward down. Referee Ross Brown consulted goal judge Brian MacKay before awarding a penalty. Steven Macdonald sent the penalty low to the keeper’s left to make it 4-3 and ‘More led again. However, with seconds of this breathless match remaining, Craig Morrison played a free-hit to the right to Ryan MacKay and his shot swerved high into the net to make it 4-4. Pilcher saved to thwart Menzies at the death before referee Ross Brown took this thrilling tie into extra-time. ‘More began extra-time on the attack as Jamie Robinson shot over from an Evan Menzies pass from the left before Pilcher again saved from Menzies. Cabers responded and Craig Morrison’s effort from distance went over the bar. However the Castle Leod side suffered the loss of a second penalty on 97 minutes. Drew MacDonald played in Jamie Robinson who rounded the keeper but, just as he was about the to steer the ball home, keeper Ewan Pilcher threw his stick at the ball and Robinson’s shot came off the post. Referee Ross Brown had no alternative but to point to the spot and Steven Macdonald again finished low into the net, to the keeper’s left, to make it 5-4. Caberfeidh refused to give up though and they were level for a fourth time just 3 minutes later. Ally MacLennan played a free-hit from the right which Kevin Bartlett flicked on to Craig Morrison and he squeezed a shot inside the keeper’s right post and it was now 5-5. Kenny Ross got his chest behind a Ryan MacKay effort as the first period of extra-time drew to a close. Newtonmore got themselves back in front on 107 minutes as Ewen Fraser, back on the field, scrambled the ball over the line after Evan Menzies had shown great persistence as he cut into the D from the left although the ball may well have gone over the line off Caberfeidh substitute James MacLeod. The players on both sides were clearly feeling the frantic pace and ‘More made their final change as Iain Richardson took over in midfield from Fraser MacKintosh. ‘More sealed the win on 114 minutes. Evan Menzies was again in the thick of it as he got away from his marker on the right before cutting inside and picking out Jamie Robinson at the back post and he turned the ball home to make it 7-5. There was still time from Craig Morrison to go close from a great Ryan MacKay ball into the D but this time there would be no Cabers fight-back. Caberfeidh full back Scott MacLachlan picked up a late booking for chopping down Iain Richardson as he broke down the left shortly before Ross Brown brought this epic battle to an end. Both teams deserve credit for serving up such an entertaining tie but its holders Newtonmore who can now look forward to appearing in this year’s Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final which takes place at An Aird, Fort William on Saturday 14 September 2019. The second semi-final between Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic takes place on Saturday 10 August 2019.
Mowi Premiership Oban Camanachd 2 Kingussie 3 It was unlucky thirteen for Oban Camanachd as they lost 3-2 to Kingussie at Mossfield. The Oban side have been building momentum in recent weeks and they went into the match with confidence on the back of a twelve-match winning run. Camanachd manager Stephen Sloss had no new injury concerns but he was without defender Garry Lord who was at a wedding so Chrissie MacMillan came into the side. Kingussie boss John Gibson listed the injured James Hutchison as a substitute. Kingussie made a good start and home keeper Cameron Sutherland was forced into two great saves in the opening couple of minutes. Sutherland first turned a James Falconer shot away for a corner following a Kingussie hit-in. Then, Sutherland did well to keep out Savio Genini’s effort from the resultant corner. This set the tone for the match although Aidan MacIntyre had a chance on 6 minutes when he got onto a ball to the back post but he sent his shot over from a tight angle. Kingussie’s Liam Borthwick celebrated his call-up to the Scotland U17 squad when he gave Kingussie a 14 minute lead. Ruaridh Anderson’s initial shot was saved with his foot by Cameron Sutherland but Borthwick got the rebound at the edge of the D and he went to shoot before striking the ball at the second attempt, low into the corner of the net. Kingussie looked the hungrier side and Ruaridh Anderson fired wide on 31 minutes but made no mistake a minute before the break. Cameron Sutherland was again in action, making a double-save of Ruaridh Anderson. However from the resulting corner, Ruaridh Anderson ran across his marker before sending a low shot into the corner of the net. Kingussie were playing some nice shinty, using the Mossfield pitch to good effect by playing the ball into spaces and they took their two-goal lead into the break. Whatever was said in the Oban Camanachd dressing room at the interval sparked a response and, with the second half just a minute old, Scott MacMillan played the ball wide to Andrew MacCuish and his knock-down found Daniel Cameron on the run and he stretched to score. Their joy was short-lived though as Ruaridh Anderson got his second on 48 minutes to restore Kingussie’s two-goal advantage. A needless free-hit allowed the excellent Kieran MacPherson to launch the ball forward to Ruaridh Anderson in a wide position. Anderson played the ball into the danger area where substitute Roddy Young, who replaced James Falconer, ran across his marker before striking a low, hard shot into the net for what was a superb finish. The game became a bit scrappy for a spell and Oban Camanachd brought David Lafferty and Ross Campbell on for Aidan MacIntyre and Daniel MacVicar. With 10 minutes remaining, Gary McKerracher came on up front and the switch paid immediate dividends as, just 3 minutes later, McKerracher played the ball off beautifully to Andrew MacCuish whose shot was saved by Kingussie keeper Rory MacGregor but Scott MacMillan was on hand to turn the rebound home. It was now all Oban Camanachd and they almost snatched a point when Scott MacMillan had time to unleash a 25 yarder which was heading for the top corner but Rory MacGregor made an outstanding save with his club. Kingussie deserved the win and it is up to Oban Camanachd to respond when the sides meet in the Artemis Macaulay Cup Final.
Lovat 3 Lochaber 0 Lovat stay second after beating Lochaber 3-0 in their 3pm throw up at Balgate. Lovat’s Lorne MacKay was suspended whilst Martin Mainland was still ruled out through injury but Craig Mainland was named as a substitute, joined on the bench by Drew Howie and Cameron MacMillan. Former Ballachulish player Lewis Bryson started in attack. Lochaber’s Barry MacDonald was free of suspension whilst Donald MacRae also returned. Martin Johnstone, Shaun Nicholson, and Ally MacDonald remained out. Lovat took the lead in the second meeting when Fraser Heath disposed Iain Fyfe at the edge of the box before scoring from close in. It was Heath again to make it 2-0 on 24 minutes. Lochaber keeper Calum MacDonald saved from Greg Matheson but the Lochaber defence hesitated and both Matheson and Heath ran in on the keeper with Heath touching the ball under him and into the net. Craig Mainland made his Lovat return in the second half and his first involvement was a powerful shot from distance which Calum MacDonald saved with his legs but the ball bounced out to Greg Matheson who scored from near the penalty spot to make it 3-0 with 51 minutes on the clock. This match never hit the heights but the win keeps Lovat four points behind league leaders Kingussie but they have played two games more.
Kilmallie 1 Inveraray 0 Kilmallie moved two points away from the relegation zone after beating bottom side Inveraray 1-0 in their 3pm throw up at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie’s Innes Blackhall missed out through suspension but Michael Rodger returned to the squad. Inveraray were badly hit by suspension. Lewis Montgomery served the final match of a three-match ban; player / manager Ruaraidh Graham and Allan MacDonald were also banned. The only goal of this tense encounter came on 74 minutes when Kilmallie skipper Liam MacDonald struck a superb back-hand shot from the wing which rose into the top corner of the net. However the hosts had to rely on an excellent Shane Gillies save to take both points. The keeper did very well to turn away Fraser Watt’s effort from a free-hit. The results mean Inveraray remain at the bottom of the table with six points from thirteen games, Lochaber have seven points from fourteen matches which Kilmallie have now notched nine points from their thirteen fixtures to date.
Kyles Athletic 1 Kinlochshiel 4 Kinlochshiel go third in the table after beating Kyles Athletic 4-1 at Tighnabruaich. Kyles were again without Callum Millar, Donald Irvine, Scott MacDonald, Grant Irvine and Paul MacArthur in their starting line-up. Kinlochshiel remained without Finlay MacRae, Jordan Fraser and Keith MacRae whilst former Beauly and Scotland U17 keeper Josh Grant made his debut in goal. Andrew MacKenzie started at wing centre. John MacRae opened the scoring on 10 minutes with a turn and a good low strike from the left. John MacRae then turned provider on 40 minutes when he got onto a long ball forward which he flicked over Roddy Macdonald. Kyles keeper John Whyte came running from his goal but Scotland U17 cap Duncan Matheson got a touch on the ball to take it over the line to make it 2-0 at the break. John MacRae got his second on 59 minutes when he gathered another long ball before spinning Roddy Macdonald and beating the advancing keeper. Kyles pulled a goal back through substitute George Thomson on 72 minutes when he finished from the edge of the D on the left, low across the keeper and into the net. Referee David Mitchell awarded ‘Shiel a penalty with 10 minutes remaining after Duncan “WD” MacRae was brought down inside the box. Duncan “DA” MacRae sent the penalty low, through the keeper’s legs, to make it 4-1. Next up for Kinlochshiel is a home clash with Caberfeidh which will take place at their new pitch at Reraig whilst Kyles have a derby at Inveraray.
Mowi National Division Oban Celtic 2 Fort William 5 League leaders Fort William maintained their 100% record in the league, and are on the brink of clinching promotion, following their 5-2 win over Oban Celtic 5-2 at Ganavan. Oban Celtic’s Craig MacMillan started a five-match suspension whilst Fort William’s Lewis Morrison served a one-match ban for passing through the disciplinary points threshold. The opening 5 minutes had a huge influence on the final outcome of this game and, unfortunately for Oban Celtic, they just didn't start. With the game barely a minute old, a ball out of Fort defence found Lachie Shaw free of his marker and he shot goalwards. The keeper slipped as he came out to save and the ball ended up in the net. A couple of minutes later, two home defenders went for a ball played into the heart of the Celtic defence. The players collide and the ball fell for Arran MacPhee who ran it in from the left, past a defender, before beating the keeper to make it 2-0. Fort William went 3-0 up when shy out on the left was picked up by Arran MacPhee who turned his man, cut in, and shot from 20 yards out. The Celtic back-five were at sixes and sevens at this stage with the contest only 5 minutes in. Oban Celtic then settled into the game though and there were a couple of chances at both ends before, on 20 minutes, George MacMillan’s shy on Celtic’s left found Lennon Campbell who held the ball up before playing Ross MacMillan through and he netted with a 20 yard shot. This spurred Celtic on and Lennon Campbell, Ross MacMillan and Daniel MacMillan all came close to scoring before the Fort struck again. This time Jack Fraser did the damage with a well-struck half-volley from the edge of the D which made it 4-1 with 34 minutes played. Celtic again went close 4 minutes later. Ross MacMillan was fouled 25 yards out on the right. Andy MacDonald found Lennon Campbell from the free-hit and he drove just over the bar from 20 yards on the right. The second half was just 3 minutes old when Arran MacPhee completed his hat-trick. MacPhee collected a long ball before neatly turning his man and placing a shot across the keeper into the corner of net. Celtic still creating good chances; Daniel MacMillan ran through, beating two defenders to go one-on-one with the keeper but shot narrowly wide and, minutes later, Ross MacMillan turned his man from a precise Jamie Anderson pass, gaining a couple of yards 25 yards out, but he fired his effort over the bar. Midway through the second half, Neil Carmichael found Ross MacMillan who tormented two Fort defenders before picking a pass to Lennon Campbell but his strike was well-saved in the air by keeper Paul MacKay. However rebound came out to Ross MacMillan who volleyed the ball home to make it 5-2 with 65 minutes gone. Celtic were now a vastly different team to the one that started, limiting Fort William to few opportunities. The home midfield trio of Neil Carmichael, George MacMillan and Jamie Anderson were tireless. Anderson was replaced with 10 minutes left along, with Andy MacDonald, for Scott Mossman and John Douglas, but Celtic were not able to add to their tally. The nearest they came was another one-on-one between Lennon Campbell and keeper MacKay as well as narrow misses for Ross Campbell and Daniel MacMillan. It’s another win for Fort William though and their remarkable winning league run stretches to eleven matches. They are hot favourites for the title with three matches remaining and a win at home to Glenurquhart on Saturday 10 August 2019 will guarantee promotion to the Mowi Premiership.
Glenurquhart 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Glenurquhart and Glasgow Mid Argyll look sure to battle it out until the end of the season for a promotion spot as GMA took the spoils with a 2-0 victory from their 3pm throw up at Blairbeg. GMA showed their early intent in the opening minute as Mark Bain knocked down Iain McLay’s ball from the left and Calum McLay touched the ball in the air before volleying into the net. The Glen rallied following this set-back but the GMA defence was in no mood to give anything away. Glen keeper Stuart MacKintosh saved well from Calum McLay shot which was heading for the top corner of the net and the visitors took their 1-0 lead into the break. The Glen came back into it from the restart but the GMA defence remained solid. Calum McLay sealed the win on 76 minutes when he turned home a rebound after Iain Luke’s initial shot was saved.

There was a delay at the start of the second half when referee Steven MacLachlan was caught in the face by a swinging caman from the throw up. Newtonmore defender Declan Brannan would dash off after the game to be an unused substitute for the first team later in the afternoon. On 16 minutes, some good inter-passing left Calum Stewart in space at the edge of the box and he placed the ball past the keeper to give ‘More a 1-0 lead. When the ball broke to an unmarked Calum Stewart on 28 minutes, he fired a powerful shot from distance into the net. Lovat’s Ryan Ferguson pulled a goal back on 38 minutes. After good pressure from the Lovat forwards, a clearance came to Ferguson on the right and he had time to tee the ball up before sending a 25 yard drive into the net. Finlay Ogilvie had had a quiet first half but he netted with a good strike from wide on the left on the stroke of half-time to put the sides on level terms at the break. ‘More introduced Scott Campbell at the break and he did well to hold the ball up until Calum Stewart ran to the edge of the box. Campbell played a perfectly weighted pass to Stewart who completed his hat-trick with a low shot past an unprotected keeper Ronan MacMillan and the visitors led 3-2 with 49 minutes played. However Lovat drew level once more on 61 minutes when Raymond Rennie, with his back to goal, twisted back and forth before spinning and hitting a powerful shot into the net to make it 3-3. The outcome remained in the balance until the final 12 minutes when Ryan Ferguson put Lovat ahead for the first time in the match with a shot from distance, Just a couple of minutes later, substitute Jamie Matheson capitalised on a rare Andrew Buchan slip to score from close in. Lochside Rovers were missing Evan MacLellan who suffered a nasty hand injury in the previous weekend’s HIS Sutherland Cup Final win over the Lovat second team. Gavin Stobbart and captain Jordan Kerr provided experience in defence. John Mackenzie was called into action in the first minute when he tipped over a fierce drive from Lewis Buchanan. However it wasn’t long before Lochside took the lead when Ruaraidh Horne hit a looping shot that deceived the Inveraray keeper to make it 1-0 on 12 minutes.
