Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup – Second Round (Replay) Lovat 0 Newtonmore 3 (After extra-time) Newtonmore are through to the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup quarter-finals after ousting Lovat 3-0 after extra-time in their second round replay at Balgate. Lovat’s Martin Mainland was free of suspension but he was ruled out after picking up an injury in training, catching his studs on the surface, and Lovat will hope that ligament damage isn’t confirmed. Callum Cruden was sidelined as he served the final match of his three-game ban. Greg Matheson recovered from an injury picked up in the previous weekend’s league draw with Kilmallie and Duncan Davidson returned to the starting line-up. Chris Johnston, Ryan Ferguson and Raymond Rennie were on the bench with the latter two having played 120 minutes for the second team earlier in the day. Newtonmore’s Glen MacKintosh was unavailable as he attended a wedding abroad whilst Conor Jones was out following his head knock in the previous weekend’s cottages.com MacTavish Cup Final win over Glenurquhart. However defender Craig Ritchie recovered from a knock picked up in that game whist Drew MacDonald also started as did Andy MacKintosh with a heavily strapped ankle. Fraser MacKintosh, Ewen Fraser and Duncan Gorman made up the bench. Lovat started well and Greg Matheson had chance when he ran onto through ball and he tried to beat Newtonmore keeper Kenny Ross on his right side but the ball went just the wrong side of the post. Marc MacLachlan's rocket-shot from wide on the left on 26 minutes was well-saved with his hand by Kenny Ross. At the other end, Iain Robinson had some strikes at goal without testing the keeper. Then Drew MacDonald went close with his low shot from the right flying across goal and shaving the far post. ‘More’s Jamie Robinson was pushing forward from midfield during the final 15 minutes of the first half and although Kenny Ross was the busier of the two keepers, both defences were also solid and there were no goals during the first 45 minutes. The opening 20 minutes of the second half was even. However Lovat then lost Craig Mainland on 65 minutes following what seemed an innocuous coming together with Newtonmore’s Drew MacDonald as they both went for a ball in the middle of the park. Mainland was taken to the side of the park to await an ambulance. Chris Johnston came on with Fraser Heath going to half back. When Lovat played a free-hit to Calum MacAulay, his shot from distance was well-saved above his head with his club by Kenny Ross. With around 20 minutes remaining, Newtonmore replaced Jamie Robinson and Iain Robinson with Duncan Gorman and the speedy Ewen Fraser. Gorman used his pace and energy, running up and down the line and ’More were now dictating the midfield. With 15 minutes to go, Ryan Ferguson replaced Duncan Davidson for Lovat. Newtonmore pressed and Ewen Fraser forced a good reaction save with his feet from Lovat goalie Stuart MacDonald. Just on 90 minutes, an ambulance arrived to attend to Craig Mainland and play was stopped as it cut across the park. With the tie a couple of minutes into over six minutes of stoppage time, Rory Kennedy was penalised for a foul on Ryan Ferguson. The ball was played to Calum MacAulay but his strike went just wide of Kenny Ross’ left post. Referee Andy MacLean took the tie into extra-time and ‘More introduced Fraser MacKintosh for Evan Menzies and Lovat’s Greg Matheson went to full centre where he soon needed treatment for a head cut following a challenge with Steven Macdonald. A powerful Ewen Fraser shot from the left on 95 minutes was saved with his chest by Stuart MacDonald. Lovat then took Raymond Rennie on for Chris Johnston as both sides looked to get the edge. Newtonmore broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the extra-time period. Iain Robinson’s ball from the right was only cleared as far as Jamie Robinson who played the ball inside to Michael Russell. Russell’s chipped ball forward was collected by Ewen Fraser with his back to goal and Fraser brushed by Lewis Tawse as he moved the ball to his left before turning and shooting goalwards. His shot took a deflection off the caman of the unfortunate Graeme MacMillan, wrong-footing the keeper on its way into the goal. The holders doubled their lead on 111 minutes. Duncan Gorman played a ball from the left of the ‘More midfield inside to Steven Macdonald. Macdonald’s long diagonal pass forward picked out Ewen Fraser on the left. Fraser’s initial ball inside was blocked but, when the rebound came to him, Fraser ran at the Lovat defence, getting by Graeme MacMillan and Danny Kelly before his low shot beat Stuart MacDonald on his right side. Fraser MacKintosh put gloss on the win on 117 minutes. Steven Macdonald sent a long ball forward following a Lovat hit-in on their left. The ball was played across goal from the right to Duncan Gorman who switched play wide to Ewen Fraser and his ball to the near post was won by Fraser MacKintosh, using his long reach, and he fired home to make it 3-0. Danny Kelly was best for Lovat with Craig Mainland also impressing until his injury. Steven Macdonald caught the eye for ‘More as did their whole defensive unit as well as Michael Russell and two-goal Ewen Fraser. Newtonmore now have home advantage against Skye Camanachd, the only club from out-with shinty’s top flight to reach the quarter-finals, on Saturday 6 July 2019. Newtonmore, who will be concerned by Duncan Gorman’s hand injury, now have home advantage against Skye Camanachd, the only club from out-with shinty’s top flight to reach the quarter-finals, on Saturday 6 July 2019. Lovat and Newtonmore are scheduled to meet again at Balgate this coming weekend, in the Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter-finals.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup – Second Round Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Kinlochshiel 3 Kinlochshiel also made the last-eight of shinty’s blue riband competition after they defeated Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-2 in a hard fought 3pm throw up at Yoker This tie was rescheduled following a bereavement and GMA due Oliver MacRae and Jonnie MacAskill missed the chance to line-up against their former club. MacRae had a broken finger whilst MacAskill began a two-game suspension. Ryan Harrison returned but GMA’s three substitutes all played 90 minutes for their second team earlier in the day. ‘Shiel keeper Scott Kennedy was missing and with his brother Graham Kennedy also unavailable, outfield player Finlay MacRae took over in goal. ‘Shiel got off to a great start as Duncan “WD” MacRae gathered the ball on the wing before blasting a shot high inside the near post. The visitors went for the kill but some good defending, particularly from Ryan Harrison, prevented them adding to their single goal. GMA worked their way into the match though and Iain Luke drew them level with a powerful shot into the top corner of the net on 12 minutes. GMA keeper Robert Dunnings had to look lively as he came off his line to foil Ali Nixon. Kinlochshiel forced a series of corners and they regained the lead on 33 minutes. Keith MacRae got the goal, steering the ball home from the edge of the D to make it 2-1. Whilst ‘Shiel dominated the first half, the second 45 minutes was a more even affair. The hosts switched Jamie McFadyen to midfield and Garry Luke up front and this paid dividends on the hour as Luke’s ball was volleyed across goal by Calum McLay and Mark Bain scored for the second successive Saturday, sending the ball into the bottom corner of the goal to make it 2-2. Both teams went for the winner with Duncan Matheson going close for ‘Shiel at one end whilst Finlay MacRae made a fine stop to deny GMA’s Connor MacLeod at the other. The decisive goal came just 4 minutes from time as the ball was played up to John MacRae who turned and hit an unsaveable shot from around the penalty spot into the roof of the net to make it 3-2. ‘Shiel defended well to see out the closing stages and they will now host Oban Camanachd in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup quarter-finals, with the tie scheduled for Saturday 13 July 2019.
Mowi Premiership Oban Camanachd 2 Kyles Athletic 0 Oban Camanachd beat Kyles Athletic 2-0 for the second successive time at Mossfield. The pitch was in great condition on what was a bright, sunny day and Oban Camanachd manager Stephen Sloss was without Daniel MacCuish but Daniel Madej was fit enough to take a place on the bench where he was joined but Keith MacMillan and Gregor MacDonald. 15 year old Ross Campbell started in attack. Kyles Athletic’s Robbie MacLeod began a two-game suspension following his red card in the 2-0 Artemis Macaulay Cup defeat to Oban Camanachd the previous week. Kyles manager Dunky Kerr started in attack as did Colin MacDonald and Roddy Macdonald. Oban Camanachd’s Aidan MacIntyre had tweaked a calf muscle in training during the week and although he declared himself fit to start, he had to come off after just 3 minutes with Keith MacMillan taking over. Kyles made the better start and they enjoyed the early pressure with Dunky Kerr sending a couple of snapshots wide of target. Oban Camanachd were slow to get going and they made a second change on 20 minutes as Daniel Madej replaced Gary McKerracher in defence. It was Oban Camanachd who took the lead on 23 minutes. A ball from midfield went through Callum Miller’s legs leaving Andrew MacCuish one-on-one with keeper John Whyte. MacCuish opted to cut back and although he scuffed his shot, Daniel Cameron ran in and dived full length, ahead of keeper Whyte, to divert the ball into the corner of the net to make it 1-0. Oban Camanachd were boosted by the goal and there were some good battles all over the field, particularly between Ross Campbell and Scott MacDonald, Daniel Cameron and Andrew King and Andrew MacCuish and Callum Miller. Paul MacArthur was also effective in midfield for Kyles, sending good balls forward. Oban Camanachd added a second just a minute before the break as Andrew MacCuish kept his good scoring run going. Daniel MacVicar’s shot was saved by John Whyte and as Daniel Cameron challenged the keeper for possession, both players ended up on the ground, leaving Andrew MacCuish with an empty net and he took advantage to make it 2-0. The hosts made a good start to the second half with Daniel Cameron and Andrew MacCuish linking up well and Lorne Dickie and Scott MacMillan were good in the middle of the park. Oban Camanachd keeper Cameron Sutherland had to move smartly to scoop away a low, hard Conor Kennedy shot for a corner as Kyles responded. The game went flat for a period but the visitors pressed for the final 15 minutes without working the keeper. 16 year old Oban Camanachd defender Daniel Sloss was outstanding; keeping Kyles danger-man Roddy Macdonald quiet. The win means Oban Camanachd now only trail second placed Newtonmore in the league on goal difference. The sides renew rivalries for a third successive time this coming Saturday in the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final at the Taynuilt Sports Field.
Lochaber 1 Kingussie 4 Kingussie stay out in front in the Mowi Premiership following their 4-1 win over Lochaber at Spean Bridge. Lochaber’s Ryan Johnstone was free of suspension. Savio Genini turned home a rebound from the right of the goal following Ruaridh Anderson’s initial shot to put the Kings ahead on 35 minutes. However Findlay MacDonald scored on 40 minutes to make it 1-1 at the break. MacDonald ran into the box following a shot from Lachlan Campbell which Craig Dawson saved. MacDonald nipped in to take the rebound away from the keeper’s feet before knocking it into the back of the net. Kingussie regained the lead on 55 minutes when Calum Grant turned and played a diagonal ball out of defence to James Falconer in the wing forward position and he turned and hit a 30 yard shot into the net. Kieran MacPherson on the hour and Ruaridh Anderson 10 minutes from time sealel the 4-0 win.
Inveraray 3 Kilmallie 2 Inveraray picked up their first league points of the season, beating Kilmallie 3-2 in their noon throw up at the Winterton. This match brought together the division’s two most recently promoted sides Inveraray’s Robert Wood was free of his ban and he started in defence. Garry MacPherson scored to give Inveraray a 15 minute lead. The goal came following Lewis Montgomery’s shy which landed at MacPherson’s feet and he turned his marker before scoring. However Daniel Stewart replied on 31 minutes to make it all-square at the break. Inveraray got their noses back in front when Allan MacDonald netted on 53 minutes. Lewis Montgomery won a 50-50 challenge and he managed to slip the ball to MacDonald who scored. Kilmallie levelled for a second time with 20 minutes remaining with the ball going into the net off Inveraray defender Robert Wood. Lewis Montgomery got what proved to be the winner on 82 minutes. Allan MacDonald played a through-ball into around the edge of the D where Montgomery tussled with an advancing keeper and a defender and he got just enough of a connection on the ball to get it over the line. Although Inveraray remain bottom of the table, they have got games in hand on Kilmallie and Lochaber who are immediately above them.
Mowi National Division Glenurquhart 2 Fort William 3 The top two sides in the National Division met at Blairbeg in one of the matches of the day where league leaders Fort William recorded an impressive eighth straight league victory, twice coming from behind to beat Glenurquhart 3-2. Glen’s Connor Golabek was passed fit to start in attack. Michael Fraser in defence and Cameron Bremner and Calum Smith in midfield started with Lachie Smith, Andrew Corrigan and Finlay Ralston missing. Fort William defender Ally MacRae recovered from a knock to his arm to start whilst Alexander MacMillan returned, replacing the unavailable Jack Fraser in attack. Fort William almost took the lead after just 3 minutes when a long ball from Calum Shepherd found Lewis Morrison on the right but his shot went narrowly past keeper Stuart MacKintosh’s right-hand post. Glenurquhart took the lead on 28 minutes when Ally MacKintosh found Neale Reid free on the left and he slipped a great ball to Oliver Black on the left and his sweet shot flew past keeper Paul MacKay, beating him by his left post. The hosts should have doubled their advantage on the half-hour when Connor Golabek turned his marker and found Oliver Black free on the left with only the keeper to beat from 15 yards range but he scuffed his shot and Paul MacKay saved before clearing the danger. Paul MacKay then kept his side in touch just 3 minutes later when he made a brilliant save with his stick to parry Neale Reid’s net-bound effort. Fort William levelled with a well-worked goal on 36 minutes. Lewis Morrison and Arran MacPhee showed good movement and MacPhee found the on-rushing Lachie Shaw who sent a back-hand shot screaming high into the net, by the keeper on his left side. A free-flowing first half came to an end with both sets of players looking forward to the break. Glenurquhart regained the lead a couple of minutes after the restart. Calum Smith found Oliver Black on the right and he went into a challenge, freeing up Ewan Brady on the left and he fired a low shot past the keeper to make it 2-1. Glen’s Connor Golabek was having a great battle with Fort full back Mark Grant and he almost stretched his side’s lead on 52 minutes when he turned Grant but Paul MacKay saved his low drive with his stick, clearing for a corner. Calum Shepherd then won possession in the centre and he played the ball forward to Alexander MacMillan who ran at the defence, past two defenders, and although John Barr clipped his heels, referee John Angus Gillies played advantage, and MacMillan slipped the ball past the keeper to make it 2-2. The winning goal came on 65 minutes with Fort William taking the lead for the first time in the match. Glen’s John Barr gained possession on the far right but instead of clearing the danger, he took on Arran MacPhee. MacPhee challenged and pushed Barr away before running diagonally towards the goal and slamming the ball past the keeper to make it 3-2. Fort William could have increased their lead on 72 minutes when they were awarded a penalty. There was a scramble in the D where a home defender, on the ground, prevented a visiting forward from scoring. Calum Shepherd stepped up but hit the penalty straight at keeper Stuart MacKintosh who saved. With just 10 minutes remaining, a good move and cross from Calum Smith found Neale Reid on the D and he flicked the ball towards the goal but Paul MacKay pulled off a terrific save and Ally MacRae cleared the ball for a corner. Glen’s Connor Golabeck unleashed the final shot of the match, 4 minutes into stoppage time, with his effort going wide of target. Both teams played skilful, attacking shinty throughout the match and the game was played in good spirits with referee John Angus Gillies, who referees this coming weekend’s Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final between Kyles Athletic and Oban Camanachd, keeping his cards in his pocket. Glen’s Ewan Brady had a really good match up front whilst Fort defender Ruairidh Shaw was commanding at buckshee back, Calum Shepherd was strong in midfield and Arran MacPhee was excellent up front where he forced John Barr to work hard throughout.
Skye Camanachd 7 Strathglass 0 Skye Camanachd beat Strathglass 7-0 in their 3pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree William MacKinnon and Stewart Grant both returned for Skye, taking their places in midfield, but Iain Nicolson joined James Pringle and James Morrison on the absentee list. Injury also ruled our skipper Josh Fraser and Scott Douglas whilst Hamish Myers and Michael Stokes were also unavailable. Skye took the lead on 8 minutes. Will Cowie went for Ross MacKinnon’s corner from the right but the ball came to John Gillies who swept it into the net. Ross Gordon added a second on 16 minutes. Strathglass failed to clear Stewart Grant’s hit-in from the left and John Gillies found Gordon who scored. John Gillies got his second a couple of minutes later, giving keeper Ally MacAdams no chance as he drove the ball low into the corner of the net following Ross MacKinnon’s hit-in from the right. Skye took full control on the half-hour when a clearance out of the Strath defence came to full centre William MacKinnon 12 yards out and his first-time shot flew past the keeper make it 4-0 at the break. Skye replaced John Gillies with Iain MacLennan at half-time with Gillies feeling a tight hamstring. Jordan Murchison firmly turned home an Iain MacLennan pass on 69 minutes whilst Ross Gordon got his second on 77 minutes when a clearance came to him right of centre and he powered the ball into the net to make it 6-0. Skye could have had more goals with Will Cowie particularly unlucky not to have scored and keeper Ally MacAdams and defenders Donald Fraser and Thomas MacLean did very well for the visitors. Iain MacLennan blasted home a great shot from the right of the D to make it 7-0 and there was only enough time to restart the match before referee Archie Ritchie blew for time.
Bute 0 Beauly 3 Fourth placed Beauly recorded their second successive 3-0 victory, beating Bute 3-0 at the Meadows. Highland Industrial Supplies Sutherland Cup – Semi-Finals Lochside Rovers 4 Newtonmore 1 Lochside Rovers beat holders Newtonmore seconds 4-1 at the Jubilee Park to reach the Highland Industrial Supplies Sutherland Cup Final. With manager Brian MacCallum unavailable, George Easton took charge of the Oban side, assisted by Andy Pearson and Gareth Evans. Lochside Rovers were missing youngsters Ross Campbell and Gregor MacDonald who were called up by Oban Camanachd but Evan MacLellan continued his recovery from injury from the substitutes’ bench. Gavin Stobbart was in goal in place of the unavailable Dougie MacDonald. Newtonmore have a more youthful look to their side this season but they did start Danny Macrae in attack whilst Scott Campbell took a place on the bench. Lochside struck early with Michael MacQueen scoring on just 2 minutes. MacQueen was allowed time and space to lash a 30 yard shot into the roof of the net. Newtonmore settled into the game though and they enjoyed a period of pressure before the inevitable leveller came through Craig MacLeod on 27 minutes with a good finish from the left of the penalty spot, waist-high into the net. Chrissie MacMillan and Danny Macrae were having a good physical battle but Macrae was replaced at the interval by Scott Campbell. Lochside replaced Callum Kirsop with Evan MacLellan at the interval and the midfield of man of the match Blair MacFarlane, flanked by wing centres MacLellan and Iain MacMillan took a real grip of the tie. Lewis Buchanan, who had been moved up front, gave Lochside a two-goal cushion with a quick-fire double on 54 and 56 minutes; one went into the top corner with the other into the roof of the net. Scott Robertson and Jamie MacGillivray were also effective for Lochside, particularly during the second half Michael MacQueen made it 4-1 on 67 minutes with a 20 yard shot from out on the right which flew across the keeper and into the net. Ruaridh Horne came on for Lochside and he held the ball up well and he had two late chances. ‘More threw Danny Macrae back on with 15 minutes remaining but Lochside never looked like losing after their fine second half performance. Ronnie Campbell was the match referee.

Jamie Matheson gave Lovat the edge for a third time on 101 minutes and, crucially, Ryan Ferguson made it 4-2 just a minute later. David MacLennan completed his hat-trick on 112 minutes to make it 4-3 but Lovat stayed in front this time to take a place in the final. Neil Clark put Fort William ahead on 5 minutes when he rifled the ball home from the right of the D with Hamish Shaw and Paul Paterson involved in the lead-up. Cal Brown added a second on 19 minutes, punishing Skye for not clearing their lines after David Grant had saved with his feet. Fort keeper Stuart Disher saved with his feet to deny Taylor Matheson late in the half. The closest Skye came to a goal was a second half strike from substitute Keith MacKenzie which hit the side-netting. Skye keeper David Grant stretched to make a terrific save with his caman, denying Cal Brown a third Fort goal.
Kingussie 2 Glengarry 5 Glengarry kept their title push on track when they beat the Kingussie seconds 5-2 at the Dell. ‘Garry’s Finlay Nicolson started a three-game ban but that didn’t prevent Raymond Robertson on 18 minutes and Nick Dalgety on 26 minutes giving the visitors a 2-0 interval lead. Raymond Robertson got his second a couple of minutes after the restart although Kingussie youngster Michael Slimon pulled a goal back just 60 seconds later. Nick Dalgety got his second on 54 minutes and although Kingussie U17 skipper Joe Donald netted on 66 minutes, Finlay Fraser’s strike on 78 minutes sealed a 4-2 win which leaves ‘Garry three points ahead of Fort William with a game in hand. Aberdeen University 0 Inverness 7 Inverness moved off the bottom of the table after beating Aberdeen University 7-0 at Balgownie. Taynuilt 3 Col Glen 0 Taynuilt had their first league home game for ten weeks when Col Glen visited the Taynuilt Sports Field. The first chance fell for Col Glen after a couple of minutes but Neil McKirdy was crowded out by the Taynuilt full backs on the edge of the D. Taynuilt took the lead with their first real attack on 5 minutes when Craig MacIntyre played a perfect cross to Mark Bergant who shot past keeper Harrison into the net. The rest of the half was end-to-end with Col Glen probably the better team, but half time arrived with Taynuilt just ahead. The second half was only 5 minutes old when Craig MacIntyre turned his marker and ran at the Col Glen defence who stood off him and, from 30 yards; he sent a rocket shot into the top corner of the goal. This seemed to knock Col Glen’s confidence and Taynuilt started to take control of the game. Taynuilt scored their third goal on 65 minutes when that man MacIntyre once again ran at the Col Glen defence before slipping the ball to Zander Kilmurray who shot low past the keeper. Taynuilt hit the post later on through Billy Irving but there was no more scoring and Taynuilt ran out worthy winners. Best for Taynuilt was Craig MacIntyre who had an outstanding game, but there were no failures in a great team performance. Col Glen never really got going in the game but have some promising young players in their squad.
