The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 20 June 2015 | |
21 June 2015 Beauly and Glasgow Mid Argyll will contest the 2015 Balliemore Cup Final whilst Lochside Rovers and the Newtonmore reserves will meet in the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final following the shinty action on Saturday 20 June 2015.
Artemis Macaulay Cup – Quarter Final Inveraray 3 Kyles Athletic 1 Inveraray are through to the Artemis Macaulay Cup last-four after they beat Kyles Athletic 3-1 in their quarter-final tie at the Winterton. 3pm. Forward Euan McMurdo was back for Inveraray after missing last weekend’s league defeat to Fort William through work commitments. Defender John Kennedy was also back after spending a few weeks in the States. Kennedy was given the job of marking Kyles’ danger-man Roddy MacDonald with Nicholas Crawford shadowing the on-form Grant Irvine. Roberto Zavaroni was back for Kyles after missing their last match – the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup win over Kinlochshiel – which was three weeks earlier. Zavaroni started on the bench. Inveraray could hardly have started better as Chris Crawford gave them the lead after just 10 seconds. Roddy MacDonald drew Kyles level on 13 minutes with a cracking strike which gave Inveraray keeper Graham MacPherson no chance. Inveraray’s David Robertson was playing well at full centre against the energetic Davis Zavaroni and Robertson broke forward on 16 minutes to send a stunning strike into the roof of the Kyles’ net to make it 2-1 and Inveraray took that lead into the break. Kyles started the second have well with their centre line coming more into the game. The next goal was going to be crucial and Inveraray got it on 62 minutes. Inveraray wing centre David MacPherson hit a long shy towards the back post. The ball was missed by everybody and Euan McMurdo raced in to stroke the ball past keeper John Whyte to make it 3-1. Kyles were back in the tie just a couple of minutes later. Inveraray goalie Graham MacPherson had time to clear his lines but an uncharacteristic error gave Gordon Whyte the chance to score to make it 3-2. This made for a tense last quarter but the Inveraray defence, superbly marshalled by John Kennedy, was strong and the Winterton side deserved their place in the last four. Inveraray were on their game and they will now face Oban Camanachd in the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals. Kyles will have better days and their thoughts will now turn to next weekend’s Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final against Oban Camanachd at the Taynuilt Sports Field.
Balliemore Cup – Semi Final Kilmallie 3 Beauly 4 (after extra-time) The Balliemore Cup semi-final between Kilmallie and Beauly at Craigard was always going to be a close affair and that’s the way it turned out as it took an extra-time period to settle the outcome with Beauly eventually running out 4-3 winners. The sides had already met three times this season and they had one draw and a win apiece to show for their efforts. Kilmallie saw full back Allan MacDonald and buckshee back Peter Carmichael return for this game. However keeper Shane Gillies was missing so Seb MacMillan took over between the sticks. Kilmallie had Craig MacIsaac available for this 2pm throw up but he will miss next week’s Artemis Macaulay Cup tie with Newtonmore because of a bookings points accumulation. Beauly’s Jamie MacLennan returned after an injury stricken spell on the sidelines. However Calum Morrison and Ryan MacKay were missing. Beauly took the lead on 6 minutes when Barrie MacDonald hit a shot from midfield which eluded keeper MacMillan and the ball nestled in the back of the net to make it 1-0. Kilmallie weathered some early Beauly pressure and then started to ask questions of the Canal Parks side’s defence with Michael Rodger twice coming close to conjuring up a leveller. The equalising goal came on 38 minutes with Ryan Stewart forcing the ball home to make it 1-1 after a goalmouth scramble. Beauly introduced two of their MacTavish Juvenile Cup winning side at half-time with Andrew Morrison replacing Ross Forbes and Sandy Elrick taking over from Colin MacDonald. Kilmallie made a bright start to the second period with John Stewart forcing a Josh Grant stop and Liam MacDonald sending a shot over the top of the bar. The second half was just 6 minutes old when Kilmallie defender Peter Carmichael was shown a straight red card by referee John MacGregor following a clash with Sean Stewart. Martin Stewart dropped back into defence for the Blues. Kilmallie were not for folding though and Ryan Stewart put the ball high into the Beauly net from close-range on 62 minutes and his second goal put his side 2-1 ahead. The tie continued to swing from end to end and Conor Ross controlled a ball from the left before unleashing a forceful drive past keeper Seb MacMillan which made it 2-2 with 73 minutes played. Beauly goalie Josh Grant did well to foil Michael Rodger from point-blank range as both teams knew the next goal could win the tie. The contest became eleven versus eleven when Beauly’s Jamie MacLennan was shown a straight red carded following a tussle with John Stewart with just seconds of the regulation 90 minutes remaining. Referee John MacGregor took the tie to an extra-time period and there was plenty more action to come. Beauly went back in front on 97 minutes. Beauly had used their shys as a great weapon all afternoon and Marc MacLachlan, who has a previous Balliemore Cup winner’s medal from his time at Strathglass, collected one such dead ball before turning and sending a shot from a tight angle over goalie MacMillan’s shoulder into the net to make it 3-2. Beauly gave themselves a two-goal cushion on 100 minutes when full centre David MacLean burst forward from midfield and although goalie MacMillan attempted to save MacLean’s shot with his feet, the ball spun high into the net to make it 4-2. Kilmallie were dogged though and with just 7 minutes remaining, Liam MacDonald lost his marker and latched onto a ball forward and he slipped the ball past the advancing Josh Grant into the net to make it 4-3. Kilmallie threw everything at Beauly in the closing stages but they couldn’t restore parity so Beauly, after losing out in three previous Balliemore Cup Finals, have the chance to make it fourth time lucky.
Inverness 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll will meet Beauly in the 2015 Balliemore Cup Final after they beat Inverness 3-0 at the Eilan. Davie Glass was free of suspension for Inverness and Somhairle MacDonald was back in the forward line after injury. GMA were without Finlay MacMillan who was on holiday and the injured Craig Anderson. GMA went ahead on 28 minutes with the ball going into the Inverness net off defender Fraser Stoddart. This was the only goal of the first half but the Glasgow side doubled their lead on 62 minutes with Andy Mathie getting the goal. When Ben Dalgety made it 3-0 on 69 minutes, GMA were in a comfortable position and they now have the chance to win the intermediate trophy for the first time. Inverness will regret that they chose one of their biggest games of the season to put in one of their poorest performances of the term. Archie Ritchie was the match referee.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup – Semi Finals Fort William 3 Lochside Rovers 4 Lochside Rovers edged out the Fort William second team by the odd goal in seven in their semi-final tie at Jubilee Park. Iain MacMillan drew first blood for the Oban side with a goal after just 4 minutes. However Fort William responded in the best possible way as goals from Duncan Rodger after 32 minutes and Dean Williams 5 minutes later put the Fort 2-1 ahead and they held the lead until half-time. When Duncan Rodger got his second goal of the afternoon on 57 minutes to make it 3-1, things looked good for the An Aird side. However Lochside Rovers fought back and Brian MacCallum pulled a goal back on the hour mark. Lochside were level just a couple of minutes later with Michael MacQueen getting the goal to make it 3-3. It looked as if referee Ronnie Campbell was to take the match into an extra-time period only for Lochside’s Daniel MacVicar to pop up on 88 minutes to grab the goal that would take his side into the final.
Inveraray 0 Newtonmore 3 The Newtonmore second team will play Lochside Rovers in the 2015 Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final after they beat the Inveraray reserves 3-0 at Spean Bridge. Calum Stewart gave ‘More the lead with a goal after 28 minutes. Newtonmore clinched the win with two goals in the last 15 minutes. A great strike from John MacKenzie made it 2-0 on 75 minutes and Conor Jones made it 3-0 just 7 minutes from time. John Matheson was the match referee.
Bullough Cup – First Round Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 SCOTS Camanachd 7 Forces side SCOTS Camanachd are through to the Bullough Cup quarter-finals after they beat the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team 7-0 in their first round tie at Yoker. Skye keeper Iain Munro played in attack for the SCOTS and he gave them a 4-0 half-time lead with goals in the first minute, 8, 30 and 42 minutes. Iain Munro got his and the SCOTS fifth goal on 65 minutes. Colin Irving chipped in with late goals on 67 and 69 minutes to make it 7-0. SCOTS Camanachd will host Tayforth in the quarter-finals next month.
Marine Harvest Premiership Fort William 2 Newtonmore 4 Newtonmore put last Saturday’s RBS MacTavish Cup Final defeat behind them as they came from behind to beat Fort William 4-2 in their noon throw up at An Aird. Fort William’s Calum Shepherd and Alexander MacMillan were on holiday and Arran MacPhee and James Tangey were injured. Defender Sean Cameron and forward Bryan Simpson were working. Fort William’s Daniel Stewart was available but he will miss the league meeting with Lochaber at Spean Bridge next Saturday because of a bookings points accumulation. Youngsters Grant Disher, Padraig McNeil and Dylan Fraser were on the substitutes bench. Newtonmore’s Jamie Robinson began a two-game ban following his red card last Saturday. Chris Sellar was free to play but he will next weekend’s Artemis Macaulay Cup tie with Kilmallie because of a bookings points accumulation. Fort William went into the match on the back of four consecutive league wins and they shocked the reigning champions by taking a first minute lead with Gordie MacKinnon getting the goal. Newtonmore regrouped though and Glen MacKintosh levelled on 19 minutes. Fraser MacKintosh put ‘More ahead 5 minutes later and that’s the way it stayed until a goal-glut late in the game. Conor Jones - who scored for the Newtonmore seconds earlier in the day - made it 3-1 with a goal on 77 minutes. Fort William introduced their three young substitutes and Grant Disher crashed a shot back off the crossbar. Chris Sellar added a fourth just 5 minutes from time and although Daniel Stewart pulled back a goal a minute later, Newtonmore went on to win 4-2. Title favourites Newtonmore are on course to make it six consecutive top division titles. They remain two points ahead of second place Lovat and they have three games in hand.
Lovat 2 Oban Camanachd 0 Lovat recovered from last week’s defeat to Kinlochshiel to beat Oban Camanachd 2-0 in their 3pm throw up at Balgate. Home defender Michael MacKenzie was on holiday so youngster Danny Kelly started in his place. Lovat’s Callum Cruden played but he will miss next weekend’s Artemis Macaulay Cup tie with Kingussie because of suspension. Lovat had to make a change after just 3 minutes when Lorne MacKay had to come off with what appeared to be a strain. Fraser Gallacher came on in his place. The early exchanges were even with plenty of endeavour from both sides. However Lovat started to mount a period of pressure and they took the lead after 36 minutes when a ball, partially cleared by the Oban defence, fell between Greg Matheson and Kevin Bartlett, just to the right of the D, and Matheson crashed a shot high into the net to make it 1-0. Euan Ferguson replaced a tiring Danny Kelly for Lovat with around 15 minutes remaining. Lovat substitute Fraser Gallacher clinched the points when he scored just 6 minutes from time to make it 2-0. Stuart MacDonald was the busier keeper with two or three fine saves whilst Oban’s Robert Dunnings made one top drawer stop. This was a physical but not dirty encounter and Lovat remain in second place in the table. Oban Camanachd, for whom Connor Howe was excellent up front, will now focus on next weekend’s Gregor Cameron Consultancy Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final against Kyles Athletic at the Taynuilt Sports Field.
Glenurquhart 5 Kinlochshiel 1 If Glenurquhart co-managers Billy MacLean and Dave Menzies were worried that their charges might have been adversely affected by their RBS MacTavish Cup celebrations from last weekend, they needn’t have been concerned as the Glen recorded their biggest league win of the season, beating Kinlochshiel 5-1 in their 4pm throw up at Blairbeg. Glenurquhart started with the same side which beat Newtonmore last Saturday and Bradley Nixon replace the unavailable James MacPherson on the bench. Duncan “DA” MacRae started for ‘Shiel in place of Nathan Whear who was on the bench after receiving seven stitches in his chin following the win over Lovat seven days earlier. Alasdair Nixon started in place of Fraser MacVicar who was working. The injured Keith MacRae was still out for the Kirkton side. Both teams opened quite strongly and keepers Stuart MacKintosh and Scott Kennedy were both tested early on. There were early chances for both sides as play swung from end to end. A Fraser Heath shot went just past ‘Shiel keeper Scott Kennedy’s right post whilst Jordan Fraser went equally close for the visitors with Glen keeper Stuart MacKintosh carefully watching his effort. Scott Kennedy then had to be at his best to turn a Ewan Brady effort away for a corner. Glen’s Ewan Brady opening the scoring on 22 minutes when, following a well worked move between himself and Fraser Heath, he slammed the ball into the bottom left-hand side of Scott Kennedy’s net to make it 1-0. Kinlochshiel began to probe the Glen goal and on the 29 minutes, Alasdair Nixon picked up a through-ball from Jordan Fraser and he stroked it past the helpless Stuart MacKintosh to make it 1-1. John MacRae forced a good save from Stuart MacKintosh and Mark MacDonald just failed to get on the end of an Oliver MacRae cross and things looked bright for ‘Shiel. We then saw a 3 minute lapse in concentration from Kinlochshiel which cost them the match. First, the visitors missed chances to clear their lines and Neale Reid waltzed through the Red’s defence and he poked the ball through Scott Kennedy`s legs to make it 2-1 with 39 minutes played. Then, just 2 minutes later, a Ewan Brady shot from distance took a wicked bounce to beat keeper Kennedy to make it 3-1. The home side went 4-1 up from the throw up when Ewan Brady won possession and he played the ball to Fraser Heath who lost his marker and fired a great shot into the roof of the net with 42 minutes played. ‘Shiel regrouped at the interval and they made a good start to the second half and they came close to narrowing the deficit on a number of occasions with Stuart MacKintosh making a particularly good save from a John MacRae bullet-shot on 65 minutes. Glenurquhart signed off in style though when substitute Eddie Tembo broke through the visiting defence and put the ball high into the net to make it 5-1 and round off a good team display. The final winning margin was tough on Kinlochshiel and their 3 minutes of madness at the end of the first half cost them dearly.
Kingussie 1 Lochaber 2 Kingussie and Lochaber met for the fourth time this season with the Spean Bridge side winning 2-1 at the Dell. Lee Bain played for Kingussie but he will be missing during the weeks ahead as he will be abroad. Zandz Ferguson remained out through injury for Lochaber but Neil MacDonald and Lachlan Campbell were back and they started on the bench. Lachlan Campbell replaced Brennan MacDonald mid-way through the first half. The sides had drawn 0-0 at Spean Bridge last weekend and there were no goals during the first 45 minutes of this encounter either. However the second half was just a minute old when Kevin Ferguson put the Spean Bridge side ahead. Shaun Nicolson made it 2-0 with a wonderful individual on 56 minutes. Nicolson beat three or four Kingussie players on a weaving, solo run before slipping the ball past Craig Dawson to make it 2-0. Kingussie’s Savio Genini pulled a goal back on 78 minutes but Lochaber deserved the victory and Kingussie’s best players were at the back where keeper Craig Dawson and defender Lee Bain were excellent. Lochaber now join Kyles Athletic, Kinlochshiel and Kingussie on nine points although they have played more games than the other three sides.
Marine Harvest National Division Skye Camanachd 12 Ballachulish 0 Skye Camanachd were back in league action as they beat an under-strength Ballachulish side 12-0 at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Skye boss John MacLeod made three changes to the squad which beat Beauly in the SSE Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup a fortnight earlier. Allan MacKinnon was suspended whilst Stewart Grant returned to the Skye second team and Neil MacVicar was working. Danny Morrison was to return after a fortnight on holiday but he was a late call-off so Aonghas MacDonald took up a place on the bench. Kenny MacLeod and Iain Nicolson were both back from injury. Ballachulish manager David Wilson was without the injured John MacDonald. Alan Clark, Scott Rodger, David Malcolm, Stuart Robertson, Andrew MacDonald and Grant MacKenzie were also missing and Michael Slezas and Scott MacDonald called off on the Saturday morning which meant Ball’ travelled with just thirteen players. The visitors had eight players aged under 18 years in their thirteen player pool and in keeper Cameron Sutherland and defender Cain MacPhee, boss Wilson possesses two of shinty’s bright young talents. David Campbell was available but he will miss his side’s next game because of a bookings points accumulation. Skye made the breakthrough came on 10 minutes. David MacInnes won possession in the Skye midfield and he found Jordan Murchison who played a first time ball to Will Cowie on the Skye left. Cowie broke down the Skye left and crossed for Kenny MacLeod. Balla’ defender Stewart Carmichael looked to have initially thwarted MacLeod but the Skye forward won the play back and slipped it to Kenny Campbell who scored from close range to make it 1-0. Skye doubled their lead on 13 minutes. Gilleasbuig MacDonald played a free-hit over the top of the Balla’ defence and Kenny Campbell collected possession on the Skye right. Campbell played the ball low across the goal and Will Cowie swept it into the net to make it 2-0. Will Cowie made it 3-0 on 19 minutes when he collected a clearance out of the Balla’ defence and he sent a blistering drive into the net from 20 yards. Jordan Murchison was given too much space on 34 minutes and he got Skye’s fourth goal with a great low shot from distance 4-0. Skye went 5-0 up with the goal of the game following a great flowing move. Iain Murray found Kenny MacLeod on the Skye right who played the ball to Chris MacLennan. He passed in-field to Kenny Campbell who played in Jordan Murchison and the move ended with Will Cowie supplying the finishing touch to complete his hat-trick. Jordan Murchison scored again on 43 minutes to make it 6-0 half-time score. Play followed the same pattern in the second half. Will Cowie made it 7-0 with his fourth goal on 47 minutes. Another rocket from Jordan Murchison a couple of minutes later made it 8-0 and completed Murchison’s hat-trick. Skye substitute Iain Nicolson scored his first goal since his return to the Skye first team on 62 minutes when Jordan Murchison waltzed through the Balla’ defence and he unselfishly squared the ball to Nicolson to fire into the empty net to make it 9-0. Another great strike from Murchison made it 10-0 on 66 minutes and took his personal tally to four goals. Kenny MacLeod, who had earlier come off, was re-introduced on 74 minutes, and he an instant impact with 20 yard low drive into the corner of the net a minute later which made it 11-0. Iain Nicolson rounded off the scoring when he made it 12-0 on 82 minutes with a fine strike from 20 yard that gave Cameron Sutherland in the Balla’ goal no chance.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Lovat 0 Beauly 2 Visitors Beauly took the honours in the reserve team derby against Lovat which was brought forward to Friday 19 June 2015 with a 7pm throw up. This match would have been a strange experience for young Lovat captain. He played with several of the Beauly players last weekend in their MacTavish Juvenile Cup winning team as Lovat don’t have a side at U17 level but now his was playing directly against them. The first half ended goalless but Peter Dickson put Beauly ahead on 64 minutes. Daniel Lamont made it 2-0 on 76 minutes to give the Greens a deserved win. Their young forward line was led well by the experience Martin Davidson who held the ball up well. Seventh place Beauly narrow the gap on sixth place Kinlochshiel to a single point and the Braeview Park side have two games in hand.
Kinlochshiel 0 Glenurquhart 2 With their first teams meeting at Blairbeg later in the day, the Kinlochshiel and Glenurquhart second teams clashed at Kirkton with the Glen winning 2-0. The home side had an early chance to go in front but Allan MacDiarmid missed the target from the spot. Glenurquhart went in front on the half hour mark with the ball entering the ‘Shiel net off home player Neil Fraser who was trying to clear a high ball into the area. ‘Shiel goalie Iain Cameron made a great save before the break to prevent the visitors doubling their advantage. ‘Shiel lost Douglas Campbell through injury early in the second half. The ensuing reshuffle saw former Kinlochshiel first team keeper taking the field at full forward – his first out-field appearance in a couple of decades. Ally MacRae and Kenneth Loades also had to go off injured for Willie MacRae’s side. And that’s the way it stayed until the final minute when Calum Miller made it 2-0 to clinch the points. Third place Glenurquhart now draw level on points with second place Newtonmore but they have played a game more.
Kingussie 6 Lochcarron 2 Lochcarron returned to action after a six week absence and they headed for the Dell to play the Kingussie second team in a noon throw up. The visitors travelled with just thirteen players and they eventually went down 6-2. Kingussie took advantage of Lochcarron’s recent inactivity when Kevin Thain gave them the lead in the opening minutes. Russell Menzies made it 2-0 on 18 minutes and he and Thain traded goals with Thain getting his second on 26 minutes and Menzies doing like-wise on 31 minutes to make it 4-0. Kevin Thain completed a first half hat-trick on 40 minutes to make it 5-0. Russell Menzies also completed his hat-trick with a goal on 67 minutes. A late rally from Lochcarron saw them pull two goals back through Peter Mackenzie on 82 minutes and Neil Arnott on the stroke of full time. Kingussie now rise above Strathglass to go fourth in the league.

His team-mate Andrew Wilson started a two-match suspension following his red card against Lochside Rovers last weekend. Oban Celtic’s Neil Carmichael was free of his suspension. Oban Celtic gained an early advantage with goals from Donald Campbell on 17 minutes and Daniel Madej just 6 minutes later. However when referee Graham Cameron pointed to the penalty spot 4 minutes from the break, Strachur’s Iain Wilson stepped up to make it 2-1 at half time. Donald Campbell got his second on 53 minutes to make it 3-1 to the visitors. A second from Daniel Madej on 73 minutes made it 4-1 and Oban Celtic’s delight was confirmed when Donald Campbell completed his hat-trick to make it 5-1 just 5 minutes from time. Oban Celtic stay in fourth place in the table but they have games in han on all the sides above them.
Aberdour 3 Glenorchy 1 Aberdour recorded just their second league win of the season as they beat a depleted Glenorchy 3-1 at Silver Sands. Kevin Latimer steered the ball into the Glenorchy net on 20 minutes to put the home side 1-0 in front. Angus Thorburn added a second just 4 minutes later to make it 2-0. It wasn’t all one-way traffic though and Glenorchy had their chances but a second goal from Angus Thorburn - a blistering drive from the wing forward position - on 35 minutes made it 3-0. The home side continued to press after the restart but they were unable to increase their lead. Glenorchy pulled a goal back on 68 minutes with John Smith netting. However Aberdour comfortably saw out the rest of the game to take both points. Aberdour climb to sixth place in the table.
