The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 20 February 2016 | |
21 February 2016 A number of pre-season shinty friendlies went ahead despite the wintery weather on Saturday 20 February 2016.
Aberdour P Bute P The meeting between the Aberdour and Bute first teams at Silver Sands was postponed earlier in the week.
Aberdour P Bute P The meeting between the Aberdour and Bute second teams at Silver Sands was postponed earlier in the week.
Aberdour 0 Fort William 2 With Aberdour’s double-header against Bute postponed, the Silver Sands side were able to hastily arrange a 1pm throw up with the Fort William first team. And a goal in each half gave the traveling Fort William side a 2-0 win. There was an element of good fortune to the Fort William opener as a Bobby MacMillan strike deflected into the net off Aberdour full back Ruairidh Reid’s caman and over keeper Tom Bowerman. However there was no doubting the An Aird side’s second goal; a screaming 35 yard drive from Calum Shepherd which flew into the net. The winning margin could have been bigger had it not been for some fine goalkeeping from Aberdour’s Tom Bowerman. However on a cold day, the pitch was very heavy which made it difficult for both sides.
Boleskine P Kilmallie P The match between Boleskine and the Kilmallie second team at Smith Park was called off.
Caberfeidh 3 Strathglass 0 The clash between Strathglass and Caberfeidh was originally scheduled for Cannich but was transferred to Castle Leod. Craig Morrison scored his second goal of the pre-season whilst Martin MacDonald and Ruairidh MacLeman grabbed the others. Cabers boss Lee Nicol gave promising second team youngster Ben MacDonald an outing in this one.
Col Glen 1 Kilmory 2 Kilmory beat Col Glen 2-1 in their friendly match at Otter Ferry, looking across Loch Fyne. The visitors led 2-0 at half time with Duncan MacBrayne and Craig Taylor getting the goals. The home side pulled a goal back in the second half through Steven MacKellar but they were unable to get back on level terms.
Fort William P Kyles Athletic P The proposed encounter between Fort William and Kyles Athletic at An Aird was postponed at an earlier date.
Fort William 3 Ballachulish 3 The Fort William second team and Ballachulish drew 3-3 in their 1pm throw up at the Lochaber High School all-weather pitch. Fort William, with Alan Knox was in fine form, played with a strong wind at their backs in the first half. A Mark Fraser goal and an own goal for Fort William and strikes from Lewis Bryson and Malcolm Watson had the sides tied at 2-2. Lewis Clark looked to have won it for the Fort with a great strike which made it 3-2 late in the game. However Ballachulish, prompted by John MacDonald, found a leveller through David Malcolm to earn a share of the spoils.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Kingussie 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll and Kingussie played out a goalless draw in their 1pm throw up at Musselburgh. GMA were without Brian Slattery and Euan Forsyth; both of whom were on holiday. Kingussie travelled without the experience of keeper Craig Dawson, defenders James Hutchison, Lee Bain and Garry Munro and attacker Fraser Munro. It’s fair to say that Kingussie missed their competitiveness and composure at times in the match. Indeed 22 year old Ryan Borthwick was their oldest and most experienced player and he captained the side. Kingussie had the better of the first half with the wind advantage. However GMA had the better of the second 45 minutes and it took a fine stop from 16 year old Kingussie keeper Robert Shiells, making his first team debut, to deny GMA a late winner. The pitch surface was in good condition but a strong wind up and down the pitch meant neither side could settle into their regular pattern of play but this was a good work-out for both teams.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Aberdeen University 3 Aberdeen University beat the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team 3-0 in their 2.45pm throw up at Musselburgh. A hat-trick from the Students’ Stuart Cameron did the damage.
Glenorchy P Oban Lorn P The clash between Glenorchy and Oban Lorn was postponed as Mart Park was flooded.
Glenurquhart 4 Kilmallie 2 Glenurquhart twice came from behind to beat Kilmallie 4-2 in their 1.30pm throw up Blairbeg. Glenurquhart were missing Eddie Tembo and they had Lewis MacLennan at full back and John Barr at buckshee back. Kilmallie travelled without the influential Liam MacDonald but new signing Duncan Rodger was in attack. Conditions were slippery underfoot and it was Kilmallie who went in front thanks to a great 20 yard drive from Michael Rodger which flew past keeper Stuart MacKintosh into the top corner of the net. Neale Reid levelled for the Glen only for Michael Rodger to get his and Kilmallie’s second goal of the game to make it 2-1. Glenurquhart drew level again, this time through Michael Fraser who made it 2-2. The Glen attack of buckshee forward David Smart along with Fraser Heath, Neale Reid and Michael Fraser looked sharp and a Connor Golabek goal and another from Michael Fraser sealed the 4-2 win.
Inverness P Kinlochshiel P The second team match between Inverness and Kinlochshiel at the Bught Park was a Saturday morning postponement
Inverness P Kinlochshiel P The meeting between the Inverness and Kinlochshiel first teams at the Bught Park was initially given the green light on Saturday morning. However the game was postponed later in the morning as allowing the game to go ahead would have caused too much damage to the pitch.
Kingussie P Strathspey Camanachd P An overnight fall of snow put paid to Kingussie and Strathspey Camanachd’s attempts to play a 2pm throw up at the Dell.
Lochaber 1 Newtonmore 2 A Saturday morning pitch inspection ruled the Eilan unplayable so the match between Newtonmore and Lochaber was switched to Spean Bridge with a 1pm throw up. Glen MacKintosh got the opener for Newtonmore and their second came courtesy of a low Conor Jones shot which deceived Lochaber keeper Calum MacDonald at his near post. Ben Delaney pulled a goal back for Lochaber but Newtonmore stayed in front to win. This was a stuffy encounter and there were some impressive young players on display from both clubs.
Lovat 4 Glenurquhart 2 The home side were 4-2 winners as the Lovat and Glenurquhart second teams met in a 1pm throw up at Balgate. Two scorching strikes from Rory Campbell and a Danny Kelly double counted for Lovat with James MacPherson and Callum Miller getting the Glenurquhart goals. A major plus for Lovat was a 20 minute appearance from Scotland U21 cap Graeme MacMillan who has been out for close to a year and a half with a broken leg. Archie Ritchie was the match referee.
Oban Celtic P Inveraray P The encounter between Oban Celtic and Inveraray was postponed on Friday afternoon as Mossfield failed a pitch inspection.
Skye Camanachd P Beauly P The match between Skye Camanachd and Beauly was originally scheduled for Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. However Skye’s pitch was deemed unplayable on Thursday afternoon and the game was switched to Braeview Park. Beauly’s pitch was only just playable on the Friday afternoon so, with a terrible weather forecast for the following day, it was thought that an early decision and a postponement was the best outcome.
Taynuilt P Glengarry P The game between Taynuilt and Glengarry was postponed as the Taynuilt Playing Field was unplayable.
