The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 13 July 2019 | |
14 July 2019 Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic confirmed their places in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup semi-finals and Fort William and Glasgow Mid Argyll reached the Liberty British Aluminium Balliemore Cup Final following the shinty action on Saturday 13 July 2019.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup – Quarter Finals Kinlochshiel 1 Oban Camanachd 2 Oban Camanachd extended their winning run to a remarkable eleven matches, twelve if you include a cup walk-over against Col Glen, as they won through to the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup semi-finals after defeating Kinlochshiel 2-1 in their 3pm throw up at Kirkton. Kinlochshiel manager Johnston Gill was away through work commitments. John MacRae and Finlay MacRae both returned to the starting line-up after being resting against Kilmallie last week. However Keith MacRae faces a spell on the sidelines after it was confirmed he suffered a broken bone in his hand in the win over Glasgow Mid Argyll in the last round. Jordan Fraser and Fergus Dobson were on the bench. Oban Camanachd’s Aidan MacIntyre failed to recover from a calf injury whilst Daniel MacCuish was still out with a hand injury. There was a starting place for Keith MacMillan. There was a doubt around Andrew MacCuish’s availability as he and Emma expected a new arrival but he was able to take his place in the squad as son Nathan made his appearance during the week. Oban Camanachd won the toss and opted to play down the slope in the first half. Oban Camanachd opened the scoring on 14 minutes. Full centre Lorne Dickie came deep to win the ball in the defensive corner area and he sent the ball forward to Scott MacMillan who was fouled in midfield. MacMillan picked himself up to take the free-hit, launching the ball up to Andrew MacCuish who tussled with Paul MacRae. MacCuish took a couple of swings at the ball and as he turned, the ball fell kindly for him and from point-black range; he beat the keeper to make it 1-0. There was a worry in the Oban Camp when Daniel Cameron suffered an accidental knee injury mid-way through the half. He was able to continue but went to full forward with Andrew MacCuish dropping back to half forward. Oban Camanachd claimed for a penalty on 26 minutes. Lorne Dickie found Willie Neilson who knocked the ball on to Daniel Cameron and he evaded a tackle but, as he was falling, he sent the ball goalwards with pace. Scott Kennedy got a foot to the ball and the goal judge flagged for a “kick”. Referee Calum Girvan stopped play but, after a discussion between the officials, play restarted with a throw-up outside the D. Duncan Matheson’s pace was causing the Oban defence problems and Finlay MacRae hit a great drive from distance which dipped just over the bar. Scott MacMillan was carrying on where he left off with his man of the match performance from the Celtic Society Final and he had a great battle with Duncan “WD” MacRae. However MacMillan, aided by Lorne Dickie and Keith MacMillan, started to control the midfield, ensuring the Oban forward line had plenty possession. A strong Daniel MacVicar run just before half-time saw him find Daniel Cameron and his cut-back found Andrew MacCuish who hit the ball wide of the keeper’s right post. Oban Camanachd came close to extending their lead on 48 minutes. Good play from Daniel MacVicar and Daniel Cameron saw the ball spread to Andrew MacCuish and his cut-back came to Willie Neilson whose shot rebounded from the keeper’s right post before being scrambled clear. The ball was played straight back into the danger-area and there was a nasty collision between Andrew MacCuish and Scott Kennedy at the edge of the D. There was a 3 minutes break in play when keeper Kennedy received treatment. Keith MacMillan played the resultant corner to the back post where Andrew MacCuish took the ball down and shifted it to his left side around 18 yards out and, with Paul MacRae racing out to block, MacCuish delivered a devastating drive into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0 with 51 minutes played. ‘Shiel picked themselves up and a shot at goal took a wicked deflection, almost wrong-footing Oban Camanachd keeper Cameron Sutherland but he readjusted and kept the ball out with his chest. ‘Shiel kept pressing and although the visiting defenders were clearing their lines, the ball kept coming back at them. One such clearance came to Donald Nixon on 62 minutes and his superb 25 yard shot went through a crowded goal area and dipped past the unsighted keeper, going high into the net, and it was now 2-1. Oban Camanachd manager Stephen Sloss brought Chrissie MacMillan on for Willie Neilson and put him up against Conor Cormack. Chrissie MacMillan played the ball out wide to Andrew MacCuish who returned the possession to MacMillan but he didn’t strike the ball cleanly and the chance was gone. Lorne Dickie then played the ball wide to Daniel MacVicar. Andrew MacCuish dummied MacVicar’s pass and the ball came to Chrissie MacMillan on the angle at the back post but his half-swing went wide of target. The Oban Camanachd defence of Daniel Madej, Daniel Sloss, Malcolm Clark and Garry Lord dealt very well with the Kinlochshiel attacks but they had to rely on keeper Cameron Sutherland when Ali Nixon ran onto a ball into the goal area and his shot on the run was saved with his feet and turned away for a corner by Sutherland. Andrew MacCuish continued to prove his worth and he went on a mazy run, beating Paul MacRae and getting past keeper Scott Kennedy but, just as he was about to finish, keeper Kennedy stretched in to touch the ball out for a corner. The final whistle saw Oban Camanachd progress as they continue to contest all competitions this season. Oban Camanachd now play Glasgow Mid Argyll in the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals at Mossfield this Saturday. GMA have agreed to a noon throw up so the Oban squad can then head then for the Sutherland Cup Final between Lochside Rovers and the Lovat second team at the Canal Parks. That one throws up at 4pm. Newtonmore meet Kingussie in the other semi-final at Braeview Park, Beauly.
Kyles Athletic 2 Kingussie 2 (After extra-time – Kyles won 4-3 on pens) Kyles Athletic eventually saw off Kingussie on penalties following their 2-2 draw in their Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup quarter-final replay at Tighnabruaich Savio Genini’s late leveller cancelled out Colin MacDonald’s opener as the sides drew 1-1 at the Dell a week earlier. Kyles were still without the injured Callum Miller but Grant Irvine and Donald Irvine both played. Kingussie’s Roddy Young returned and took a place on the bench. James Hutchison was free to play but he misses this coming weekend’s Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-final against Newtonmore after passing through the disciplinary points threshold. Kingussie suffered an early blow when James Hutchison had to leave the field on 8 minutes with a suspected broken finger. Just as he did a week earlier, Kyles captain Colin MacDonald gave his side the lead. The ball came in from the Kyles right and was missed at the edge of the D by the Kingussie defence and MacDonald stole in, losing his marker, and he poked the ball over the line to make it 1-0 after 12 minutes. Kyles player / manager Dunky Kerr made it 2-0 on 24 minutes when he got on the end of Robbie MacLeod’s hit-in to the back post and he flicked the ball into the net. Kingussie introduced forward Roddy Young early in the second half as they tried to get back in the tie. Both sides hit the frame of the goal over the course of the match – Ross MacRae hit the post for Kyles whilst Kingussie’s Roddy Young struck the bar - but it remained 2-0 until 4 minutes from time. It was Savio Genini who got his side back into it as he got onto a ball played through from the centre line and he managed to round his marker to go one-on-one with keeper John Whyte and kept his cool as he slipped the ball home. Kingussie threw everything at Kyles and they found an 88 minute leveler. The ball was played down the left side where Ruaridh Anderson let it run by him down the line. Roddy Young went out wide to collect possession and he squared the ball across to Savio Genini who held it up as Ruaridh Anderson ran across the pitch to the back post. Genini found Anderson who took the ball first time, connecting well on his fore-arm from around 13 yards range, and the ball went into the top left corner of the net to make it 2-2. Extra-time failed to separate the sides so, with no further scoring; referee Lachie Wood took the tie to a penalty shoot-out. Grant Irvine, Paul MacArthur and Roddy Macdonald all converted for Kyles, with home keeper John Whyte twice saving from the spot, before Robbie MacLeod kept his nerve to score from the fifth penalty and Kyles will now play Oban Camanachd in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup semi-finals with the tie scheduled for Saturday 10 August 2019.
Mowi Premiership Newtonmore 1 Lovat 1 Reigning champions Newtonmore missed the chance to move up to second place in the division when they drew 1-1 with Lovat at the Eilan. This was the fifth meeting between the sides this season with ‘More winning all but one drawn match from the previous encounters. ‘More skipper Evan Menzies began a two-match suspension for passing through the disciplinary points threshold. Michael Russell served a one-game ban for the same reason but he would have been ruled out through injury in any case. Ewen Fraser and Owen Fraser both returned to the starting line-up whilst David MacLean returned from injury to join Jamie Robinson Andy MacKintosh on the bench. Lovat’s Lorne MacKay was suspended whilst injury continued to rule out Craig Mainland and Martin Mainland. However Callum Cruden and Danny Kelly both returned and there was a place on the bench for former Ballachulish player Lewis Bryson. With manager Fraser Gallacher unavailable, Jamie Matheson took the side. Lovat threatened on 7 minutes but ‘More keeper Kenny Ross dived in as Calum MacAulay looked set to score. Ross blocked the ball, forcing MacAulay to run away from goal to retrieve the rebound and his effort went past the post. Lovat keeper Stuart MacDonald seemed uncomfortable with what looked like a back problem and Daniel Grieve took over with goal-hitting duties. ‘More won possession in midfield following one hit-out and the ball was delivered to Glen MacKintosh who saw his powerful shot saved with his legs by Stuart MacDonald. Ewen Fraser and Iain Robinson both raced in on the rebound with Fraser scoring to make it 1-0 with 14 minutes on the clock. Newtonmore went on to enjoy a period of pressure where they could have added to their score on three separate occasions. Daniel Grieve tried to cut out Iain Robinson’s ball to Glen MacKintosh on 18 minutes and MacKintosh’s rocket-shot clattered off the outside of the post. Conor Jones, who had been pushed up front, and Ewen Fraser both passed up chances as ‘More finished the half the better team. Lovat brought Lewis Bryson on for Chris Johnston at the interval. Bryson joined the attack with Duncan Davidson going to wing centre. Lovat fielded Greg Matheson in the other wing centre position, where he was very effective, and Matheson made it 1-1 on 55 minutes. Calum MacAulay’s ball from the right was only cleared as far as Matheson and his shot from over 30 yards out beat the keeper who did get a hand to the ball. ‘More had introduced David MacLean in midfield whilst Andy MacKintosh came on for Owen Fraser to try and nullify Greg Matheson’s threat. Indeed both managers continued to make changes throughout the half as they tried to give their respective sides the edge. Jamie Robinson, who earlier replaced a limping Glen MacKintosh at full forward, hit the bar with just 6 minutes remaining. Newtonmore were well-served by their defensive unit of Rory Kennedy, Craig Ritchie, Iain Richardson and Steven Macdonald as well as Iain Robinson up front. Daniel Grieve, Fraser Heath and Graham MacMillan, who continues to impress in his new defensive role, gave Lovat a solid base with Greg Matheson also influential, particularly in the second half. Second place Lovat are two points behind leaders Kingussie but they have played two games more. Newtonmore are three points off the top with a game in hand on Kingussie. Fourth placed Oban Camanachd are still very much in contention. They are a point behind Newtonmore with the same number of games played.
Caberfeidh 6 Inveraray 0 Caberfeidh pulled away from the relegation zone as they scored three times in each half to beat bottom side Inveraray 6-0 in their 3pm throw up at Castle Leod. Kevin Bartlett was free to play for Cabers but he will miss Saturday’s home meeting with Kyles Athletic after passing through the disciplinary points threshold. Ewen Pilcher returned in goal. Inveraray’s Lewis Montgomery began a three-match suspension whilst Kenny Kirkhope was promoted from the second team after some good recent performances. Two goals in two minutes gave the home support plenty to cheer about as Craig Morrison netted on 12 minutes with Jamie MacKintosh scoring straight after. Kevin Bartlett added a third on 22 minutes and it remained that way until the break. Jamie MacKintosh got his second on 55 minutes whilst Craig Morrison completed his hat-trick with strikes on 60 and 64 minutes. Inveraray’s Ruaraidh Graham was sent off by referee Andy MacLean. The win moves Cabers to sixth in the table, three points above the relegation zone and they have games in hand on most of the teams below them.
Liberty British Aluminium Balliemore Cup – Semi-Finals Fort William 4 Glenurquhart 1 Fort William reached the Liberty British Aluminium Balliemore Cup Final after coming from behind to beat Glenurquhart 4-1 at Spean Bridge. Sean Cameron was still injured for Fort William whilst Glen’s James MacPherson, who scored eight times in his sides last two outings, was holidaying in New York. Glenurquhart struck first as Ewan Brady gave them a 24 minute lead with what was to be the only goal of the first half. The Glen were left to rue several missed opportunities in the first half when Fort William equalised just 4 minutes into the second half. The ball was played across the D and a defensive mistake resulted in the ball being flicked up into the air and Lachie Shaw was first to react with a volley which went into the bottom corner of the net. Shaw went on to complete his hat-trick with two more goals on 61 and 63 minutes. First, Fort William won a free hit 20 yards back from the penalty spot. Jack Fraser played the ball to the left side of the D and Lachie Shaw struck a back-hand shot which went through the keeper’s legs. Then, a low ball in from a Padraig McNeil corner was stopped at the penalty spot by Shaw and, with his back to goal; he turned and fired into the bottom left corner of the goal. Padraig McNeil rounded off the 4-1 win a minute from time. Victor Smith’s shot was well-saved by Glen keeper Stuart MacKintosh and McNeil was first to react to the loose ball, slotting it home from inside the D. Brian MacKay was the match referee.
Strathglass 0 Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll scored three times in the first third of their match against Strathglass to win 3-0 at the Dell. Scott Douglas returned for Strathglass whilst GMA’s Oliver MacRae commenced a three-game suspension whilst Nathan Whear was out following a head-knock. GMA did the damage early in this game with Iain Luke scoring on 12 and 14 minutes. Luke turned a Jamie McFadyen cut-back low into the net for the opener and he then blasted the ball into the roof of the net from 20 yards out. Calum McLay made it 3-0 on 32 minutes when he came deep to gather the ball before firing a fierce shot in off the post. Referee Graham Cameron sent off Strathglass player Scott Douglas for dissent following the award of a home free-hit 5 minutes from time. Robert Dunnings saved well with his feet to prevent Darren Reid pulling a goal back. The 2019 Liberty British Aluminium Balliemore Cup Final between Fort William and Glasgow Mid Argyll takes place at An Aird on Saturday 24 August 2019.
Mowi National Division Skye Camanachd 4 Bute 0 Two of shinty’s island sides, Skye Camanachd and Bute, clashed at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree with the hosts winning 4-0. Skye were missing a whole host of players with Ally MacDonald, John Gillies, Iain Nicolson, James Pringle, Stewart Grant, James Morrison, Ross MacKinnon and Marcus Scott all unavailable. Will Cowie went to full centre and Sam MacPhee debuted at wing centre. Bute were also weakened, travelling with just twelve players and minus a number of regulars including Iain McDonald, Ryan Craig, Craig MacKay, William Boag, Aaron McKirdy and Chris Lawrence. Skye attacked from the throw up and it took two terrific stops form Bute keeper Kevin Queen to keep the match scoreless. First, Queen made a brilliant save with his club, above his head, after Jordan Murchison flicked an Iain MacLellan pass in the air and volleyed the dropping ball goalwards. Queen then did well to turn away Sam MacPhee’s strike from the right which was going in, high to the keeper’s right. Skye made the breakthrough on 14 minutes following some lovely one-touch shinty down the left wing and Daniel Morrison exchanged passes with Iain MacLellan before flicking the ball low into the net. Skye scored a second a couple of minutes later. Sam MacPhee found Daniel Morrison on the right and he played in Ross Gordon and, on his left side, Gordon’s shot went in off the leg of the unsighted keeper. Jordan Murchison then darted into the D to get on the end of Daniel Morrison’s cut-back from the right but his lofted effort came off the off the keeper’s left post. Skye added a third on 19 minutes when Iain MacLellan took Ross Gordon’s pass and beat the keeper with a fierce waist-high shot which went in on the goalie’s left side. The game then went flat for periods with Skye continuing to dominate but Bute never folded, with John MacCallum at full back, 14 year old Calum MacMillan, Scott Harvey and Craig Fisher all doing well at the back. Skye made it 4-0 with 10 minutes remaining as Iain MacLellan grabbed his second goal of the game. Martin Pringle won the ball in midfield, holding off a couple of challenges, to set up the move and when Ross Gordon juggled a ball from Jordan Murchison into MacLellan’s path, he drove home.
Mowi North Division 1 Glengarry 2 Lovat 2 League leaders Glengarry came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with third placed Lovat seconds at Craigard. ‘Garry’s Finlay Nicolson was banned whilst Lovat were without player / manager Jamie Matheson who was with their senior side. Fort William had won two and drawn one from their last three fixtures whilst Skye U14 keeper Calum Nicolson was given his second start in goal. Grant Disher gave the Fort a 7 minute lead and it was an advantage they doubled through Dean Williamson on the stroke of half-time. Grant Disher got his second on 70 minutes and late goals from Alan Knox on 85 minutes and a hat-trick effort from Grant Disher on 90 minutes put gloss on the win.
Caberfeidh 3 Kingussie 2 The Caberfeidh reserves saw off a fight-back from the Kingussie reserves to win 3-2 in their noon throw up at Castle Leod. Caberfeidh’s Martin MacDonald and Kingussie’s Chris Holleysong were both suspended. Ruaraidh MacLeman scored on 34 and 36 minutes to give Cabers the advantage. Mowi South Division 1 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Lochside Rovers 6 Lochside Rovers turned in another sparkling first half performance to beat the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team 6-0 in their noon throw up at Yoker. This was a dress rehearsal for next month’s Bullough Cup Final meeting between the sides and GMA were missing the suspended Ruaraidh MacLeod. Lochside were also missing players. Boss Brian MacCallum went in goals and Ross Campbell was fielded at full forward. Lochside have been starting matches impressively for some time and, with the wind behind them, they did so once more as Ross Campbell on 5 minutes capitalised when keeper Jonathon Oates didn’t get to a long ball forward and the youngster knocked the ball home. Jamie MacGillivray, a minute later, had them 2-0 ahead when he fired into the net from just outside the D. Brian MacCallum made a fine save with his stick to foil Neil Fraser before Jamie MacGillivray, who shows great commitment travelling from Mull for games, got his second on 25 minutes when he lost his marker on the right before shooting inside the post. Michael MacQueen made it 4-0 on 39 minutes with the pick of the afternoon’s goals. A corner from the left was lofted to the edge of the box where MacQueen hammered the ball first-time, over his head and high into the net. 14 year old Innes Jackson, making his first Lochside start, made it 5-0 just a couple of minutes before the break with a low drive from the far post. GMA substitute John McNulty played a couple of dangerous balls into the goal area but the home forwards were unable to take advantage. Lochside were able to give another 14 year old, Louis MacFarlane, his first experience of second team shinty and he didn’t look out of place. Michael MacQueen could have had a hat-trick; seeing a penalty saved with his hand by Jonathon Oates and then smacking a shot on the angle off the post. Ross Campbell rounded off a good team performance when he made it 6-0 just 4 minutes from time.
Inveraray 7 Aberdour 2 League leaders Aberdour suffered their first league defeat of the season, going down 7-2 to the Inveraray seconds at the Winterton. Inveraray’s Andrew McMurdo was free of his ban but Aberdour’s Alec Mitchell was suspended. Inveraray had a bare twelve players to pick from as the Tiree Music Festival accounted for Andrew Fraser, Callum MacDonald and Steven Cameron. Coll MacKay and Gregor Mather were also unavailable so veteran Graham MacPherson took over from the latter in goal. Inveraray’s forward line consisted of the experienced Euan McMurdo, Scott Robertson and Russell MacKinlay as well as odd man out young Campbell Watt. John Smylie, playing for the 35th consecutive season, lined up in defence. Aberdour were delayed in traffic and they also travelled light. Full back Sam Evans was amongst their absentees and there was a place for second team player / manager Roddy MacColl There looked little sign of a shock when Angus Thorburn put Aberdour ahead on 4 minutes. It took a further 10 minutes before ‘Aray were back level, but deservedly so, with Euan McMurdo getting the goal. At this point, some of Inveraray's forward play was a delight to watch and difficult to defend against and Campbell Watt struck on 22 minutes to put the hosts ahead. Aberdour deserve credit for sticking to their task and they always tried to play the fluent shinty of their own but they found the ‘Aray backline standing tall and resolute as Rhys Williams and Colin Campbell gained invaluable experience working alongside John Smylie. The game was effectively over as a contest as Inveraray scored three times within 3 minutes late in the half. A second from Euan McMurdo on 42 minutes, Scott Robertson on 43 minutes and another from Campbell Watt just a minute later made it 5-1 at half-time. Aberdour gave it a good go from the restart but struggled to break Inveraray down with the home centre line getting more involved with John MacKenzie's strong hitting, Allan Cameron's industrial running, youngster Kane Kirkhope controlling proceedings. Graham MacPherson was called into action few times; most notably turning back the years with a stunning reaction save. Russell MacKinlay extended Inveraray's lead on 76 minutes after great inter-play between all four forwards. Aberdour’s reply was almost instant as David MacDougall scored to make it 6-2 a couple of minutes later. Scott Robertson completed the scoring with his second goal of the game on 85 minutes and the Inveraray seconds will hope to build on this result as they play the Kyles Athletic seconds in a rearranged match on Thursday 18 July 2019.
