The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 10 July 2021 | |
11 July 2021 Fifteen fixtures beat the covid restrictions on Saturday 10 July 2021.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup – First Round Northern Section Beauly 9 Inverness 0 Beauly were too strong for Inverness, winning 9-0 in their tie at Braeview Park. Sean Stewart on 10 minutes and Robbie Brindle on 17 minutes had Beauly 2-0 ahead before Sean Stewart’s second strike on 39 minutes made it 3-0 at half time. Robbie Brindle scored twice on 58 and 69 minutes and Beauly finished with a flourish. Youngsters Finlay MacLennan on 73 minutes and Euan MacCormick on 80 minutes made it 7-0 before Conor Ross added an eighth a couple of minutes later. Another promising Beauly youngster, Finlay “Stork” MacLennan rounded off the scoring a couple of minutes from time. Beauly are off to Caberfeidh in the second round this coming Saturday.
Southern Section Inveraray W/O v Lochaber Inveraray were given a walk-over when Lochaber were unable to field a team for their tie at the Winterton. Inveraray now meet Kyles Athletic at the Playing Fields, Tighnabruaich in the second round on Saturday.
Artemis Macaulay Cup – First Round Oban Camanachd 4 Bute 0 Oban Camanachd eventually eased to a 4-0 win over Bute in their 3pm throw up at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd were without Garry Lord whilst Daniel Madej was a late injury call-off with an ankle problem. Lewis Buchanan’s scoring exploits for Lochside were recognised with a starting spot. It took time for Oban Camanachd to finally break down the Islanders but they managed that on 35 minutes when Connor Howe scored from close range. Howe was on hand again from similar range to get his second a minute before the break. The Oban side made changes and half-time with Keith MacMillan and Ross Campbell coming on, replacing Evan MacLellan and Blair MacFarlane, and they strengthened the centre line. A typical Daniel MacVicar goal made it 3-0 on 55 minutes as he turned his marker before firing home form more than 20 yards out. Ross Campbell added a fourth with the goal of the match on the hour. Campbell beat his man and hit a shot from distance with the ball going low into the corner of the net. Innes Jackson was rewarded for his Lochside performances with a debut for the final 20 minutes of the tie.
Oban Celtic 6 Ballachulish 0 Oban Celtic are also through following a comfortable 6-0 victory over Ballachulish in their noon throw up at Mossfield. Oban Celtic were still missing the injured Craig MacMillan whilst Ballachulish missed the experienced John MacDonald and Lorne Brown. Duncan MacDonald was dangerous throughout and he gave Oban Celtic the lead on 17 minutes. MacDonald is finally free of a niggling injury and his side are reaping the benefits as he finished off a break forward. The ball was played up the line to Daniel MacMillan and then on to Ross MacMillan who found Duncan MacDonald and he beat his marker before scoring from outside the D. Oban Celtic forced a corner from the restart and when the danger was only half-cleared, Duncan MacDonald again beat his opponent before making it 2-0 with 19 minutes played. Lennon Campbell took down Neil Carmichael’s long ball from midfield on 35 minutes and he played a one-two with Duncan MacDonald before adding a third whilst Duncan MacDonald scored the goal of the game just 3 minutes later. Ross MacMillan found Daniel MacMillan and MacDonald was coming away from goal as he met MacMillan’s cross and he produced a quite spectacular finish as his reverse overhead volley beat the keeper to make it 4-0. Oban Celtic immediately withdrew Duncan MacDonald to give 15 year old Ewen Campbell a debut with the youngster returning from a thigh injury that had curtailed his season so far. Promising youngster William MacEwan came on for Daniel MacMillan at half-time as Celtic gave youth its chance and MacEwan linked up well with George MacMillan. When Neil Carmichael’s long ball forward wasn’t dealt with, Ewen Campbell cut the ball back to Lennon Campbell who produced a great strike to make it 5-0 on the hour. Young Pearce MacBeth got his chance to shine for the final quarter to the contest as Oban Celtic kept the pressure on the Balla’ goal. Ross MacMillan turned home a rebound after Kenny Michie had saved Ewen Campbell’s initial shot but Campbell was just unable to get out of the D in time and referee Deek Cameron ruled the effort out for offside. The same two players combined once more a couple of minutes from time. On this occasion, Ross MacMillan saw his strike saved by Kenny Michie but Ewen Campbell slipped the rebound past the keeper to notch his first senior goal and make it 6-0. Kenny Michie in the Ballachulish goal made some great saves throughout, particularly denying Ross MacMillan and he did well to turn a Ewen Campbell effort around the post. However Celtic were also guilty of passing up some good chances in front of goal. Andy MacDonald did well at buckshee back for Celtic, mopping up and balls forward from the Ballachulish midfield. Oban Celtic now host Oban Camanachd in the Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter-finals with the tie currently scheduled for Saturday 24 July 2021.
Artemis Macaulay Cup - Quarter Finals Newtonmore 1 Kingussie 3 Kingussie came out on top in the first Badenoch derby of the season, beating Newtonmore 3-1 at the Eilan. Newtonmore’s Steven Macdonald was suspended whilst Kingussie were without Savio Genini and Kieran MacPherson. A tremendous run and finish from James Falconer broke the deadlock on 14 minutes and Roddy Young added a second almost straight from the second half restart. Iain Robinson ran onto Michael Russell’s free-hit to pull a goal back on 52 minutes but Dylan Borthwick turned the ball home from a central position to seal the win in the final minute. The sides meet again this coming Saturday; this time in the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup second round. Thomas Borthwick will miss that one after suffering a knee injury. The sides were also drawn together in last week’s cottages.com MacTavish Cup quarter-finals meaning they meet in all three senior cup competitions. The remaining quarter-final ties see Beauly paired with a visit from Caberfeidh, Fort William hosting Lovat or Glenurquhart and Strathglass at home to Kinlochshiel or Lochaber. The ties are scheduled for Saturday 14 August 2021.
Kyles Athletic 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Kyles Athletic survived a late fright to beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-2 at the Playing Field, Tighnabruaich. Robbie Macleod took advantage of a defensive error to give the hosts a 9 minute lead and Colin MacDonald made it 2-0 at the second attempt on 32 minutes with GMA’s Nathan Whear having to come off after sustaining an injury trying to prevent the goal. When referee Graham Fisher awarded the hosts a penalty on 53 minutes, Robbie Macleod stepped up to score. GMA keeper Jonathan Oates got his hand to the ball but couldn’t keep it out. Just 5 minutes later, it was GMA’s turn from the penalty spot and Craig Anderson carried out his usual efficient job, striking the ball into the top corner of the net to make it 3-1. Matthew Young made it 3-2 at the death with a 20 yard shot which went high into the net but Kyles stayed in front to go through.
Mowi Senior League A Kinlochshiel 4 Kilmallie 2 Kinlochshiel had to twice come from behind before finally seeing off a spirited Kilmallie side 4-2 in an entertaining clash at a sunny Rèaraig Park. Kinlochshiel boss Johnston Gill had a strong squad to choose from with Paul MacRae, David Falconer and Jonnie MacAskill making up the home bench. Visiting manager Martin Stewart was without Calum MacDougall who has an ACL injury which could keep him out for up to a year. Iain MacIntyre, Stephen McAlister and Aaron Sandison were also missing. Kilmallie may have been still smarting from the previous week’s loss to Fort William and they went straight on the attack from the throw up and Ben MacKinnon when hit an early shy from the left across goal, Daniel Stewart fired the ball into the net to make it 1-0 with just a minute played. ‘Shiel suffered a blow when they lost defender Conor Cormack with a hand injury. As Cormack pushed a waist-high ball away, out of defence, he was caught on the hand and was later confirmed to have a hand fracture. Paul MacRae came on as a direct replacement at buckshee back. ‘Shiel started to come more into the game and Shane Gillies saved well with his right hand to deny Jordan Fraser. However ‘Shiel levelled straight from the resultant corner in what were fortunate circumstances. Duncan “DA” MacRae sent the corner in from the left and with Shane Gillies coming off his line to palm the ball away; it deflected off Michael Rodger and into the net to make it 1-1 with 18 minutes played. Kilmallie full back Robbie MacFadyen required treatment just before the half hour but was able to continue. Kilmallie went back on the attack and home goalie Josh Grant did well to palm away Ryan Stewart’s shot and ‘Shiel scrambled the ball away to safety. Shane Gillies saved well with his feet from Ali Nixon and, in first half stoppage time, Keith MacRae spun away from his marker but Michael Rodger was able to clear the danger. ‘Shiel introduced Jonnie MacAskill and David Falconer in place of Jordan Fraser and Ali Nixon at the break. Duncan Matheson was pushed into attack with Falconer assuming his more familiar wing back position. Kilmallie made changes too with Martin Stewart pushing Michael Rodger up to full forward and the switch paid immediate dividends when Rodger put Kilmallie back in front with a well-worked goal on 48 minutes. Lewis Birrell flicked on a Shane Gillies goal-hit to Daniel Stewart who held off a challenge before finding Ryan Stewart on the right. Stewart played a good low ball into the danger area where Michael Rodger slipped his marker to go in on goal and he finished confidently to make it 2-1. However ‘Shiel levelled for the second time just a couple of minutes later. Ali Nixon found Keith MacRae who turned and wriggled away from Robbie McFadyen on the right before running in to score. Jordan Fraser came back on with 20 minutes remaining and he put his side in front for the first time in the match just 60 seconds later when he turned home Duncan Matheson’s ball from the left. Jordan Fraser then turned provider as he beat his man before cutting the ball back to Keith MacRae who finished low into the net to make it 4-2 on 77 minutes. Any chance of a Kilmallie comeback crumbled a couple of minutes later when Stevie Stewart was sent off by referee John Angus Gillies for a rash swing at Donald Nixon. John MacRae was booked for his part in the aftermath. Kinlochshiel made the most of the one-man advantage and Keith MacRae and Jordan Fraser exchanged passes to cut open the Kilmallie defence but Robbie McFadyen was in the right place to clear the ball off the line. The hosts did enough to deserve victory but the win came at a price with Conor Cormack’s injury. Keith MacRae looked much more like his old self up front and Donald Nixon had a great battle with Innes Blackhall. Kilmallie boss Martin Stewart saw a much improved performance from his side with Robbie McFadyen and Andrew Mcalister worked tirelessly at the back with Ben MacKinnon impressing at wing centre.
Fort William P Skye Camanachd P Skye Camanachd triggered a two-week suspension in all shinty activity as a precautionary measure due to a covid spike in the area so their match with Fort William at An Aird was postponed.

Mowi Senior League C There were no scheduled fixtures in Mowi Senior League C.
Mowi North League A Glengarry 3 Fort William 9 Glengarry suffered their first league defeat of the season when the Fort William second team ran out 9-3 victors in their game at Craigard. This was the second time the sides had met this term with ‘Garry winning 3-0 at An Aird a month ago. It started well for the hosts when Raymond Robertson scored after just 2 minutes but the goals started to flow thereafter. Alan Knox on 9 minutes and a quick-fire Cameron Stevens double, first on his backhand on 12 minutes and then after rounding his marker before smashing the ball high into the net on 13 minutes had the Fort 3-1 ahead. Rhys Kennedy got in on the act with a brace on 15 and 35 minutes. His first went low into the corner of the net whilst he caught the ball well for his second and when Graham Campbell added another on 42 minutes with a fierce half-volley, the Fort lead 6-1 at the break. Nick Dalgety beat Fort keeper Stuart Disher to make it 6-2 just 3 minutes after half-time. Fort William kept pressing though and Cameron Stevens completed his hat-trick on 61 minutes when he hit the ball past an advancing keeper Alan Knox completed his hat-trick with goals on 63 and 70 minutes. He took the ball down for the latter before blasting it into the net. Raymond Robertson got his second 4 minutes from time but it was Fort William’s day.
Skye Camanachd P Kinlochshiel P The derby between the reserves and the Kinlochshiel reserves at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree was postponed because of covid restrictions.

Mowi North League C Inverness 3 Beauly 3 The Beauly seconds and the Inverness seconds drew 3-3 at Braeview Park. The visitors looked good for both points when Calum Flynn on 7 minutes, Kyle MacDonald 20 minutes and Calum Flynn on 50 minutes gave them a 3-0 advantage. However Inverness fought back and Steven Bellshaw scored twice and Andy Reid got the other to earn a point from a 3-3 draw.
Strathspey Camanachd 2 Aberdeen University 3 Two goals in two minutes from Donnie MacRae helped Aberdeen University beat Strathspey Camanachd 3-2 in their 2pm throw up at Grantown Grammar School. Robert Shiells gave the hosts a 15 minute lead and although Stuart Cameron equalised on 36 minutes, Calum Miller put Strathspey back in front a couple of minutes later to give his side a 2-1 half-time lead. The match turned just before the hour when Donnie MacRae scored on 58 and 59 minutes to give Aberdeen University their first win in their first match of the season.
Mowi South League A Inveraray 1 Lochside Rovers 2 The meeting between the Inveraray second team and Lochside Rovers at the Winterton was brought forward to Wednesday 7 July 2021 with a 7pm throw up. And it was Lochside who followed up a league draw with Bute and a league win over Ballachulish with a 2-1 victory at Inveraray. The young Inveraray side were peppered with the experienced Graham MacPherson in goal and the influential Euan McMurdo but Garry MacPherson was missing. Lochside were without David Cameron as work duties left him on Mull whilst Jordan Kerr was delayed due to work commitments so started on the bench. The Oban side’s starting attack consisted of Innes Jackson, Alexander MacDonald, Robbie Brown and Lewis Buchanan. After scoring four goals against the Lochaber seconds just 4 days earlier, Lewis Buchanan wasted no time getting back on the goal trail as he netted with just 2 minutes played. Buchanan’s fine head-height shot from to the left of the penalty spot powered past the keeper to make it 1-0. Lochside enjoyed most of the first half play in the Inveraray half but were unable to seriously threaten the home goal whilst, at the other end, Lochside keeper Dougie MacDonald hadn’t much to do. Lochside manager Gareth Evans replaced Robbie Brown with Jordan Kerr from the restart. Kerr went into defence, and Louis MacFarlane, who played the first half at buckshee back, went up front. And it was Lewis Buchanan again, this time just 3 minutes into the second half, who doubled Lochside’s lead with his sixth goal in two games. Buchanan didn’t catch the ball as cleanly as he would have liked but his effort beat MacPherson to make it 2-0. Graham MacPherson made a superb reflex save above his head on the hour to deny Lewis Buchanan a hat-trick whilst, just a minute later, he saved Callum Kirsop’s 30 yarder, again above his head with his club. Inveraray switched their attacking formation with three forwards pushing up and one staying deep but it was the Lochside centre line of Evan MacLellan, flanked by Callum Kirsop and Jamie Anderson, who took a grip on the match. Lochside were again able to introduce youngsters Matthew Sloss and Daniel Pearson for some valuable game time. Steven Cameron pulled a goal back for the hosts on 77 minutes. A long ball from Euan McMurdo was palmed away by Lochside keeper Dougie MacDonald but he lost sight of the ball as it dropped and full forward Cameron lofted the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-1. Inveraray pressed for a leveller but Scott Robertson and Ross Campbell, the latter playing at the back during the second half, as well as Calum MacMillan were all outstanding for Lochside.
Col Glen P Taynuilt P Col Glen’s game against Taynuilt at Glendaruel was postponed because of covid restrictions.
Mowi South League B Aberdour 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 The Aberdour second team staged a late fight-back to draw 2-2 with the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team at sunny Silversands. With no first game, Aberdour were able to include Alistair Abbott, Iain Fullerton, Tom Aitchison, Tom Bowerman and Angus Thorburn in a fifteen player squad. After a goalless first half, GMA took the lead on 46 minutes when Neil Robertson found space to score, low into the net. Aberdour started the second half well, pressing for a leveller but GMA doubled their lead on 73 minutes when Cameron Middleton’s shot took a deflection off Aodan Burns’ club on its way past Kevin Latimer in the home goal to make it 2-0. And it stayed that way until just 3 minutes from time when Tom Bowerman made a surging run forward and with the keeper narrowing the angle, Bowerman slipped the ball to Martin Cameron who had the simplest task of knocking the ball into an empty goal from close range. Aberdour went for it and Tom Bowerman was key once more as he made a mazy run into the D before being brought down and referee David Mitchell awarded a penalty. Bowerman took responsibility as he crashed the spot-hit into the top corner of the net to make the final score 2-2. The sides meet again this coming Saturday; this time in Glasgow.
Bute 3 Tayforth 6 Tayforth won 6-3 against the Bute seconds at the Meadows. Former hurler Brendan Duggan rattled home goals on 10, 15 and 42 to complete his hat-trick and give the visitors a 3-0 lead. There was a goal-glut either side of the break with Neil McKirdy pulling a goal back on 43 minutes only for Brendan Duggan to get his fourth of the afternoon to make it 4-1 at half-time. Bute’s Rory MacDonald made it 4-2 a minute after the restart but Finlay Stark on 47 minutes and Ewan Menzies just 3 minutes later put Tayforth out of sight. Rory MacDonald got his second goal with 10 minutes remaining to make the final score 6-3.
Mowi Central League Ardnamurchan 1 Lochaber 5 The Lochaber reserves won 5-1 against Ardnamurchan at Strontian. Donald MacRae scored the only goal of the first half after 16 minutes and the same player made it 2-0 just 4 minutes into the second half. Cameron Loughray struck twice on 57 and 70 minutes to make it 4-0 and Matthew Bradley’s own goal increased the visitors advantage a couple of minutes later. Calum Ritchie grabbed some consolation for Ard’ when he scored 15 minutes from time.
Kilmallie 4 Glenorchy 1 The Kilmallie colts were 4-1 winners against Glenorchy at the Canal Parks. Kilmallie took a grip of the match in the first half with Ross MacKenzie on 20 minutes, Iain MacIntyre a couple of minutes later and Ross MacKenzie again on 41 minutes amassing a 3-0 lead. Kenni Gray pulled a goal back on 42 minutes to make it 3-1 at the break. However Iain MacIntyre found the net on 61 minutes to make it 4-1.
Oban Celtic P Kilmory P The game between the Oban Celtic seconds and Kilmory at Ganavan was postponed because of the travel restrictions affecting Kilmory’s young squad.
