13 August 2014 Kingussie are through to the 2014 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final and Newtonmore lifted the Strathdearn Cup following the shinty action on Saturday 9 August 2014.
Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Semi Final Kingussie 2 Fort William 2 (Kingussie won 3-2 on penalties) Kingussie are through to the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final after they beat Fort William on penalties in their 4.05pm throw up at An Aird. Fraser Munro returned for Kingussie after serving a two match ban for a points accumulation whilst Gary Innes was missing for Fort William. Fort William played with the wind in their favour in the first half and they drew first blood on 3 minutes when Bryan Simpson scored to make it 1-0. However Ronald Ross levelled on 14 minutes with a fine strike. Daniel Stewart looked very lively for the Fort and he scored to put his side back in front on 29 minutes. However parity was restored for a second time when Savio Genini broke down the Kingussie left on 42 minutes before sending a superb shot high into the net to make it 2-2. Kingussie had the elements in the second half but they were unable to get their noses in front and Fort William hit the post as the tie could have gone either way. Kingussie had a chance to win it at the death but Neil Robertson brought down Thomas Borthwick who was through on goal and the Fort defender received a yellow card from referee Billy Wotherspoon. There was no scoring during the extra-time period with Fort William, playing with the elements, having the best of the 15 minutes. Neil Robertson saw red with just 3 minutes remaining when he received a second yellow card for another last-ditch challenge. Referee Billy Wotherspoon took the tie to a penalty shoot-out. The goal areas on the An Aird pitch have seen better days and the penalty spot had to be remarked. Ronald Ross scored first for Kings with Arran MacPhee missing the target for the Fort. However the advantage swung back Fort William’s way and Bryan Simpson had a chance to put his side through to the final with the tenth and final penalty but Kingussie keeper Craig Dawson saved. The tie went to sudden death and the players returned in the same order. Ronald Ross struck the ball hard and low into the net in a replica of his first penalty. Craig Dawson then became the Kingussie hero as he got his caman to Arran MacPhee’s spot-hit to send Kingussie through to the final where they await the out-come of this weekend’s semi-final between Skye Camanachd and Glenurquhart.
Strathdearn Cup Final Newtonmore 3 Skye Camanachd 2 Newtonmore lifted the Strathdearn Cup following a 3-2 win over Skye Camanachd in their 2pm throw up at Spean Bridge.Alan Palmer and Andrew Banks returned to the Skye squad after missing the previous weekend’s 5-4 defeat to Lochcarron. With co-managers Angie MacDonald and John Angus MacInnes included in the squad, Donnie Martin looked after the team from the touchline. Newtonmore co-managers Cammy MacDonald and Glen Tonkin fielded a side which was a mixture of youth and experience. Youngster Iain Robinson caught the eye with a fine hat-trick against Glenurquhart in the semi-finals and he put ‘More ahead after 12 minutes to make it 1-0. Skye levelled on 21 minutes when the ball broke to Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod and he finished well to make it 1-1. Newtonmore went back in front in 27 minutes when the Skye defence failed to clear a corner and Brett Munro finished to make it 2-1 despite the efforts of Skye keeper Iain MacLeod. Skye levelled for a second time on 42 minutes when Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod got his second to make it 2-2 following a scramble in the Newtonmore defence. Newtonmore went in front for the third time on the stroke of half time as Iain Robinson notched his second of the game to make it 3-2. There was no scoring in the second half and Newtonmore did enough to lift the trophy which was presented to their captain and keeper Owen Fraser. Archie Ritchie was the match referee.
Orion Group Premiership Kinlochshiel P Kyles Athletic P The 3pm throw up between Kinlochshiel and Kyles Athletic at Kirkton was postponed because of a bereavement.
Marine Harvest National Division Kilmallie 5 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Kilmallie go top of the Marine Harvest National Division after they beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 5-1 in their 2pm throw up at the Canal Parks. Martin Stewart served a one match ban for Kilmallie for a points accumulation. A Ryan Stewart hat-trick and a John Stewart brace counted for Kilmallie with youngster Calum McLay getting a consolation goal for GMA. Kilmallie are a point ahead of second place Oban Camanachd but they only have two games remaining whilst the Mossfield side have four matches to go. Fort William, in third place, are a couple of points off top spot with five matches still to play.
Oban Camanachd 10 Bute 0 Oban Camanachd returned to the top of the table following a 10-0 win over Bute which officially relegated the Islanders at Taynuilt. Scott MacMillan was suspended for the Oban side but they still proved too strong for the Islanders who have struggled to get a consistent team selection all season. Gavin Stobbart put Oban Camanachd ahead in the opening minute and David Lafferty added a second on 5 minutes. Aidan MacIntyre on 15 minutes and Lorne Dickie on 28 minutes made it 4-0. Gavin Stobbart got his second 5 minutes later and an Andrew MacCuish strike a minute before the break made it 6-0 at half-time. Lorne Dickie got his second 4 minutes after the restart with Andrew MacCuish doing like-wise on 53 minutes to make it 8-0. There was a break in scoring until 10 minutes from time when Andrew MacCuish completed his hat-trick and Scotland U17 player Connor Howe rounded off the scoring when he made it 10-0 just 3 minutes later. Oban Camanachd go second in the table, a point behind leaders Kilmallie and a point ahead of third place Fort William.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Glenurquhart 7 Kingussie 0 Glenurquhart beat Kingussie 7-0 in their 11.45am throw up at Blairbeg. The early throw up allowed the Kings squad to travel to An Aird afterwards to watch the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup semi-final against Fort William. The Glen included Lewis MacLennan in their squad and he netted the opener on 13 minutes after referee Martin MacLean awarded the home side a penalty. MacLennan got his and Glen’s second on 21 minutes and Raymond Robertson made it 3-0 just 3 minutes later. Lewis MacLennan completed his hat-trick on the hour mark to make it 4-0. James MacPherson got in on the act with a goal on 68 minutes whilst Ryan Porter made it 6-0 a minute later. James MacPherson got his second on 71 minutes to complete the 7-0 win. Glenurquhart move up a place to fourth in the table.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Aberdour 2 Ballachulish 3 Ballachulish overcame a difficult hurdle in their quest to win the Marine Harvest South Division 1 title when they beat Aberdour 3-2 in their 2pm throw up at Silver Sands. Balla’ went into the game without John MacDonald and David Grant who were both banned for points accumulations. Grant MacKenzie put the Jubilee Park side ahead a minute before the break. Michael Slezas made it 2-0 on 52 minutes and that’s the way it stayed until 10 minutes from time when Lewis Nicol pulled a goal back to make it 2-1. Lorne Brown scored a crucial third for Ballachulish a couple of minutes later and although Kevin Latimer made it 3-2 just 3 minutes from time, Ballachulish saw out the rest of the game to take both points. Ballachulish are now a point ahead of Kyles Athletic with three games to go whilst the Tighnabruaich men have two matches left.
Kyles Athletic 4 Taynuilt 1 Kyles Athletic remain a point off top spot following their 4-1 victory over Taynuilt in their 2pm throw up at Tighnabruaich. A Gordon Whyte hat-trick and a Scott MacDonald strike won the day for Kyles with a Chris Blair own goal Taynuilt’s only consolation.
Oban Celtic 2 Lochside Rovers 1 There was an Oban derby as Oban Celtic and Lochside Rovers met in a noon clash at Ganavan. And Oban Celtic made it two wins over their rivals this season with a 2-1 triumph. Daniel Madej was suspended for Oban Celtic and Chris MacMillan was banned for Lochside Rovers whilst Johnny Will was also missing. There was a surprise ahead of throw up with former Lochside player and manager David MacInnes turning out for Oban Celtic. After an even first half, Lochside Rovers went in front 4 minutes after the restart thanks to a Brian MacCallum strike and they looked the likelier to add to their tally at this stage. However a superb Kenny Wotherspoon goal on 73 minutes levelled the match. The winner came 11 minutes and from time and the script was written for David MacInnes to score against his former side to give Oban Celtic both points. Oban Celtic are now just a point behind fourth place Lochside Rovers and they have a game in hand which they play against Taynuilt at the Taynuilt Playing Field this coming weekend.

Kinlochshiel P Fort William P The noon throw up between Kinlochshiel and Fort William at Kirkton was postponed because of a bereavement.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Inveraray 15 Aberdour 0 Inveraray require just one more point to win the league after they beat Aberdour 15-0 in their 2pm throw up at the Winterton. Other than the final score, there are at least two other remarkable statistics from this encounter. First of all, the first half was scoreless with Ross Anderson opening the scoring on 49 minutes. Fraser Watt made it 2-0 on 50 minutes with Scott Robertson adding a third a minute later. Fraser Watt took his tally to six goals with strikes on 52, 54, 59, 61 and 62 minutes which brought about the second statistic – a double-hat-trick in just 12 minutes. This all made it 8-0 to the home side and the goals kept coming. Ross Anderson got his second on 67 minutes and Ross Griffin added a tenth a couple of minutes later. Ruaridh Graham (Junior) made it 11-0 on 71 minutes and John MacKenzie on 78 minutes and Kenny Kirkhope on 85 minutes made it 13-0. Ruaridh Graham (Junior) got his second a couple of minutes later and Fraser MacNicol rounded off the 15-0 win.

Marine Harvest North Division 3 Lochbroom v Inverness W/O The 2pm throw up between Lochbroom and Inverness at Inverlael was postponed as the home side were unable to raise a team. The points were awarded to Inverness.
Strathspey Camanachd P Caberfeidh P The match between Strathspey Camanachd and Caberfeidh was rearranged for Tuesday 12 August with a 7.15pm throw up. |
