30 June 2014 Kyles Athletic retained the AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup as Old Anniesland, Glasgow was the main focus for the shinty world on Saturday 28 June 2014.
AJG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup - Final Kyles Athletic 6 Inveraray 2 Kyles Athletic twice came from behind to retain the ALG Parcels Glasgow Celtic Society Cup with a 6-2 win over Inveraray in their 4.05pm throw up at Old Anniesland, Glasgow. Kyles Athletic welcomed back David Zavaroni who served a one match ban for a points accumulation when the Tighnabruaich side beat Glasgow Mid Argyll in the Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter finals last weekend. Inveraray’s Douglas Dando missed the big day as he was on holiday. Inveraray went ahead on 6 minutes when a David Robertson free-hit was deflected into the path of Euan McMurdo and he fired an unstoppable shot into the top right corner of Kenny MacDonald’s net. It was a terrific strike and a great start to the final. Kyles levelled on 13 minutes when Roddy MacDonald collected a ball at the edge of the D which was played inside from the right by Roberto Zavaroni and MacDonald turned away from two defenders before flicking the ball into the net to make it 1-1. Inveraray went back in front on 21 minutes when Euan McMurdo controlled a defensive clearance following an Ally MacDonald shy before crashing the ball high into the net to make it 2-1. Kyles they squared the final for a second time 5 minutes before the break. Robbie MacLeod won possession down the Kyles left and he sent a great ball into the goal area. Thomas Whyte tried to get on the end of it but he was brought down at the edge of the D. Whyte played a rehearsed free-hit short to Dunkie Kerr who lost his marker and darted through the centre of the Inveraray defence before slotting the ball low into the net to make it 2-2. The game was moving from end-to-end but it was Kyles who edged themselves in front on 62 minutes. The Tighnabruaich side were awarded a disputed free-hit at the edge of the D and when Inveraray were unable to clear the ball, Roddy MacDonald found Thomas Whyte in front of goal and he blasted a shot into the roof of the net to make it 3-2. Kyles extended their advantage on 73 minutes. Roddy MacDonald collected a Grant Irvine ball from the right and he held off a challenge from John Kennedy before tucking the ball past the on-rushing Graham MacPherson to make it 4-2. Kyles, who had taken Roddy MacDonald back to midfield, went for the kill and they made it 5-2 on 76 minutes. Thomas Whyte closed down an attempted clearance from Andrew McMurdo before pushing the ball into space and tucking it low into the bottom right corner of the net. Kyles captain Thomas Whyte completed his hat-trick to make it 6-2 on 81 minutes when he ran onto a Colin MacDonald pass and he swept the ball past the Graham MacPherson, who raced from goal to narrow the angle, with the ball spinning into the net off the left post. Hat-trick hero Thomas Whyte was selected as BBC Alba’s man of the match by Stewart MacKenzie who joined Hugh Dan MacLennan in the TV commentary box. Euan McMurdo and John Kennedy deserve mention for Inveraray whilst Kyles’ trio Dunkie Kerr, David Zavaroni and Robbie MacLeod controlled the midfield for most of the game. Strathdearn Plate - Quarter Final Lovat 10 Lewis Camanachd 0 Lovat overcame Lewis Camanachd 10-0 in their 12.30 throw up at Balgate. Rory Campbell put Lovat ahead in the opening minute and he added a second on 14 minutes. Duncan Collings made it 3-0 on 18 minutes whilst Danny Kelly added a fourth on 25 minutes and that’s the way it stayed until the break. Lewis had difficulty clearing their defensive lines and Rory Campbell took his tally to four goals with strikes on 50 and 56 minutes and a quick-fire Ciaran Melens double on 58 and 60 minutes made it 8-0. Lovat’s Rory Gallagher added a ninth a couple of minutes later and Callum Farquharson made it a perfect ten on the stroke of full time. Lovat used three keepers in the game with Chris MacCallum starting between the sticks and Callum Farquharson and Andrew Wallace also having spells in goal.
Orion Group Premiership Newtonmore 2 Glenurquhart 2 Newtonmore and Glenurquhart shared the points in a 2-2 draw at the Eilan. James MacPherson put the visitors ahead with a goal on 13 minutes. Newtonmore had Norman Campbell back in their line-up and when referee Billy Wotherspoon awarded the home side penalties on 37 and 42 minutes, the full back converted on both occasions to put his team 2-1 up at half time. Glenurquhart earned a point with Neale Reid’s goal just 6 minutes from time. This was Newtonmore’s final home league match of the season. The reigning champions now lead second place Lovat by two points but they have played a game more.
Lovat 2 Lochaber 1 Lovat took advantage of Newtonmore’s slip-up with a hard fought 2-1 win over Lochaber in their 3pm throw up at Balgate. Kevin Bartlett was free to play for Lovat but he will miss their next outing because of a points accumulation. However Drew Howie was out through injury whilst Greg Matheson, Jamie Matheson and Michael MacKenzie all started on the bench. Fraser Gallacher continued at full back for the RBS MacTavish Cup winners and Craig Mainland remained in defence. Zandz Ferguson and Neil MacDonald were still out for Lochaber but they have Calum MacDonald back in goal. Martin Johnstone was free of suspension for Lochaber. Lovat controlled the first half and Graeme MacMillan is proving to be a key player for them this season and he put them ahead on 10 minutes. It was a clever finish from MacMillan as he flicked the ball between his legs to catch out the visiting defence. Graeme MacMillan added a second just 5 minutes before the break when he took the ball on the run and his 25 yard shot flew into the net. Lochaber came much more into the game in the second half and Ben Delaney pulled a goal back on the hour mark when Lovat failed to clear their lines and the Lochaber full forward forced the ball over the line from close range. Lovat stayed in front to take the spoils and they are now two points behind Newtonmore with a game in hand.
Kinlochshiel 2 Kingussie 4 Kingussie came from behind to beat Kinlochshiel 4-2 at Kirkton. John MacRae was free of suspension for the ‘Shiel side after missing their last outing. Kingussie had Lee Bain in defence and they also started Ronald Ross in attack. However Ross was forced off early in the game through injury. Savio Genini fired Kingussie into a 10 minute lead and they passed up chances to go further in front before Jordan Fraser drew the home side level on 20 minutes. Ally Nixon put Kinlochshiel in front on 27 minutes and they took that lead into the break. As the second half went on, it looked as if Kinlochshiel might pick up two valuable points. However Thomas Borthwick had other ideas and he made it 2-2 on 82 minutes. Louis Munro put the Kings in front on 82 minutes and Thomas Borthwick got his second and Kingussie’s fourth 5 minutes from time. Kingussie now move a point clear of Glenurquhart into third place.
Marine Harvest National Division Kilmallie 1 Fort William 5 One of the day’s most interesting encounters was the 3pm derby clash between Kilmallie and Fort William at the Canal Parks. Fort William were without the suspended Niall MacPhee but they welcomed Gary Innes back from injury. Stevie Stewart also made a timely return from a hamstring injury with Forts’ Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup quarter-final tie against Kinlochshiel just a week away. Gary Innes put his side ahead on 20 minutes. Two goals in four minutes from Gordie MacKinnon on 27 and 31 minutes made it 3-0 at the break. Gary Innes got his second on 52 minutes to make it 4-0. Peter Carmichael pulled a goal back for Kilmallie a couple of minutes later but when referee John Angus Gillies awarded the Fort a penalty on 58 minutes, Arran MacPhee kept his cool and fired the ball high into the net to make it 5-1. Fort William are now a point behind third place Kilmallie but the An Aird side have played two games fewer.
Caberfeidh 0 Beauly 1 Beauly beat Caberfeidh 1-0 in their 2pm meeting at Castle Leod. Caberfeidh had Ally MacLennan, Ruairidh MacLennan, Blair Morrison and Jack Pilcher free of suspension. Ewan Pilcher continued in goal for Cabers. Scott MacLeod was missing for Beauly and boss Roger Cormack listed himself as one of two substitutes. The only goal of the game came early in the match when Jack MacDonald latched onto a rebound and steered past a couple of challenges before confidently slotting the ball home with only 11 minutes played. Both young keepers – Jack Pilcher for Cabers and Josh Grant for Beauly – made good saves to prevent any further scoring. As the game moved into the final quarter, young Cabers substitute Callum MacKay was twice denied by Grant whilst Pilcher made a brilliant flying save to thwart Sean Stewart. Second place Beauly are just a point behind leaders Oban Camanachd but the Braeview Park side have played three games more.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Kingussie 0 Newtonmore 3 The derby meeting between the Kingussie and Newtonmore reserve sides at the Dell was brought forward to Friday 27 June 2014. The Badenoch clubs have made a habit of playing these games on a Friday evening and the supporters have come out in numbers. There was a mixture of youth and experience on show in both sides. John MacKenzie started at full back for Newtonmore and Kingussie’s Ally MacLeod and ‘More’s Kenny Ross did battle in the middle of the park. Chris Sellar put Newtonmore ahead on 19 minutes with the only goal of the first half. Both sides fielded make-shift keepers – Bob MacGregor for Kingussie and Owen Fraser for Newtonmore – and both made good saves throughout the game. ‘More sealed victory late in the game thanks to goals from two of their MacTavish Juvenile Cup winning aces as Craig Ritchie on 84 minutes and Iain Robinson on the stroke of full time rounded off the 3-0 victory. Thee win put the Newtonmore reserves top of the league until after the following days’ fixtures.
Skye Camanachd 5 Strathglass 0 Skye Camanachd maintained their 100% league record with a 5-0 win over Strathglass in their 3pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch. Skye were missing Will Cowie, Jamie Gannon and the suspended Allan MacKinnon whilst George Phimmister was unavailable for Strathglass. Shockie MacLennan got Skye off to a great start with a goal after just 4 minutes. Shockie MacLennan’s switch from defence to attack has been a real plus for Skye this season and he made it 2-0 with his second goal on the half hour mark. Skye substitute Ally “Spod” MacLeod added a third just 3 minutes later. Second half goals from Danny Morrison on 63 minutes and Kenny Campbell a minute from time rounded of the win and means Skye maintain their 100% league record with six games played.
Beauly 1 Glenurquhart 3 Glenurquhart came out on top in the reserve meeting with Beauly at Braeview Park. James Cameron was back in the Beauly side and he scored their goal. However Paul MacKintosh, Raymond Robertson and Duncan Fraser gave the Glen the points.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Ballachulish 1 Oban Celtic 1 Ballachulish and Oban Celtic shared the points with a 1-1 draw at the Jubilee Park. Keeper David MacPhee started a two match ban for Balla’ whilst Neil Carmichael was free of his ban for Oban Celtic. However Daniel Madej missed out for the visitors following his red card last weekend. Scott Henderson put the more fancied Ballachulish ahead on 22 minutes. However a Kenny Wotherspoon strike on the hour mark made it 1-1. The points lifts Oban Celtic into fifth place whilst Balla’ go second, two points behind leaders Kyles Athletic but with two games in hand.
Strachur 1 Lochside Rovers 4 Fourth place Lochside Rovers took the points with a 4-1 win over second bottom Strachur at Strachurmore. David Wilson was suspended for Strachur but Ross MacDonald put his three game ban behind him. Steven Wilson scored for Strachur but Scott Dempster, Scott Turnbull, Diarmid MacMillan and Jonathon Will got the goals for the Oban side. Referee Ronnie Campbell sent off Strachur’s Stuart Nairn and Scott Dempster from Oban Camanachd.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Fort William 3 Aberdeen University 1 Aberdeen University ran Fort William close before the home side took the points with a 3-1 win at An Aird. Cameron Grant was missing for Fort William and Donald Fraser was free of suspension for the Students. Ewen Campbell put Fort William ahead on 11 minutes but Willie Hunter levelled a couple of minutes later. Fort William won it with two late goals. Peter Wood put them back in front on 82 minutes and Ewen Campbell got his second and Fort William’s third on 84 minutes. The 3-1 win means Fort William now move to within a point of leaders Glengarry and they have two games in hand.
Skye Camanachd 1 Kinlochshiel 3 Kinlochshiel came out on top in their noon derby meeting with Skye Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch. Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod and DJ Gilpin returned for Skye but Thomas Wilson and Magnus Burd were missing. Colin MacDiarmid was suspended for ‘Shiel as he served a one match ban for a points accumulation. The closest to a first half goal came when referee Martin MacLean awarded ‘Shiel a penalty but Iain MacLeod saved Paul MacRae’s effort. Three goals early in the second half from Gordie MacDonald, Paul MacRae and Davie Glass put ‘Shiel in control. Angie MacDonald pulled a goal back for Skye on 74 minutes but Kinlochshiel saw out the rest of the game to take the points. The loss sees Skye fall to the bottom of the table in place of Kinlochshiel.
Lochaber 5 Boleskine 3 Lochaber got the better of Boleskine with a 5-3 win at Spean Bridge. Two goals from Keith Neville and efforts from Finlay MacDonald, Ryan Toal and Martin Paterson cancelled out visiting goals from Lewis Smith Neil Hope and Keith Nicolson. Referee Ron Kennedy sent off Boleskine’s Iain Grant. Lochaber go fifth whilst Boleskine remain in third place.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Glenorchy 0 Bute 2 Bute returned from Mart Park with both points after a 2-0 win over Glenorchy. Craig Harrower and Craig Fisher got the all-important goals. Bute go fifth in the table whilst Glenorchy remain one off bottom place.
Marine Harvest North Division 3 Kilmallie 1 Caberfeidh 2 Kilmallie and Caberfeidh in their noon clash at the Canal Parks. Jordan MacPhee was free to play for Kilmallie but he will miss their next outing because of a points accumulation. Goals from Caberfeidh’s Andrew MacMaster and Gavin McLaughlan cancelled out Ewan Mowat’s effort for Kilmallie. Caberfeidh are now five points clear at the top of the table as the league heads for the split.
Lochbroom 3 Strathspey Camanachd 5 Strathspey Camanachd returned to league action for the first time in five weeks with a 5-3 win over Lochbroom in their meeting at Inverlael. Paddy Wilson, Lorne Hughes and Ewan MacFadyen all scored for the home side but two each from Edgars Peca and Mark MacDonald and a Liam Tinney strike countered to give second place Strathspey the points. |
