The Shinty Round Up – Saturday 10 May 2014 | |
11 May 2014 There was a mixture of league and cup shinty action on Saturday 10 May 2014.
Orion Group Premiership Lochaber 0 Newtonmore 3 Newtonmore took advantage of the fact the Lovat’s match with Kyles Athletic was postponed as they returned to the top of the table with a 3-0 win over Lochaber at Spean Bridge. Home keeper Calum MacDonald was still sidelined through injury so reserve goalie Bryn Whittaker continued in between the sticks. Defenders Donald MacRae and Brennan MacDonald were also missing as were Martin Johnstone and Zandz Ferguson. Iain Love returned to the starting line-up. Ben Delaney and Kevin Ferguson were also back but they started on the bench so Danny Delaney continued at full forward. Newtonmore were without injured full back Norman Campbell whilst Andy MacKintosh and Glen MacKintosh were amongst the other absentees. There were starting slots for Scott Campbell in defence, Craig Ritchie in midfield and Scott Chisholm up front. Fraser MacKintosh gave the reigning champions the lead on 26 minutes but ‘More had to wait until 20 minutes from time to seal the win. Evan Menzies made it 2-0 on 70 minutes whilst substitute Calum Stewart netted the third a minute from time. Newtonmore now lead Lovat on goal difference with both sides having played seven fixtures – exactly half way through their respective league campaigns.
Kingussie 3 Inveraray 2 Kingussie regain third place in the table following their 3-2 victory over Inveraray in their 4pm throw up at the Dell. The Kings were understrength with several of their first team pool attending Fraser Munro’s stag weekend. Co-managers Russell Jones and Davie Anderson named a youthful squad with nine of their fifteen players aged under 20 years. They also called on six of the players who had featured for the Kings second string in the early throw up win over Kilmallie. This included Ronald Ross who played a full 90 minutes in defence for the Kingussie reserves and then made his first appearance of the season for the senior side in his more accustomed forward position. Indeed it didn’t take long for Ross to confirm that he still knows where the goals are as he scored a double in 2 and 9 minutes to give Kingussie an early 2-0 lead. Lewis MacNicol pulled a goal back on 27 minutes and that’s the way it stayed until the interval. Former Kilmallie player Peter McIntyre drew Inveraray level when he made it 2-2 on 66 minutes but there was to be a sting in the tail for the visitors as Kingussie won both points with a goal 16 minutes from time. This time Ronald Ross was the architect as he set up Rory MacGregor 20 yards from goal and the youngster smashed home what proved to be the winning goal. Whilst Ronald Ross’ contribution cannot be under-estimated, the home side had some great performances, notably Ryan MacWilliam who was excellent in midfield.
Kinlochshiel P Glenurquhart P The match between Kinlochshiel and Glenurquhart was postponed as Kirkton failed a Saturday morning pitch inspection. The fixture could not be reversed as the sides have already met at Blairbeg.
Kyles Athletic P Lovat P An unplayable pitch at Tighnabruaich meant the match between Kyles Athletic and Lovat was postponed. The Kyles first team have yet to play on their Tighnabruaich pitch this season.
Marine Harvest National Division Oban Camanachd 5 Glenorchy 1 Oban Camanachd got back on their winning ways with a 5-1 derby victory over Glenorchy at Mossfield. Oban Camanachd’s David Lafferty served a one match ban for a points accumulation. John McNulty was free of suspension for Glenorchy. Fulton Ronald was able to play for the visitors but he will miss Glenorchy’s next outing because of a points accumulation. Oban Camanachd went in front on 16 minutes when Aidan McIntyre scored but Kieran McKay levelled just 5 minutes later. Andrew MacCuish put the Oban side ahead once more when he scored after 27 minutes and Lorne Dickie made it 3-1 just 5 minutes before the break. Lorne Dickie got his second on 70 minutes and Andrew McCuish did like-wise 10 minutes from time to make it 5-1. Oban Camanachd stay on top of the table with only two points dropped from their five games so far.
Fort William 3 Kilmallie 1 Fort William came out on top in their 3pm derby meeting with Kilmallie at An Aird. Fort William were without Gary Innes who was in Spain on tour with his band Manran whilst experienced defender Neil Robertson was also working. Jamie Cruickshank was sidelined with a broken hand whilst Niall MacPhee served the second match of a two game ban. Kilmallie had a host of players back following last weekend’s dramatic 7-4 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup win at Strachur. Ryan Campbell started for Fort William after scoring two goals and playing a full 90 minutes for the Fort reserves earlier in the day and he put his side ahead after 14 minutes and he added a second just 5 minutes later. Kilmallie’s Michael Rodger pulled a goal back a goal a couple of minutes into the second half to make it 2-1 and give the visitors hope. However Arran MacPhee scored 10 minutes from time to make it 3-1 and give Fort William two wins out of two Marine Harvest National Division games.
Beauly 1 Caberfeidh 1 A goal at the start of the game and a goal at the death meant Beauly and Caberfeidh shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Brae View Park. Scott MacLeod returned in defence for Beauly after missing the previous weekend’s win over Oban Camanachd. This allowed Conor Cormack to push into midfield to match up against Cabers full centre Ally MacLennan. There was some doubt as to whether this game would actually go ahead as a morning downpour left the pitch heavy in places. However referee Colin MacDonald opted to start the match and Caberfeidh went in front after just 3 minutes when Craig Morrison fired low into the net from a corner. Chances were few and far between with both full backs – David Neilson for Beauly and Lee Nicol for Caberfeidh – marshalling their respective defences well. Beauly boss Roger Cormack threw on substitutes Jack MacDonald and Ryan Tillman in a bid to get back on level terms and with the clock running down, he pushed Conor Cormack into attack. The move paid dividends as deep into stoppage time, Conor Cormack scored from a tight angle inside the D following a corner to make it 1-1. The final whistle went seconds later and the goal earned the home side a valuable point. Cabers are in second place in the table, ahead of third place Beauly on goal difference, although the Castle Leod men have played two games fewer.
Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Bute 1 The match between Bute and Glasgow Mid Argyll was switched to Yoker on Friday evening after the Meadows was deemed unplayable. GMA took the lead on 33 minutes when Craig Anderson slammed the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle inside the D, This was the only goal of the first half. However Chris McGowan drew the Islanders level when he scored 5 minutes into the second half to make it 1-1. The winning goal came on 62 minutes when referee Lachie Wood awarded GMA a penalty. Craig Anderson stepped up to put the ball to the keeper’s right to make it 2-1 with what was his eighth league goal of the season in five matches and his eleventh goal in all competitions.
Balliemore Cup - Quarter Finals Strathglass 0 Skye Camanachd 1 Skye Camanachd are through to the Balliemore Cup semi finals after they edged out Strathglass 1-0 at Cannich. Full back Steven Morrison returned for Skye after missing the previous weekend’s Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup win over Glenorchy. However Kenny Campbell was missing. Skye had most of the first half pressure but they were unable to test home keeper Steve MacLachlan. Jordan Murchison thought he had given Skye a second half lead but goal judge Eoghan Stewart ruled out his effort with offside given against Allan MacKinnon. The winning goal came on 70 minutes when Will Cowie burst down the wing. Cowie appeared to be fouled but referee Archie Ritchie played advantage. Cowie played in Shockie MacLennan who controlled the ball and turned quickly to beat his marker before smashing a back-hand shot into the net to make it 1-0.
Taynuilt 0 Ballachulish 2 Ballachulish made the last four with a 2-0 win over Taynuilt at the Playing Field. John MacDonald was available for Balla’ but he will miss their next two outing as he serves a one game ban for a points accumulation. John Martin Philips gave Aberdour an 18 minute lead but Brian Slattery levelled on 25 minutes. The Students went ahead 3 minutes later through Mark Fraser but Aberdour got themselves back in front with two goals in two minutes. First Angus Thorburn, who has come through the ranks at the Fife club, made it 2-2 on 34 minutes. And then, when referee Ronnie Campbell awarded the home side a penalty just 60 seconds, Darren Coyle kept his nerve to make it 3-2 from the spot. With no second half goals, the win sees Aberdour reach the semi finals of the Balliemore Cup at the first time of asking.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup – Second Round Fort William 5 Kinlochshiel 0 Fort William ran out 5-0 winners against Kinlochshiel in their noon throw up at An Aird. Lovat 5 Skye Camanachd 2 The Skye Camanachd second team lost 5-2 to Lovat in their Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup second round tie at Balgate on Saturday 10 May 2014. An early Thomas Fraser double on 3 and 12 minutes gave Lovat an early lead. Rory Campbell made it 3-0 on 16 minutes and when Thomas Fraser completed his hat-trick to make it 4-0 on 25 minutes, the hosts were in the driving seat. Angie MacDonald pulled a goal back for Skye a couple of minutes into the second half but an Alan MacPherson penalty on 75 minutes made it 5-1. Skye U17 player Conor Ross got his first goal at second team level 3 minutes later to make it 5-2. Skye put in a much improved second half performance but Lovat ran out deserved winners.

Kings veteran Kevin Thain netted on 13 and 20 minutes to put his side 2-0 ahead. Jake MacPherson made it 3-0 on 25 minutes and Kevin Thain completed his hat-trick on 38 minutes. A Chris Holleysong goal on 43 minutes made it 5-0 at the break and ended the tie as a contest. Kevin Thain got his fourth and Kingussie’s sixth on 51 minutes. Late goals from youth players Roddy Young on 87 minutes and Robert Mabon a minute from time completed the win.

Paul Bowman from Inverness and Sandy Urquhart from Lochbroom were sent off by referee Andy MacLean after a scuffle, leaving the match eleven v eleven. However late first half strikes from Steven Bellshaw on 43 minutes and Jamie MacFadyen on the stroke of half time made it 3-0 on the break.
