The Shinty Round Up - Saturday 17 February 2018 | |
18 February 2018 Some games beat the wintery weather as the penultimate round of pre-season friendly matches took place on Saturday 17 February 2018.
Kingussie 5 Kinlochshiel 2 Kinlochshiel took the field for the first time this season as they travelled to Dunbarry to play Kingussie. The Kings were without Fraser Munro, Calum Grant and Ryan Borthwick. Keeper Craig Dawson was also missing so Robert Shiells played in goal. 2017 Marine Harvest Premiership champions Kinlochshiel travelled without five regulars including Oliver MacRae who will miss the start of the season as he is abroad. Kingussie played very well and Roddy Young scored twice to put them in control before Lee Bain added a third with a fantastic strike. Savio Genini sent the ball down the Kingussie left to Roddy Young and he knocked the ball towards the left of the D where Lee Bain had made a run from the right and, on the angle, Bain crashed the ball into the roof of the net. Roddy Young notched a hat-trick goal before ‘Shiel’s John MacRae made it 4-1. Roddy Young got his fourth goal of the game when a long ball up the park broke to him on the left of the penalty spot. Young, who’d got free of his marker, played the ball down the left wing and, on his back-hand; he powered a waist-high shot into the net. ‘Shiel’s Keith MacRae pulled another goal back but Kingussie, with Kieran MacPherson in fine form, stayed in front for an impressive 5-2 win. Kingussie lost Ruaridh Anderson after 25 minutes with the recurrence of a back strain whilst Rory MacKeachan came off before half time with a tight hamstring.
Oban Celtic 11 Glengarry 3 Marine Harvest National Division side Oban Celtic were ruthless in front of goal, beating 2017 Marine Harvest North Division 2 winners Glengarry 11-3. This 2pm throw up was originally scheduled for Mossfield but the wet weather led to a change of venue to the Oban High School 3g pitch. Oban Celtic made their higher league status count as Andy MacDonald, man of the match Ross MacMillan and his brother Daniel MacMillan all grabbed hat-tricks whilst club captain Daniel Madej scored twice. The ‘Garry goals came from Nick Dalgety, Kyle MacKinnon and Steven Cameron. Oban Celtic were without Neil Carmichael and George MacMillan but new signings from Oban Lorn; defender Calum MacLean and keeper David Martin each played 45 minutes whilst the club’s other new signing, Dylan Cooke, was solid at wing centre.
Glenurquhart 0 Kilmallie 1 The Kilmallie squad headed for Blairbeg to play Marine Harvest Premiership side Glenurquhart and they returned home with a 1-0 victory. The Glen added Ally MacKintosh to their injury list whilst it was a new look Kilmallie side with Liam Cameron and Robbie MacFadyen included. Kilmallie forward Michael Rodger scored the goal that made the difference with the visitors also hitting the frame of the goal.
Lovat 6 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 The Lovat and Glasgow Mid Argyll first teams did battle at Balgate with the home side running out 6-0 winners. Callum Cruden returned for Lovat but Craig Mainland, Martin Mainland and Calum MacAulay were missing. GMA travelled with Ewen Murray, who missed most of last season through injury, and they started with a forward line of Jamie McFadyen, Calum Mclay, John McNulty and Craig Anderson. Lovat took an early lead when Greg Matheson was brought down inside the D. Matheson picked himself up and sent a powerful penalty low to keeper Robert Dunnings left. Lewis Tawse made the most of a defensive slip and he went on to take the ball around the keeper to make it 2-0 with 30 minutes played. Lewis Tawse got his second from the edge of the D on 53 minutes with Greg Matheson also getting a second 10 minutes later. Marc MacLachlan made it 5-0 on 73 minutes with an unstoppable shot from the left of the box. Lewis Tawse completed his hat-trick with a couple of minutes left following a goalmouth scramble. GMA kept going until the end and tested Stuart MacDonald late in the game but Robert Dunnings was by far the busier of the two keepers, making some good saves. The only concerns for Lovat manager Fraser Gallacher will be injuries to Mark Kelly and Lorne Mackay.
Lovat 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 4 The Glasgow Mid Argyll second team twice came from behind to beat the Lovat second team 4-2 in an entertaining game at Balgate. A GMA squad of twenty players travelled north so some featured in both games. James White put Lovat, who had Reece Munro in their side, ahead before Finlay MacMillan drew GMA level. Raymond Rennie restored Lovat’s advantage with a superb strike. Rennie took a ball from the right, flicked it in the air and volleyed it past Robert Dunnings in the GMA goal. Innes MacMillan drew GMA level for a second time, making it 2-2 at the break. GMA went on to win the game with Angus MacInnes, who suffered a hand injury, and Calum Mclay making the final score 4-2. However Kilmory found their rhythm and four goals from Alex Cunningham and a David MacAllister strike gave the south side a 5-2 win.
Aberdour 3 Aberdeen University 3 Aberdour and Aberdeen University drew 3-3 in their 1pm throw up at Silversands. Both sides finished runners up in their respective South and North Division 1 leagues last season so this was always going to be a good contest. Aberdeen played down the slope with the wind advantage in the first half on a heavy pitch and a good Gregor Cushnie strike sent the ball into the bottom corner of the net after only 3 minutes. Stuart Cameron made it 2-0 when he punished some defensive hesitation on the half hour mark Aberdour, with captain Cammy McCue and young Iain Fullerton catching the eye, had to withstand some first half pressure although home forward David McDougall forced a good save late in the half. ‘Dour had the elements after the restart and Alec Mitchell and David MacKenzie combined to set up a chance for David McDougall to make it 2-1. David McDougall got his second after some good forward play to level the game. Angus Thorburn put the hosts in front for the first time in the match with a great strike. The Students were never out of it though and Stuart Cameron made it 3-3 after 75 minutes.
Inverness 2 Glenurquhart 1 The Inverness second team came from a goal down to beat a youthful Glenurquhart second team 2-1 at the Bught Park. The Glen lost some players to their first team on Saturday morning but Ben Hosie gave them the lead. However Charlie MacDonald equalised to make it 1-1 at half-time.
