08 April 2013 Surprise leaders Inveraray go two points clear at the top of the Orion Group Premiership following the shinty action on Saturday 6 April 2013.
Orion Group Premiership Lochaber 0 Inveraray 1 Inveraray go two points clear at the top of the Orion Group Premiership following their 1-0 win over Lochaber in their 3pm throw up at Spean Bridge. The home side had assistant manager Calum Cameron in temporary charge following Michael Delaney’s decision to stand down after a successful spell in charge. Cameron will remain in charge until the club meet to agree a way forward. Inveraray were without influential defender Douglas Dando who will be out for several weeks with an achilles injury. The only goal of the game came on 69 minutes and it was former Kilmallie player Peter McIntyre who did the damage. McIntyre has now scored twice in his first two outings for the Royal Burgh side and he is proving to be a useful acquisition. Inveraray are two points clear of second place Newtonmore although the champions have a game in hand. Lochaber are bottom of the table and their main problem seems to be in front of goal where they have only scored once in their opening five games.
Oban Camanachd 0 Newtonmore 2 Second half goals from Chris Sellar and Calum Stewart gave Newtonmore a hard-earned 2-0 win over Oban Camanachd at Mossfield. The visitors have had a number of injury problems in recent weeks with Glen MacKintosh struggling with a shoulder injury and Fraser MacKintosh hampered by a rib injury. They were without the suspended Steven MacDonald for this 3pm throw up. It took until the 51 minute before Newtonmore took the lead with Chris Sellar firing home. Calum Stewart made it 2-0 just 12 minutes from time. The only down side for ‘More was that defender Rory Kennedy and forward John MacKenzie have been added to their injury list.
Kinlochshiel 3 Kyles Athletic 2 Kinlochshiel came from 2-0 down to beat Kyles Athletic 3-2 in their clash at Kirkton. The visitors travelled without Calum Miller and Dunkie Kerr whilst Andrew King was only fit enough to take up a place on the bench. Roberto Zavaroni put Kyles ahead after 17 minutes and Roddy MacDonald doubled their advantage on 28 minutes. However Shiel’s Gordie MacDonald pulled a goal back just 3 minutes later and John MacRae squared the game a minute before the break. The only goal of the second half came on 69 minutes and Gordie MacDonald’s second strike of the afternoon gave Kinlochshiel their second home win over Kyles in successive seasons. One blemish on the day for Johnston Gill’s side was a hamstring injury suffered by Finlay MacRae on the hour mark which could keep him out of action for several weeks although he did make a speedy return from a hamstring injury last season.
Kingussie 0 Lovat 1 Lovat beat Kingussie 1-0 to record their first league win of the season in their 3pm throw up at the Dell. The home side were without the suspended Savio Genini whilst the Borthwick trio of Thomas, Rory and Ryan were all missing. Lovat’s Lewis Tawse scored the only goal of the game after 33 minutes. To make matters worse for Kingussie, youngster Rory MacKeachan suffered a snapped ligament in his shoulder towards the end of the game and will be out of action for several weeks.
Glenurquhart 2 Fort William 2 Glenurquhart and Fort William shared the points following a 2-2 draw at Blairbeg. Much of the pre-match talk surrounded a lengthy Fort William absentee list. They travelled without the suspended Niall MacPhee, injured trio Gordie MacKinnon, Liam McIntyre and Sean Cameron, Gary Innes, who as abroad with his band, and Duncan Rodger, Bryan Simpson and Jack Fraser who were at a stag weekend. However the Glen were also without several of their main players and the injured John Barr was joined on the substitutes’ bench by co-managers Fraser MacKenzie and Drew McNeil. Arran MacPhee was back in the Fort starting line-up following a prolonged spell on the sidelines with a shoulder injury and he got the opening goal after 12 minutes. Neale Reid made it 1-1 a minute before the break and David Smart put the home side ahead with a 57 minute strike. However the Fort were not to be denied and a 72 minute effort from Daniel Stewart earned them a point. The Glen will regret some missed chances including a good opportunity passed up by Ruairidh Cameron.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Strathglass 0 Kilmallie 6 League leaders Kilmallie, with Duncan Kelly back in charge after a holiday break, were too strong for Strathglass at Cannich. A Liam MacDonald double on 2 and 23 minutes put the visitors 2-0 up at the break. Seb MacMillan made it 3-0 a couple of minutes into the second half and Liam Cameron made it 4-0 on 49 minutes. Martin Munro got a fifth 5 minutes from time and Liam MacDonald rounded off a good day by completing his hat-trick at the death.
Skye Camanachd 0 Beauly 1 A David MacLean strike after just 5 minutes was all the separated Skye Camanachd and Beauly at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. The home side were without Chris Rose, Shaun Hedley, Iain Murray and Kenny MacLeod whilst full forward Marc MacLachlan was again missing for Beauly with an eye injury. In a game of few chances, MacLean’s goal came following a corner on the left. The full centre sent a low 25 yard drive into the bottom corner of the Skye net. Second place Beauly are now three points ahead of third place Skye and they host league leaders Kilmallie next weekend.
Inverness 0 Caberfeidh 3 Two injury time strikes from Craig Morrison sealed Caberfeidh’s 3-0 win against Inverness at the Bught Park. Colin MacLennan had given Cabers a 35 minute lead and the match remained in the balance until Morrison’s late double. Caberfeidh remain fourth in the table.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Glenorchy 2 Kilmory 2 Glenorchy missed out on the chance to go top of the table when they could only draw 2-2 with Kilmory at Mart Park. Ewan Carmichael put the visitors ahead after 33 minutes only for John MacNulty to level 5 minutes before the break. Ally MacLennan looked to have won it for Kilmory with a 67 minute goal but Des MacNulty snatched a point for Glenorchy when he netted a minute from time. The visitors had Mark Robertson red carded by referee Ronnie Campbell.
Aberdour 5 Taynuilt 2 Aberdour’s good run continued when they beat Taynuilt 5-2 in Fife. Former Lochcarron player John MacLellan put Aberdour ahead after 6 minutes but Ryan Gillies on 20 minutes and Fraser MacMillan on 35 minutes gave Taynuilt the advantage at the break. Craig Matheson made it 2-2 a couple of minutes into the second half and the remainder of the game belonged to Aberdour. John MacLellan made it 3-2 on 65 minutes and another former Lochcarron player, Darren Coyle, fired home to make it 4-2 on 75 minutes. Michael Lightbody competed the 5-2 victory when he was on target 7 minutes from time. Aberdour, who finished bottom of the table last term, are now fourth, level on points with third placed Oban Celtic.
Balliemore Cup – First Round Oban Celtic 0 Bute 1 Bute are through to the second round of the Balliemore Cup after a 1-0 win over the Oban Celtic first team in their noon clash at Mossfield. Robert Walker scored the only goal of the game 3 minutes into the second half.
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup – First Round Kingussie 2 Aberdeen University 1 Holders Kingussie are through to the next round of the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup following a 2-1 extra time win over Aberdeen University at the Dell. This game was a tale of two Kingussie goalkeepers with the opening goals coming early in the game. Kingussie played Michael Clark in goal as he was carrying an injury so regular keeper Russell Menzies joined the attack. It was Menzies who gave Kings the lead after 24 minutes only for Noel Kenneally to level just 3 minutes later. There was no further scoring during the regulation 90 minutes so referee John Sloggie took the match to an extra-time period. That looked set to end in deadlock too until Kingussie boss Michael Falconer moved Michael Clark into attack with Russell Menzies going back in goal. And it was veteran Clark who got the winner when he volleyed into the net just 2 minutes from the end of extra time.
Boleskine 1 Newtonmore 5 2012 runners up Newtonmore are also through following a 5-1 win over Boleskine at Farr. Sam Richardson and David Wylde hit double for ‘More with Neil Stewart getting the other. Gavin Butterworth countered for the home side.
Lochaber 1 Skye Camanachd 2 Skye Camanachd safely negotiated a tricky tie against Lochaber at Spean Bridge. Paul MacKinnon and Angie MacDonald put the Islanders two goals to the good in the first half. Duncan MacKinnon, who was back in the Lochaber side after injury, pulled a goal back in what was a scrappy second half. Skye youngster Iain “Spod” Macleod required three stitches to a knee injury and travelled home later in the evening.
Ballachulish 4 Kinlochshiel 1 Ballachulish could be a good bet in this year’s competition and they beat Kinlochshiel 4-1 at Jubilee Park. A Duncan MacDonald brace on 4 and 24 minutes, either side of a 6 minute Lorne Brown effort, put them 3-0 ahead although the visitors pulled a goal back through Aedan MacRae on 36 minutes. Duncan MacDonald completed his hat-trick with a strike 5 minutes from time.
Glengarry 8 Strathspey Camanachd 0 Strathspey Camanachd travelled to Craigard to play Glengarry in what was their first cup tie since entering the league. However they found the more experienced ‘Garry side to be difficult opponents. Shaun Sloggie gave the hosts a 4 minute lead. Daniel MacLennan scored twice on 33 and 40 minutes, either side of a 35 minute Scott MacDonald effort to give Glengarry a 4-0 half time advantage. Arran Clark made it five on 55 minutes before Daniel MacLennan completed his hat-trick on 64 minutes. Arran Clark rounded of the scoring as he completed his hat-trick on 69 and 73 minutes.
Inveraray 3 Glasgow Mid Argyll 1 Inveraray beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-1 at the Winterton. Fraser Watt after 10 minutes and Ross Anderson on 32 minutes gave the home side a 2-0 interval advantage. Andy Stewart made it 3-0 on the hour mark and although Euan Forsyth pulled a goal back 60 seconds later, Inveraray saw out the remainder of the game.
Inverness 1 Lovat 12 Inverness took an early lead when Scott Watson scored after 3 minutes against Lovat at the Bught Park. However from then on it was one-way traffic towards the Inverness goal. Iain Nicolson joined Lovat from Skye Camanachd through the week and he grabbed a hat-trick as did Fraser Gallacher. Graham MacMillan and Rory Campbell notched doubles with Danny Kelly and Thomas Fraser pushing forward to get their names on the scoresheet too.
Lochcarron 11 Lochbroom 0 Lochcarron’s resurgence continued as they over-whelmed Lochbroom 11-0 at Battery Park. Ross Brown’s return has been a significant factor in Lochcarron’s change of fortune and he scored five times. Gregor Cushnie and Kenny Cushnie each bagged doubles with Crisdean Finlayson and David MacCuish getting the others.
Lochside Rovers 4 Oban Celtic 2 Lochside Rovers beat a reserve Oban Celtic side, which has entered the Aberdein Considine Sutherland and Bullough Cups this season, 4-2 in Oban. Alan MacKie put Celtic ahead after just 9 minutes but Brian MacCallum on the half hour and Malcolm Clark a couple of minutes later put Lochside ahead in this derby tie. Oban Celtic refused to lie down though and Sandy MacLeod made it 2-2 just 5 minutes into the second half. The sides remained level until 8 minutes from time when Shaun Morgan put Lochside 3-2 in front and Brian MacCallum got his second on 86 minutes to round off a 4-2 win.
Tayforth 1 Glenurquhart 1 (Glenurquhart won 2–1 on penalties) Brendan Duggan gave Tayforth a 15 minute lead against Glenurquhart. Glen player / manager Iain MacLeod levelled a couple of minutes from the break. There was no further scoring so the tie went all the way to a penalty shoot-out which Glenurquhart won 2-1 courtesy of penalties from Daniel MacKintosh and Cairn Urquhart.
Ardnamurchan W/O v Strathglass Ardnamurchan are through to the next round as Strathglass were unable to raise a team for their trip south.
Beauly W/O v Bute Bute were unable to field a team for their journey to Braeview Park so Beauly were awarded the tie.
Kyles Athletic W/O v Caberfeidh Kyles Athletic have been given a walk-over as Caberfeidh were unable to field a team for their tie at Tighnabruaich. |
