03 October 2013 Kyles Athletic inflicted Newtonmore’s first Orion Group Premiership defeat of the season and Ballachulish forced a Marine Harvest South Division 2 title play-off following the shinty action on Saturday 28 September 2013.
Orion Group Premiership Kyles Athletic 5 Newtonmore 4 Kyles Athletic inflicted Newtonmore’s first Orion Group Premiership defeat of the season when they ran out 5-4 winners following a ding-dong battle at Tighnabruaich. Visiting manager Paul John MacKintosh was without Cameron Binnie as his booking in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final took him over the points threshold. Fraser MacKintosh put ‘More ahead on 8 minutes but Roddy MacDonald levelled on 12 minutes. Roddy MacDonald got his second goal of the afternoon to put Kyles 2-1 ahead after 21 minutes but Fraser MacKintosh got his second a minute before the break to restore parity. A quick-fire Glen MacKintosh brace on 50 and 52 minutes seemed to give Newtonmore the advantage but John Whyte on the hour and a hat-trick goal from Roddy MacDonald after 67 minutes made it 4-4. Dunkie Kerr snatched the winning goal as he made it 5-4 on 73 minutes to lift Kyles into seventh place in the table with three games remaining.
Lovat 1 Fort William 1 Fort William were officially relegated from the Orion Group Premiership following their 1-1 draw with Lovat at Balgate. The home side’s manager Allan MacRae was without Lorne MacKay and Owen Ferguson. Fort William co-managers Victor Smith and Adam Robertson travelled with a much-changed squad with several younger players given a chance to shine. Lovat got off to a great start when Kevin Bartlett put them ahead after just 3 minutes. However Fort’s Bryan Simpson found the back of the net on 25 minutes to earn the visitors a point. This is the first time Fort William have been relegated from shinty's top division since the national league structure was introduced in the mid-90s.

Marine Harvest North Division 2 Skye Camanachd 1 Kinlochshiel 1 Skye Camanachd and Kinlochshiel shared the points following a 1-1 draw at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Donnie Martin took charge of the Island side and with the first team programme complete, he boosted his squad with the inclusion of Chris Rose, Ally MacDonald and Jordan Murchison. Aonghas MacDonald started in goal and David MacInnes was free of suspension and Stewart Grant was given a place on the bench after a spell working in America. However the Skye defence had to be revamped with captain David Grant, Andrew Banks, Neil John Campbell and keeper Michael Nicolson all unavailable. Kinlochshiel manager Colin Fraser travelled with a strong squad and his line-up included eight players – keeper Scott Kennedy, Alasdair Nixon, David Falconer, Conall Fraser, Donald Nixon, Jordan Fraser and Scotland internationals Keith MacRae and John MacRae – who were in the 14 man ‘Shiel first team squad which drew 3-3 with Inveraray in the Orion Group Premiership the previous weekend. Colin MacDiarmid missed out through injury. Just when it looked as if the first half would end scoreless, the visitors went in front. Aonghas MacDonald seemed to have an Alasdair MacRae low shot from 18 yards covered but the ball took a wicked deflection off a home defender to wrong-foot the Skye keeper and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Skye custodian Aonghas MacDonald was the busier of the two keepers but ‘Shiel keeper Scott Kennedy made a quite outstanding save when he denied Skye’s Paul MacKinnon in the second half. Skye’s were not to be denied though and their some-what fortuitous equalising goal came a couple of minutes from time when an Angie MacDonald effort hit the ground and spun over keeper Scott Kennedy’s head into the net to make it 1-1. The sides largely cancelled eachother out over the piece and Skye finish third in the league whilst Kinlochshiel remain in bottom spot.
Beauly 4 Glengarry 2 Beauly ran out 4-2 winners against Glengarry at Braeview Park. Martin Davidson put Beauly ahead on 18 minutes and Willie Ferguson on 38 minutes and James Cameron a couple of minutes later gave the home side what seemed like a comfortable 3-0 lead at the break. Glengarry’s Martin Cameron pulled a goal back on 52 minutes only for former Uist Camanachd player Ewen Campbell to extend Beauly’s three goal advantage on 68 minutes. Stuart MacArthur scored the final goal of the game on 73 minutes to make it 4-2. There will be more to come on this game though as James Cameron was suspended for the home side until he served a two game first team suspension. This also meant that he wasn’t eligible to play for the Beauly reserves until the first team suspension had been served. However Beauly fielded Cameron in the match and this will put their victory in doubt with the Camanachd’s Behaviour in Sport committee likely to rule on the matter.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Ballachulish 3 Inveraray 1 Ballachulish secured a Marine Harvest South Division 2 title play-off against Kyles Athletic after they beat Inveraray 3-1 at Jubilee Park. Ballachulish full back David Campbell was unavailable as he served the second game of a two match suspension for a points accumulation. All the goals came in the first half and Lorne Brown continued his good recent scoring run with a 10 minute goal. However Inveraray let the home side know that they would not have it their own way when Grant Griffin, who had spent the last two years in Australia, equalised on 29 minutes. Balla’ were not to be denied though and Michael Slezas on 34 minutes and John MacDonald just 5 minutes before the break, put the home side 3-1 in the lead. However the game ended on a sour note for Ballachulish when the influential John MacDonald was sent off by referee Alex MacVicar which means that he will miss next weekend’s title play-off against Kyles Athletic.
