12 August 2013 Newtonmore will play Kyles Athletic in the 2013 Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final and following the shinty fixtures on Saturday 10 August 2013.
Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup - Semi Final Fort William 0 Newtonmore 7 Newtonmore will face Kyles Athletic in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup Final following their 7-0 win over Fort William in their BBC Alba live television 4.05pm clash at the Bught Park. Newtonmore manager Paul John MacKintosh was determined that his squad stayed focused ahead of the tie as they were most peoples’ heavy favourites to reach the final. Norman Campbell and Glen MacKintosh returned for ‘More after missing the 7-0 league win over Oban Camanachd a fortnight ago. Fort William have been finding goals difficult to come by and their cause hasn’t been helped by the loss of Gary Innes due to work commitments. However Bryan Simpson started his return from injury in the 0-0 draw with Glenurquhart last weekend and he started on the bench where his presence boosted co-managers Victor Smith and Adam Robertson’s options. Newtonmore won the toss and played with the Bught Park breeze at the backs. Newtonmore went in front after just 4 minutes with a neatly worked goal. Fraser MacKintosh slipped the ball to Rory Kennedy on the ‘More right. Danny MacRae let Kennedy’s cross run on to Glen MacKintosh in space and he slotted the ball low into the net to make it 1-0. Newtonmore doubled their advantage on 18 minutes. Glen MacKintosh found Danny MacRae with a short free-hit and MacRae blasted the ball over Paul MacKay’s shoulder to make it 2-0. One of the games main talking points came on 28 minutes when a reckless Steven Stewart challenge in the middle of the park left Newtonmore’s Rory Kennedy writhing on the ground. Steven Stewart was booked by referee Graham Cameron and was very fortunate not to be sent off. Kennedy had to leave the field with a leg and hand injury and it was later confirmed that he’ll need pins inserted in a broken finger. John MacKenzie came on in his place of Kennedy. Fort William fell 3-0 behind a couple of minutes before the break. A Steven MacDonald ball forward was deflected into the path of substitute John MacKenzie and he turned and drove the ball across keeper MacKay and into the net at the goalie’s left post. John MacKenzie got his second and Newtonmore’s fourth goal on 61 minutes. MacKenzie collected a Glen MacKintosh pass before turning and firing past an unsighted Paul MacKay. Danny MacRae’s second goal of the afternoon made it 5-0 just 4 minutes later after a surging Glen MacKintosh run at the heart of the Fort William defence. MacKintosh pushed the ball to Danny MacRae on his right and MacRae’s first time shot gave Paul MacKay no chance. Danny MacRae completed his hat-trick on 72 minutes after a one-two with John MacKenzie, and a slip by Fort full back Neil Robertson, left him free in front of goal. Paul MacKay got his caman to the shot but the sheer power of MacRae’s effort took the ball into the roof of the net. Ryan Campbell came on in attack for Fort William in place of Daniel Stewart seconds later. A double Michael Richie save on 79 minutes denied both Bryan Simpson and Jack Fraser a consolation goal. BBC Alba man of the match Danny MacRae made it 7-0 just 9 minutes from time as he took his personal tally for the afternoon to four goals. John MacKenzie hit the bar with a looping shot and Paul MacKay saved Glen MacKintosh’s attempt from the rebound but Danny MacRae followed up to stroke the ball home. Newtonmore will now put thoughts of the Camanachd Cup Final against Kyles Athletic to one side as they prepare for next weekend’s Artemis Macaulay Cup Final against who else but Kyles Athletic.
Orion Group Premiership Glenurquhart 2 Lovat 3 A last gasp Lorne MacKay goal saw Lovat edge their 3pm derby meeting with Glenurquhart at Blairbeg. Glenurquhart co-managers Fraser MacKenzie and Drew McNeil had Eddie Tembo and Ewan Brady free of a two match ban following their red cards in the league meeting with Kingussie. Neale Reid also returned after missing the goalless draw with Fort William but there was no Andrew Corrigan. John Barr was available for the Glen but he will miss their next match as he serves a one match ban for a points accumulation. Lovat manager Allan MacRae was minus defender Callum Cruden who started a two match ban for a points accumulation. Craig Mainland returned but his brother Martin Mainland remained on the injury list. Neale Reid put the Glen ahead on 29 minutes but Kevin Bartlett equalised seconds before half time with not enough time left for referee Deek Cameron to restart the game. Glen full forward Lewis MacLennan restored the home side’s advantage 4 minutes into the second half only for Owen Ferguson to make it 2-2 on 74 minutes. The Glen came within a whisker of taking both points when a James MacPherson drive came back off the crossbar. However Lorne MacKay, who had earlier left the field for treatment to a suspected broken nose, got the winner on the stroke of full time; again there was again not enough time left to restart the match. The final score was harsh on Glenurquhart but it means that Lovat now trail leaders Newtonmore by three points but they have now played two more games. If Lovat win their remaining four games, they can reach 28 points so ‘More need six more points from their remaining six matches to retain the title.
Kyles Athletic 1 Kinlochshiel 1 An injury time Donald Irvine penalty earned Kyles Athletic a point in a 1-1 draw with Kinlochshiel in their 2pm throw up at the Winterton. Kyles’ defender Zak Coley was missing as he was on holiday but he will be back in time for next weekend’s Artemis Macaulay Cup Final against Newtonmore. With Kinlochshiel keeper Scott Kennedy out with an ankle and second team goalie Iain Cameron unavailable, second team defender Ewan Falconer took over in goal. Full forward John MacRae was available for ‘Shiel but he will miss the home match with Lovat next weekend as he serves a one match ban for a points accumulation. David Falconer, who has been troubled by a groin injury, fired the visitors into a 24 minute lead. There was no further scoring until second half injury time when the home forwards claimed there had been a kick inside the Kinlochshiel D. Referee Innes Wood awarded a penalty after consulting with the goal judge; a decision which left the ‘Shiel camp furious. Kyles Athletic’s Glasgow Celtic Society Cup Final spot-hit hero Donald Irvine stepped forward to score to make it 1-1 and ensure a share of the points. The result leaves Fort William, even with their games in hand, looking more isolated in the second relegation spot.
Inveraray 1 Lochaber 2 Lochaber’s exceptional run of results under the tenure of acting manager Robert Johnstone continued when they beat Inveraray 2-1 in their noon throw up at the Winterton. Inveraray co-manager Gary MacPherson had to watch from the sidelines as he served a one match ban for a points accumulation. Lochaber were without the suspended Neil MacDonald who lost his appeal over a two game ban handed down by the Camanachd Association Disciplinary Committee following at incident after the final whistle in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup tie with Glenurquhart on 1 June 2013. Kevin Ferguson’s scoring exploits for the Spean Bridge side’s second team saw him included and he scored the only goal of the first half a couple of minutes before the half time whistle. And that’s the way it stayed until 5 minutes from time when a Lewis MacNicol strike seemed to have secured Inveraray their second successive 1-1 home draw. However Lochaber had other ideas and with just 2 minutes remaining, their Scottish international Shaun Nicolson fired home to give his side the win and two priceless points. Lochaber now go third in the table, albeit that they have played more games than the teams around about them, but their top fight status now looks secure and that seemed unlikely a couple of months ago.
Marine Harvest North Division 1 Strathglass 1 Kilmallie 4 Kilmallie were confirmed as Marine Harvest North Division 1 champions following their 4-1 win over Strathglass in their 2pm throw up at Cannich. Kilmallie manager Duncan Kelly interrupted a holiday abroad to be with his team. Defender Andrew Fraser returned for Callum Duff’s Strathglass side whilst Josh Grant took over from veteran Stevie MacLachlan in goal. Scotland U17 forward Martin Munro kept his good recent scoring run going when he netted after just 2 minutes. Michael Rodger made it 2-0 on 13 minutes and although a 20 minute Darren Reid strike reduced the deficit, Michael Rodger scored his second goal of the game 3 minutes later to give Kilmallie a 3-1 interval lead. It was fitting that Kilmallie captain and Scottish international John Stewart scored the final goal 15 minutes from time to make it 4-1. Marine Harvest’s Davie Corrigan presented the Marine Harvest North Division 1 trophy to Kilmallie captain John Stewart. However Kilmallie will not step up to next season’s top division as the revamped league set up sees the Orion Group Premiership reduce in number by two teams. The Canal Parks side will instead compete in the new national second tier.
Beauly 0 Skye Camanachd 1 Beauly left Skye Camanachd outsiders for a third place league finish following their 1-0 win in their 2pm throw up at Braeview Park. Skye first team manager Willie MacRae remained without injured duo Danny Morrison and Darryl Macintosh. Kenny MacLeod and Shockie MacLennan were also missing as was Neil MacVicar. However Gilleasbuig MacDonald, Kenny Campbell and Chris MacLennan were all back after missing the 1-0 defeat to Caberfeidh a fortnight ago. There was a place on the bench for second team captain David Grant who was available after suspension. Beauly were strong opposition and they had, up until recently, been contesting trophies on three fronts but defeats to Kyles Athletic, Bute and Kilmallie ended their progress in the Scottish Hydro Camanachd Cup, the Balliemore Cup and Marine Harvest North Division 1. Beauly co-managers Stephen MacLean and Iain Morrison had utility player David Groat available after he served a one match ban for his red card in the Balliemore Cup Final but full back Scott MacLeod was still injured. Skye had a strong claim for an early penalty after Chris MacLennan seemed to be fouled by home keeper MacKay Murray after he had been put clean through on goal but referee Billy Wotherspoon waved away their appeals. The only goal of the game came 3 minutes into the second half when a ball into the Skye goal area took a wicked bounce and Marc MacLachlan reacted first to control the ball before producing a fine finish to give Beauly a 1-0 lead. Skye lost keeper Jamie Gannon had to concede to a groin injury sustained in the first half so David Grant came on in his place to become the sixth keeper – after Jamie Gannon, Ross Graham, Aonghas MacDonald, Michael Nicolson and Iain MacLeod – to represent the Skye first or second teams this season. Grant did well to palm a Sean Stewart shot around the post in what was a game of few efforts on goal. Third place Skye have now completed their league programme and they hold a one point advantage over fourth place Caberfeidh who have two games to go. The team which finishes third will qualify for a place in the new national second tier which comes into effect next season.
Marine Harvest South Division 1 Glenorchy 2 Glasgow Mid Argyll 0 Top of the table Glasgow Mid Argyll suffered their first league defeat of the season when they lost 2-0 to Glenorchy in their 2pm throw up at Mart Park, Dalmally. Grant MacPherson got the opening goal 6 minutes into the second half and Kieran MacKay made it 2-0 just 6 minutes from time to keep Glenorchy’s title hopes alive.
Bute 3 Lochside Rovers 0 Bute are level on points with Glasgow Mid Argyll and Glenorchy at the top of the table after 3-0 triumph ensured they safely negotiated a tricky match against Lochside Rovers in what was a 2pm throw up at the Meadows. Bute’s David Whitelaw was free of suspension after serving a one match ban. All the goals came in the first half and James Craig got the Islanders off to a good start with a goal after 13 minutes and the same player added a second on 40 minutes. Ace marksman Robert Walker made it 3-0 a couple of minutes before the break. Glasgow Mid Argyll now just lead Bute on goal difference with the sides due to meet at Yoker next weekend. Third place Glenorchy are also tied at the top with 20 points but they have played three games more than their rivals.
Strachur 2 Oban Celtic 1 Strachur moved off the bottom of the table at Kilmory’s expense with a 2-1 win over Oban Celtic in their 2pm throw up at the Strachurmore Sports Centre. The home side went in front on 5 minutes when referee John MacGregor awarded them a penalty. Steven Wilson stepped up to score from the spot. The Oban side levelled 4 minutes from the break when Scotland U17 defender Daniel Madej scored. The winning goal came 9 minutes from time as Strachur’s Duncan Smart scored to give his side their second league win of the season. Strachur’s Ewan MacDonald was sent off by referee John MacGregor. There are a number of clubs in the league with 2014 Artemis Macaulay Cup qualification places to play for. The top eight North and top eight South teams qualify for the tournament and with Orion Group Premiership sides Inveraray, Kyles Athletic and Oban Camanachd guaranteed entry as South representatives, and Glasgow Mid Argyll, Bute and Glenorchy likely to join them, this leaves Aberdour, Oban Celtic, and Taynuilt as the likely contenders for the two remaining places with Strachur and Kilmory having just an outside chance of entry.
Marine Harvest North Division 2 Newtonmore 3 Fort William 0 League leaders Newtonmore stay out in front following a 3-0 win over Fort William in their noon throw up at the Eilan. Chris Sellar scored the only goal of the first half on 24 minutes. Martin Hall made it 2-0 on 53 minutes and Chris Sellar wrapped up the win with his second and Newtonmore’s third goal on 61 minutes. Newtonmore now lead second place Lovat by two points and they have a game in hand.
Aberdeen University 1 Lovat 1 Second place Lovat shared the points with Aberdeen University following a 1-1 draw in their 2pm throw up at Balgownie. The Students were without David Fraser who served a one match ban for a points accumulation. Lovat had severe team raising difficulties and manager Graeme MacMillan had thirteen call-offs ahead of the trip. He included his sons Ronan MacMillan and Cameron MacMillan in the squad with the latter still to start High School. Another youngster, Scott MacKenzie, was also called into the squad. Fraser Gallacher gave Lovat a 10 minute lead but Stuart Cameron drew the home side level on 28 minutes. The Aberdeen side remain bottom of the table but they are level on points with Glengarry and Kinlochshiel.
Skye Camanachd 1 Glengarry 0 Skye Camanachd stay third as they beat Glengarry 1-0 in their 2pm throw up at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree. Donnie Martin took charge of the Skye side once again for this 2pm throw up and he was without the services of keeper Ross Graham so U17 player Iain MacLeod took over in goal. Skye second team captain David Grant was also missing as he had been called up by the first team and Paul MacKinnon was another absentee. Neil MacVicar started at full centre as work commitments meant he was unable to travel with the first team. Ally “Spod” MacLeod also made his first appearance after a hand injury. Glengarry have found goals hard to come by this season so manager Ewen Cameron deployed regular full back Mathew Clark at full forward. ‘Garry lost 4-1 to Kingussie in their last outing a fortnight ago but they played that game with just eleven players and they were nearer full strength for this one. Glengarry made the better start but Skye had the ball in the net when Angie MacDonald played a superbly timed pass into the path of Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod. ‘Garry keeper Gordon MacDonald came off his line to block MacLeod’s shot at goal and the rebound fell for Stephen Murchison who tucked the ball low into the net. However the goal judge correctly flagged to indicate that Ally “Cleodi” MacLeod was in an offside position so the goal didn’t stand. Skye took the lead on 62 minutes when a Magnus Burd corner from the left was knocked down by Angie MacDonald and Stephen Murchison swept a first time shot high into the net to make it 1-0. A midfield clash between Skye’s David MacInnes and Scott MacDonald of Glengarry saw referee David Stafford send both players from the park in what was another correct decision by the official. Glengarry had a great chance to level when Skye were penalised for a kick inside the area. Daniel MacLennan stepped up to take the penalty but he put the ball wide of Iain MacLeod’s left post. Daniel MacLennan saw a snap-shop well saved with his feet by Iain MacLeod but other than that, the Skye goal wasn’t threatened.
Glenurquhart 0 Kingussie 3 Glenurquhart lost 3-0 to Kingussie in their noon meeting at Blairbeg. Rory MacGregor put Kingussie ahead with a long range effort on 12 minutes and a Savio Genini double on 31 and 34 minutes made it 3-0. Kingussie’s John Gibson came on for Jake MacPherson midway through the first half with MacPherson leaving the field with a suspected broken thumb. Although the home side trailed at the break, they had their fair share of possession but Kingussie were more clinical in front of goal. Lee Bain featured at full back for Kingussie and he was outstanding throughout the game. Glenurquhart remain fourth whilst Kingussie remain sixth.
Kinlochshiel P Beauly P The 2pm throw up between Kinlochshiel and Beauly at Kirkton at Kirkton was postponed due to the sad passing earlier in the week of Kinlochshiel youth coach Ray Coghill. The match will now take place next weekend with a noon throw up.
Marine Harvest South Division 2 Inveraray 7 Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 The match between Inveraray and Glasgow Mid Argyll at the Winterton was put back to Wednesday 7 August 2013 with a 7pm throw up. There were goals galore as the home side took the points with a 7-3 win. Louis Clark put GMA ahead on 15 minutes but a 23 minute Kenny Kirkhope strike made it 1-1. It remained that way until two goals just before the break gave Inveraray the advantage. First, senior team co-manager Garry MacPherson shot home on 41 minutes and then Ross Anderson made it 3-1 a minute before the half time. Inveraray pressed their advantage and Fraser Watt added a fourth just 4 minutes into the second half and although Mark Bain reduced the deficit on 54 minutes, Fraser Watt’s second on 63 minutes made it 5-2. Mark Bain got his second and GMA’s third on 76 minutes but Fraser Watt went on to complete his hat-trick with a goal on 81 minutes to make it 6-3. Allan Cameron was on target 4 minutes from time to round off a 7-3 victory.
Col Glen 2 Ballachulish 6 Third place Ballachulish returned to league action and they headed home from their trip to second place Col Glen with both points following a 6-2 win. John MacDonald was available for ‘Balla but he will miss their next match as he serves a one match ban for a points accumulation. Stuart MacKellar put Col Glen in front with a goal on 13 minutes but Michael Slezas levelled on 22 minutes. Fraser Brown put the home side back in front on 28 minutes but Michael Slezas second strike of the afternoon on the stroke of half time made it 2-2. John MacDonald put Ballachulish ahead for the first time in the match a minute into the second half. Cain MacPhee made it 4-2 with a goal on the hour mark. Michael Slezas completed his hat-trick on 79 minutes and John MacDonald’s second goal of the game just 3 minutes later sealed a 6-2 win. Balla’ are now just a point behind Col Glen with five games in hand. The Jubilee Park side trail leaders Kyles Athletic by eight points but they have four games in hand as they play catch up with their fixtures because of their cup exploits.
