16 July 2014 Shinty Historian Dr Hugh Dan MacLennan will be a speaker in a celebration of Scotland’s Commonwealth Exhibitions at the Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow. There will be a series of exciting talks which bring together some of Scotland's leading archivists, writers, academic researchers and performers. These talks delve into the past, present and future of Scottish sport. All talks will take place at the Scottish Music Centre between 3pm and 4pm which includes time for a question and answer session All talks are free but there is limited capacity. The full programme is as follows: Thursday 24 July 2014 - A panel of archivists, curators and historians discuss the sources available for the study of Scotland’s sporting heritage. Friday 25 July 2014 - Dr Hugh Dan MacLennan introduces Scotland’s Sporting Trophies, reflecting on achievements and world class craftsmanship. Saturday 26 July 2014 -Professor Grant Jarvie discusses Scotland's Sporting Trophies - More Than a Game: Scottish Sport from its trophies to winning friends. Sunday 27 July 2014 -Dr Hugh Dan MacLennan with Stòras Prìseil Nàiseanta - duaisean spòrs na h-Alba (talk presented in Gaelic). Monday 28 July 2014 -Ged O’Brien focuses on Sport in Glasgow. Tuesday 29 July 2014 -DrFiona Skillen will talk about the history of Scottish women in sport. Wednesday 30 July 2014 -George McNeill & ‘Wonder Fools’ perform an extract of their show 'McNeill of Tranent; George's amazing tale as one of the world’s fastest athletes. Thursday 31 July 2014 - Professor Richard Haynes delivers Strange Tales from the Games Friday 1 August 2014 - Curator Neil Johnson-Symington on 'Blood, Sweat & Gears' - Glasgow Museum’s unique collaboration with Scottish Paralympic tandem cyclists Aileen McGlynn & Louise Haston. Saturday 2 August 2014 – Catrin Evans (A Moments Peace): The search for her story - Revealing the discoveries and the struggles when researching women in sport. Sunday 3 August 2014 - Maureen McGonigle will speak on Scottish women in sport. |
