25 March 2017 An increasing number of newspapers carry shinty match reports and photographs on a weekly basis. The coverage includes previews on the weekend games to match reports and result based reviews to reflect on the recent games. The Oban Times, incorporating the Lochaber News, collected the 2016 Marine Harvest Media award for their two-page, broadsheet coverage which includes a report on all men’s and women’s games as well as some great photographs. The West Highland Free Press concentrates on the west coast shinty action, heavily featuring Skye Camanachd, Kinlochshiel and Lochcarron. However it does also provide general coverage on the game. The Badenoch & Strathspey Herald focuses on the Badenoch area and the paper can now be picked up throughout the Highland s including Skye outlets such as MacIntyre’s Newsagents, Portree. The Inverness Courier mainly focuses on the Moray Firth area and their Tuesday and Thursday editions have a keen interest on clubs such as Inverness, Boleskine, Glenurquhart, Strathglass, Lovat and Beauly. The Highland News previews and reviews the weekend shinty action across all divisions on a weekly basis. The Stornoway Gazette takes a special interest in Lewis Camanachd’s fortunes and they have a detailed match report on their games in their weekly editions. The Scotsman carries previews of the top flight shinty action every Saturday, results, match information and scorers in the Scotland on Sunday and a reflection piece in the Monday edition of the Scotsman. The Sunday Post continues to feature a round-up of the top division shinty scores and scorers. The National focuses on a main match each week and carries a good round up of the other main games in their Monday edition. The Press & Journal has Friday preview and Monday reviews along with some superb pictures. The Herald and Sunday Herald include a score and scorers piece. This coverage can only continue if shinty enthusiasts buy their favourite papers, playing their part in supporting shinty’s place in the media world. |
