Strathglass 1 Skye Camanachd 10 | |
20 June 2017 Skye Camanachd are through to the Strathdearn Cup semi-finals after they beat the Strathglass second team 10-1 at Cannich on Saturday 17 June 2017. The Strathglass seconds re-joined Marine Harvest North Division, a league below their Skye counter-parts, at the start of this season. Skye Camanachd second team player / manager Kenny MacLeod found places in his squad for seven players - Martin Pringle, James Morrison, Connor Gilpin, Ross Gordon, Calum Robertson, Stewart Taylor and Mark MacQueen - from the Skye Camanachd U17 squad which lifted the MacTavish Juvenile Cup the previous weekend. However the more experienced Iain Murray was with the Skye first team and Ruaraidh MacLeod, Jamie Gillies and DJ Gilpin remained out through injury. Martin Pringle gave Skye the lead on 19 minutes and Ross Gordon made it 2-0 on 24 minutes. Martin Pringle got his second on 25 minutes before completing his hat-trick to make it 4-0 on 36 minutes. Connor Gilpin added another on 41 minutes and there was a similarity to all Skye’s opening five goals as they got the ball wide, with the forwards making intelligent runs to get onto crosses in the danger-area. Some of the finishing around the D was very good although some early opportunities were also spurned. Skye player / manager Kenny MacLeod made it 6-0 on 43 minutes and the visitors took that lead into the interval. Skye introduced both substitutes – Stewart Taylor and Mark MacQueen – at half time with MacQueen making his debut at second team level. A second from Connor Gilpin on 53 minutes and a fourth from Martin Pringle on the hour made it 8-0. Pringle’s fourth was the goal of the game. Connor Gilpin floated a diagonal cross from the left and Martin Pringle killed the ball dead whilst running towards goal. Pringle, who was playing like a man on a mission, followed that up by firing the ball into the roof of the net. Seven of the Skye team had played 80 minutes the previous evening for the club’s U17 side in their 7-1 win over Kinlochshiel U17 at Kirkton and some were starting to look leggy so the Islanders took advantage of the rolling substitutes rule. Ross Gordon got his second on 71 minutes before Sam Cooper pulled a Strathglass goal back a couple of minutes later. There was still time for Ross Gordon to complete his hat-trick; scoring on 82 minutes to round off the 10-1 victory. The Skye Camanachd and Kingussie second teams now meet in the Strathdearn Cup semi-finals.
