Strathglass 1 Skye Camanachd 1 | |
11 March 2013 Skye Camanachd returned from Cannich with a point following a 1-1 draw with Strathglass in their Marine Harvest North Division 1 meeting on Saturday 9 March 2013. Strathglass manager Callum Duff was still without injured defenders Donald Fraser and Mark MacLeod whilst forward Robert Geddes started on the bench as he had a hamstring problem. Shockie MacLennan was back in the Skye squad after serving a one match ban following a points’ accumulation and he started in defence with Ally “Spod “MacLeod dropping onto the bench. Gilleasbuig MacDonald was a late call-off because of a family bereavement so there was a starting spot for Darryl Macintosh. Iain Murray stayed in Portree to play for the second team. Strathglass opted to play against the wind in the first half but they made the brighter start to the game. However it was Strathglass who took the lead from the penalty spot but the decision was hotly disputed by the Islanders. Referee Neil Ferguson penalised Skye defender Shockie MacLennan after discussion with the goal judge. Scott Douglas stepped up to take the penalty and his low shot went into the corner of the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Skye defender Neil MacVicar received a nasty head gash midway through the half. He was patched up and carried on playing but the wound later required a hospital visit and six stitches. Steve MacLachlan was proving to be a formidable barrier in the Strathglass goal as he saved with his feet three times from Danny Morrison and twice from Jordan Murchison. Skye came more into the game in the second half and most of the pressure was on the Strathglass goal. The visitors lost full centre Chris Rose with the recurrence of an ankle injury and Ally MacDonald came on in his place. Strathglass were restricted to breakaways and Michael Nicolson in the Skye goal made a good save with his chest. Skye continued to press the home goal but Strathglass keeper Steve MacLachlan was equal to their efforts. He made a terrific save to his left with his stick from a Kenny MacLeod 30 yarder to keep the Strath in front. Danny Morrison crashed a shot off MacLachlan’s post on 75 minutes after being set up by Jordan Murchison. Skye pushed Neil MacVicar into attack for the closing stages of the game with Ally “Spod” MacLeod coming on in defence. The switch played immediate dividends when MacVicar put the ball in the net. However Skye’s celebrations were short lived as the goal was ruled out for offside by referee Ferguson. Jordan Murchison dragged a low shot wide and substitute Ally MacDonald came within a whisker of levelling when his goal-bound effort was deflected wide. The visitors were not to be denied though and it was Neil MacVicar who levelled just 5 minutes from time. Danny Morrison fired in a wicked shot which keeper MacLachlan dived to save, low at his post but MacVicar followed up to slam the rebound into the net from a tight angle. The goal was no more than Skye deserved however Strathglass could have won it at the death when Scott Douglas latched onto a ball over the top of the Skye defence but he wasn’t able to get the ball past Skye keeper Michael Nicolson. Next up for Skye is a trip to the Canal Parks to play Kilmallie.
