Lochaber High was the venue for the draw and it is one of the Camanachd Association’s illustrious “Schools of Shinty” meaning shinty is now on the school curriculum and is going to be available to hundreds of pupils. The draw took place straight after a National 5 class completed their SQA practical examination on shinty. 2020 represents the third year of partnership with Alvance Aluminium (formerly Liberty). The draw was conducted by Tom Uppington and Rosie Flannigan from Alvance Aluminium. Tom Uppington said: “Alvance is passionate about investing in the local community – we have a few employees who play shinty and will be taking part in the Balliemore Cup this year. Arran MacPhee, who lifted last year’s Alvance Aluminium Balliemore Cup as Fort William captain, works with us and it is great to see first-hand the impact that our investment makes to the lives of people within and out-with the Lochaber area.” Camanachd Association CEO Derek Kier said: “We were delighted to conduct the Alvance Aluminium Balliemore Cup Draw at Lochaber High School, one of our new Schools of Shinty. This development will mean that shinty is delivered to hundreds of kids every week and reinforces our commitment to working in partnership with schools to improve the take up of our most ancient sport.” Yvonne Clarke, Principal Teacher of Health and Well-being with PE and HE, added: “Lochaber High School are delighted to become a school of shinty. Shinty is an integral part of the schools DNA and we are delighted to be able to play a part in providing additional opportunities for all children to participate in. “We currently run after school and lunchtime sessions and the next step for LHS will be the introduction of Indoor Shinty where there are plans to run “Inter House “ leagues. “Another avenue the school is exploring is introducing pupils from Glen Coe House our support base to the game of shinty and encourage greater participation. “The Camanachd Association’s Regional Development Manager Ronald Ross came to LHS last year to train all of the PE staff and put us through basic training and from this we have introduced shinty on the PE curriculum. “We are excited at continuing to have shinty as part of our PE Curriculum”. |
