Skye Camanachd U17 6 Glenurquhart U17 0 | |
12 May 2016 Skye Camanachd U17 beat Glenurquhart U17 6-0 in their London Shield meeting at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree on Wednesday 11 May 2016. This was Skye’s third London Shield fixture following a home win over Kinlochshiel U17 and an away defeat to Beauly U17. It was a warm evening in Portree for this 7pm throw up and Skye played towards the Struan Road end of the goal in the first half. Skye laid early siege on the Glen goal and a rocket-shot from Ross Gordon cannoned back off visiting keeper Christopher Mack and the goalie then made a good save to keep out a Sam MacPhee effort. Glenurquhart then mounted a couple of attacks of their own and a Ryan Porter drive from the left rose over the bar. Christopher Mack raced off his line to thwart Ruaraidh MacLeod as he cut in from the Skye left. Skye went in front on 18 minutes when James Pringle darted in towards the penalty spot and cracked a bouncing ball from the right, low past the keeper, beating him on his left side to make it 1-0. Glenurquhart thought they had levelled a couple of minutes later when Tommy Ellis thumped the ball high into the net but he was penalised by referee Caley MacLean for a “kick” just prior to striking the ball. Skye’s Martin Pringle was forced off with a wrist injury on 23 minutes and Stewart Taylor came on in his place. Skye increased their lead with a well-worked goal on 31 minutes. Referee MacLean played advantage as James Pringle was fouled in the act of playing the ball wide to Ross Gordon on the Skye left. Gordon cut the ball back to Ruaraidh MacLeod and he struck the ball low across the keeper, beating him on his left side. Ruaraidh MacLeod got his second goal of the evening on 40 minutes. It was a fine individual goal as MacLeod showed good close control as he weaved his way into the left of the D before slotting the ball low into the net. There was just enough time to restart the match before the referee sounded the half-time whistle and Skye took their 3-0 lead into the break. Glenurquhart had a period of pressure early in the second half without really troubling Skye keeper Jack Henderson. However it was Skye who were on target again on 46 minutes when a good ball forward from Skye full centre John Gillies caused problems in the Glen defence and James Pringle crashed a great shot from the left across a helpless Christopher Mack to make it 4-0. A minute later, John Gillies again surged forward from midfield in a move which ended when Stewart Tayler shot narrowly by the keeper’s right post. Glen’s Ryan Porter cut in from the right on 50 minutes but his shot was off-target. Skye made a double substitution on 53 minutes with Calum Robertson and Mark MacQueen coming on in the wing centre positions for Angie MacDonald and Sam MacPhee. Skye scored another good goal on 55 minutes. John Gillies found Ruaraidh MacLeod on the Skye left. MacLeod picked out Ross Gordon and he bulleted an unstoppable shot above the keeper’s head into the net. It was a great strike and it made it 5-0. Skye added a sixth a minute later. This time Calum Robertson fed the ball to Ruaraidh MacLeod who pulled the ball just wide to his right before scoring to complete his hat-trick. Skye goalie Jack Henderson was called into action on 67 minutes when he chested down a high ball from Tommy Ellis, hit from the centre circle, and the Glen forwards were unable to capitalise on the rebound. A Mark MacQueen shy from the right on 70 minutes was played on by Ross Gordon to Ruaraidh Macleod but the Glen defence managed to scramble the ball out for a corner. This was an entertaining encounter with some good goals scored and Skye will look to continue that prowess in front of goal into the remainder of the London Shield campaign.
